Show a little consideration 12/28/2009

To those who feel offended by HHS please be careful with your choice of words. The employees there are hard working individuals and volunteers with little to no pay. Yes, service at times may be slow or may not meet your highest expectations but what do you expect. The truth of the matter is these pets are all looking for their forever homes and places such as HHS are their second best. Organizations such as these receive limited funds and staff despite its ever growing population. If you are one of those complaining do something about it! You can help tremendously by volunteering. If it wasnt for HHS or SPCA or other rescue shelters we would have a hella lot more of strays in the streets. They are definitely not like puppy mills or Michael Vick. more

HHS. Very Depressing 12/8/2009

They say they're a no kill organization. But yeat when you get there they tell you your animals will be put through a series of tests and if it fails they kill them. Along with policies that dont allow any further information about your pets after you submit them. The service is bad. They have young employees who are unattentive to their workplace and have no type of common courtesy. I could only imagine how they treat the animals. I felt very unhappy about releasing my kittens to begin with, but seeing how depressing the environment was and the process it took made me question wether or not it was the right thing to do. more

Houston Humane Society has been wonderful to us 11/5/2009

My pup was tested heartworm positive and most vets estimated $1200.00 for treatment! Dr. Tim Harkness not only treated my dog for heartworms for under $200 dollars he also properly explained every step as well as went ahead and waived the doctors fee and heartworm testing fee after finding out that we were charged $500 for a regular exam by a vet in Sugar Land. The staff member (Mike) who assisted us was wonderful and knowledgeable about the treatments that my dog will be going through. All in all I am very happy with the Humane Society Wellness clinic and big thank you to Dr. Harkness and his staff for making my dog all better again! more

puppy with parvo 4/9/2009

We recently adopted a puppy from HHS. After being home less than 24 hours we noticed that something was wrong with her. We rushed her to the vet (not at HHS) and we were told she had Parvo. Even with treatment she did not make it. We called HHS to let them know the situation, but I am not sure if they will get the word out. The vet also mentioned they had noticed an influx of dogs from HHS with problems. Be careful and vaccinate your puppies! more

You get what you pay for 8/2/2008

After reading several reviews from other people, I believe people need to be aware of a few things.\r \r America has not tried to stop any person in this country from owning, buying, breeding, selling, or disposing of animals with major laws. Right now, animal cruelty laws are it.. and those cases get lost in the paper trail. \r \r The Humane Society is a poor organization for a poor community. (And by community I don't mean Houston. I mean a group of people with a common factor - owning and attempting to afford the costs of a dog. ) They TRY (if not perfectly) to allow affordable, responsible ownership of an animal through adoption and clinic services. \r \r In this situation, you get what you pay for. The Society is poorly funded and therefore poorly managed. I know of VERY FEW people who will get paid $15 dollars per hour at most to run an entire organization that is constantly overflowing, always in need, never has enough, etc. However, this Society meets the minimum standard for keeping more

Wondering why... 6/29/2008

We have 3 dogs, a pit bull terrier and her 2 daughters whose father was an American Pit Bull. They're the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. One of the sisters is mine, and since I left for college, my parents gave me an ultimatum to find a place that I could have my dog or give her up for adoption. I thought that the most humane thing to do would be to give her up to the Humane Society since I won't live anywhere with the big backyard that she deserves for years. Well, like cristina, the receptionist informed me that she would be immediately euthanized. I absolutely do not understand this. They told me that the pit bull breed-- even mixes are not suitable to adopt out to families. Then why does the Austin Humane Society adopt them out? Does their no-kill chapter have more compassion than ours? Why do their eyes see that not all pit bulls are killers, but Houston's don't? Thankfully I was able to convince my parents to keep her for me, otherwise her fate would have been bleak at any Ho more

Please Adopt!!!!!! 6/5/2008

At first glance HHS seems like a great place to adopt pets and use them for your pets check ups and other concerns. I must admit I have yet to adopt from them but I have used their clinic services and I hadn't had any problems with them. I recently have taken in two dogs who could not be kept by their original owner. As a friend and animal lover i took them in but only imagined to keep them temporarily. i have 2 dogs and a cat of my own so having 2 extra dogs would just be a full house and i really can't keep them for financial reasons. The first thing that came to mind almost immediately was to take them to HHS. i had absolute trust they'd be adopted and trust in HHS. but that all soon came to an end. i was informed that one would be immediately euthanized and the other one would undergo a series of tests. they don't inform you if they pass or fail. i can only imagine what would happen if he failed. i was in shock and even got teary eyed. One is a female pit bull mix but doesn't even more

Horrible service 5/23/2008

I brought my dog to get neutered there. I heard they would do a good job and it is definitely cheaper than getting it done elsewhere. Boy, you really get what you pay for.\r \r First off, the receptionists were rude and inattentive. I should have walked right out after seeing the person in front of me having a heated argument with one of the receptionist. \r \r Second, the waiting area is disgusting. I saw dog poop and the place smelled horrible. I can only imagine what it's like in the back. When I came back to pick up my dog, I saw one worker just spray the place with Febreze to cover up the smell.\r \r Finally, their procedure was very sloppy. I got my dog back and he had dried blood all over the place. The stitching looked poor and they did not give me any instructions besides "read the instructions on this medication". I tried to call them regarding some questions after I got home, but I could never get in touch with anybody that had any kind of knowledge about dogs whatsoever. \r \r In c more

Thanks for giving my boyfriend and me our best friend! 6/25/2007

About three months ago, my boyfriend and I got our dog, Charlie, from the HHS on Almeda. He was 8 wks old, neutered, and up-to-date on shots. We took him to the vet of our choice for a check-up, compliments of the Humane Society. Everything was great, but if something had been wrong, the Humane Society had promised to fix it. He recently completed his last set of bargain-priced vaccines at the Humane Society. He is happy and healthy. He has a wonderful personality and temperament. We couldn't ask for a better companion!! The whole experience with the Humane Society was excellent. I'm excited to see the new facility that they are in the process of building! more

Low-cost alternative to high-priced vets; great for alley or stray cats 4/5/2006

This wellness clinic is a great low-cost alternative for basic services like neutering, spaying and shots. If you are low-income, you could potentially use this as your primary vet. We've used them several times to get an FIV/Feline leukemia test for a kitten we took off the streets; we also had them neuter two stray cats and have been happy with the results. Only neutering or spaying can be set as an appointment. You may have to wait a short time as everyone else is first come, first serve, waiting in the lobby to have their pet seen, but the prices are very low and the technicians will take good care of your animal. They are efficient and offer many discount packages, to make sure your animals get the shots they need. The clinic is particularly busy on Saturdays and Sundays, but also open for periods during the week. Please note that the number above can be dialed, and then hit extension 404 to make appointments. PROS: Low cost; efficient service, able to bind together several servi more

Houston Humane Society deserves better.. 2/15/2006

Like credit agencies, it seems one bad (and sometimes faulty) report gives an undeserved bad mark. So it is I feel for that Jim S. 12/29/2005 comments about HHS with the "unethical practices of offering heartworm positive dogs for adoption." I just adopted a HW positive terrier from HHS and they not only told me that he was positive but they would treat him largely at their cost (my vet said the medicine alone would cost $60). Everybody was nice and called my vet for secure references before letting me have the dog. Wonder if they did the same thing for this guy given his narrow-minded attitude about being "shaft-ed" in adopting a (poor) HW positive dog (I hope you bring it back, fella!). PROS: Good and responsible people! CONS: Need more adoptions for the big dogs. more

Unfair If not Unethical Practices. 12/29/2005

We just adopted a Dog, and we only found out after adopting the animal that it has Heartworms. It was tested after my wife adopted. This should have been done prior to allowing the dog up for adoption a simple blood test if I am correct. I have spoken to several professionals within the industry and they all agreed it was unethical. The Humane Society--- I am not sure if thats what this should be called- perhaps unethical society, or In Humane I am appalled at this behavior .- This is to warn everybody about the practices at the Humane Society at the Almeda facilty. PROS: none CONS: unethical treatment more

Save an animal 11/4/2005

I was impressed by the animal friendly environment here (I know you should probably expect it), but they have mascot pets that run around the lobby, etc. They also offer superb veterinary services, at a great cost. Sure, lines can be long, but you have to time your visit. Besides, waiting isn't so bad, because you get to see a wide variety of animals and their owners. more
