A Loving Caring Place for Animals 6/19/2009

Since the only ""reviews"" here are the toxic rants of the same person, I thought I'd throw in my two cents. The Benicia Vallejo Humane Society does great work. With the economy the way it is today, they are being stretched beyond the limit, and yet they still do a superb job. They routinely take in animals from other shelters who are on ""death row"", If they don't have room, they will try and find a foster situation for the animal until a space opens up. With the number of ""surrenders"" due to the worsening economy, along with the high number of strays and abandoned animals they deal with already, it's amazing they can do as much as they do. If you're looking to adopt, start here. If you're forced to surrender a pet, they will do all they can to help. But people have to realize that NO SHELTER OR RESCUE GROUP is going to accept an animal that is deemed ""unadoptable."" That includes facilities with such ""stellar"" reputations as ARF and the SFSPCA. In fact, those organizations are LESS likely to take in a less-than-perfect animal than BV Humane. Along with adoption, they also have programs to help pay for spay and neutering and emergency medical expenses. Of course, programs like this cost money, which they are always in short supply of. If you can donate - money, pet supplies, or time - contact them at www-dot-bvhumane-dot-org. Pros: They care about animals Cons: They don't get nearly enough money to do their work more

Unhelpful and dishonest 9/8/2008

I tried to save the life of some local feral cats. After I'd captured them every place I contacted told me I'd have to spend in excess of $100 per cat for spaying/neutering, shots, etc or else they would euthanize them. They weren't mine but I did not want to see them destroyed I just needed to stop them from breeding. Then I found the Humane Society in Vallejo. They put out publications promoting catch, spay and release and their website proudly states we do not euthanize animals. I was glad I had finally found a solution. I called and asked a few questions and the answers just did not sound right. I kept on asking and was finally told that they took the cats and carried them next door to the pound who then euthanized them. I contacted the chapter president and told him that the subtle difference between explicit and implicit euthanasia was playing with words and that the end results were the same. i asked him to specifically state in their publications and on their website what they did. He refused. Since they wont tell you the truth I will. Don't waste time with these folks. Go to the Marin Humane Society or Solano Feral Cat. I've dealt with the first and been recommended to the second. The truth should not be hard to know at least when it comes to a non-profit. Pros: They're closed two days a week Cons: They are dishonest more
