It could be a 5 by 5 room and serve zilch and still overzealous RW fans would vote it number one just because of the name. The upstairs/deck is a hellhole. Pros: TVs, Bars, H...

This place sucked. 3/19/2009

Went there for the lunch special with my kids and they ran out at 2:00pm LOL! Waited for a waitress to finally come over and take our order after being seated for 10 minutes. Mean while staff appears to be mulling about doing nothing. After ordering, I was brought a beer that was not cold. I was going to ask for another, but the waitress never came back until our food was ready. I was thirsty. Pizza was greasy and hotdog was sub-par.\r Never again! Pros: Paid for my parking Cons: everything more

Poor planning + poor service 6/3/2008

Hockeytown Cafe has a lot going for it: good location, loyal hockey fan base. But it seems to rest on its laurels and makes no attempt at providing good service. My friends & I went there for the Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs and were completely disappointed by the lack of planning and preparation for the event by Hockeytown Cafe. They were understaffed and overcrowded, but that wasn't the worst of it. It was so crowded inside that we went to the outdoor patio to watch the game on the big screen. But they don't have a darker cover to permit viewing while it's still light out, so we completely missed the 1st period. Someone had to hold up a large piece of cardboard to allow the projected image to be seen, but of course that was much too small for us in back to see. Once it became clear that you couldn't watch the game, the crowd rushed to the one and only bottlenecked entrance/exit to the building. They promptly started denying entry into the building due to capacity restrictions. So tough luck for those outside, and they didn't even have the volume up loudly enough to hear the game. Other evidence of poor planning included incredibly slow service and a lone bartender serving the entire outdoor patio who told one of our party members that tips were poor so he was taking his own sweet time (self-fulfilling prophecy, buddy), and there was 1 lone portapotty for females vs 4-5 for males. Anyone with a brain knows women need to use the restroom more and take longer, so the lines for the women were long, while men could come & go as they please (unless they chose to urinate in the bushes, and there were plenty of them, too - nice). To top it all off, in the third OT, it started to rain - yet the Cafe shut the doors on people trying to get inside - even those who were just trying to exit - forcing them to climb over a fence just to get the h*ll out of that place! It's not like they have never hosted a playoff before - they should know better. Get new management! Pros: good location, small but decent beer selection Cons: awful management, dirty, poor service more

Terrible Service! 4/19/2008

I have never had a worse experience at a resturant before! Seems all the servers have to do is take our order and thats it. She took our drink and food order together because she left us for so long. Someone else served our food and it had to be autioned off. Runners are fine but make sure you know who to serve what and to where! Our food came out before our drinks, she forgot our waters, we were served a meal without silverware, napkins or a side plate. Who serves without utensils and its not like she forgot she really had no intentions of putting them on the table. When we asked for napkins she kind of looked at us as if it was an inconvience for her to do the basic things of her job. She did not have to clear her own table she checked on us once and that was for me to give her my card for the bill. The sad thing was, she had two other tables a three-top and a four-top plus our two, thats it! There was no need for that poor of service, it was terrible! Pros: lots of variety when it comes to drinks Cons: terrible, terrible service more

Stay AWAY!!! 9/24/2007

This place is a joke! It was recommended to us as we were in from out of town and just wanted to watch a some football on a Sunday afternoon. First, unless you liked the Lions (or Tigers as they were playing across the street too), forget about watching the game you want to see. I understand it's IN Detroit, but this place has many many TVs... surely they can put more than the Lions and Tigers games on right? I asked for the San Diego/Green Bay game and they told me they couldn't find it. Doesn't a sports bar who has Directv also have Sunday Ticket.. and carry all the games?? Second, the food was TERRIBLE! Prices were ok, but we had appetizers (and soups) coming out after entrees. The French Onion soup should be called French Salt soup. The fries were cold. The turkey on the Club was second grade at best. Not good food, period. And third, the service was far from spectacular... or even good for that matter. It wasn't busy at all but service was very slow and they messed up a couple orders in our group of 10. The bar had some positives like HDTV and lots of Red Wings memorabilia but unless you like the Red Wings, I'd stay far away. Or check it out by just having a beer... but definitely do not eat there! Go to one of the many other places nearby, we wish we would have! Pros: Lots of HDTVs and Red Wings memorabilia Cons: Horrible Food, Bad Service and NO flexibility of watching different games when the Lions/Tigers are on. more

Great Beer Selection 12/7/2006

If you have not been recently, you need to go! 63"" Plasma TV's too numerous to count, huge selection of draft and bottled beer, cool motorcycle display, great food and service. Best place before during or after and event downtown! Pros: Beer selection, tv's Cons: crowded before an event more

Wings 11/10/2006

Go watch the wings dominate people here and have the time of your life. It is so awesome you will love it more

Only for the Bennegans / TGI crowd 12/6/2005

If you like very average, mass-appeal food and beer, you'll love this place. It's one of the most popular spots in Detroit. It's a bar, a restaurant, and a club, and even has a theater. Everybody in town knows about it, and inevitably comers here. Knowledge of this place denotes no sophistication. I've been there 20 times or so, due to friends under various circumstances. If you are a beer or food snob, this place is only for the socialization, of which you will find plenty. Pros: Popular Cons: Food, Beer, Parkin more

Great Atmosphere! 10/8/2003

Of course this is a great place to be during a Red Wing game, but it's great everyday! Lots of Red Wing memorabilia, almost like a little Red Wing museum. Menu wasn't what I was expecting, I was thinking burgers and stuff. More upscale! Fun place to visit! Go early on game night! Pros: Great Atmosphere, Fun, Friendly! Cons: Crowded, Bad Parking, Conveniently Located more

Overrated 5/15/2003

The only reason I can think anyone goes here is the name. Expensive, bland, corwded, and the beer selection is horrible. Pros: Clean, Nice building Cons: Expensive, Bland, Beer more

Yucky Town Cafe 3/7/2003

If you like processed chicken, cooked salads, and uncooked Buffalo Wings, this is the place for you. Otherwise, don't waste your time or your money!!! Pros: Nice Waitress Cons: Terrible Food, Terrible Drinks more

Hat Trick!!!! 1/22/2003

I recently visited Hockeytown Cafe while in Michigan for Christmas and have to say its the BEST place for hockey fans, especially Wing Fans, by far! The main bar with the ""ice rink"" was an added touch! I will definitely be back...... all the way from South Carolina. GO WINGS!!!! Pros: location, atmosphere, friendly staff Cons: n/a, n/a, n/a more

Not Your Average Sports Bar 1/16/2003

Not your run-of-the-mill sports bar in any way. The food is in no way the usual bar food, and the drinks are reasonably priced. The atmosphere is second to none, esp. during the playoff run when the deck is open and the weather is warm. The HockeyTown Cafe is located steps away from the Fox, Ford Field, New Tiger Stadium, and shares the same building as Second City. The casinos are minutes away, as is the bridge to Windsor. more

Good for a Theme Restaurant 1/5/2003

We went to Hockeytown Cafe before a Red Wings game. The place was busy and we waited an hour for a table. The whole restaurant was extremely crowded. Once we were seated, service was good and friendly. The food was not exciting, but it wasn't bad either. I had a portobello mushroom ""burger"" which was pleasantly grilled but very basic. This is a good place to go before a game (or during one) if you're a hockey fan, but otherwise there are better choices than this theme restaurant. Pros: good parking, good for hockey fans, decent grub Cons: long wait, unexciting food more

A star in Detroit 11/21/2002

I love hockey, so I will say that I love to watch the Wings here when I come to Detroit. The food is good, sometimes the service can be slow before games. But all in all, if you get to Detroit then give it a try, espically during a Red Wings hockey game. GO WINGS! Pros: HOCKEY Rules Cons: Make reservations more

low rate 10/18/2002

Too bad this could be a nice place to visit and eat but, the service is horrible. I guess its because they are busy so they don't need your business. I give it until novelty wears off. Who runs this place? Is this their first restaurant? Cons: Unfriendly, Down right mean! more

Is it worth it? 10/18/2002

This is a great place if you can catch it on an off day but if there is a big sporting event going on, then forget it. The place gets overcrowded and parking in the area is expensive. Second City is usually a great show and there is a small dance club on the top floor that is fun. Pros: great people watching, interesting dance clu, Second City Cons: expensive parking, if, too expensive, sometimes packed more

GO WINGS!!!!!! 10/18/2002

I love Hockeytown Cafe!!! Being an avid fan of the DETROIT RED WINGS, I had to expierence Hockeytown Cafe, and it was fantastic. The food was great, the service was fast, and fun, and the whole decor thing is AWESOME!!!!!!! I would recommend Hockeytown Cafe to anyone, especially out of towners, to show them what a real hockey city is all about!!!!!!!!! more
