The house is based on the book by Hawthorn. You have to have a tour but it's worth setting the time and paying the fee. more

Wicked Fun! 10/5/2006

Taking a guided tour of the house of the seven gables is a lot of fun, especailly if you are with a good group of folks taking the tour as well.. the guide is in costume, takes you through each room and tells the story made famous by Nathanial Hawthorne. I would deffinately reccomend taking a tour if you're in the Salem area. (and, as a side note, going to Salem right around Halloween time is when you will get the most out of the expierience!) more

Not a good value 7/13/2004

Perhaps a tour of the House of Seven Gables is worth doing if a) you've read the book; b) you have a good tour guide; c) you don't have better things to do with your money. The tour guide we had was not at all interesting, nor did he seem interested in telling the group much about the house, Hawthorne, or the book. The house is not self-explanatory, so unless you've read the book and can use your imagination, or you're positive you have a good tour guide, or you know a lot about period architecture and furnishings, don't waste your money. Pros: Free parking Cons: , Expensive more
