Editorial review from Citysearch 7/2/2012

My boyfriend and I have been going to this Chinese restaurant very frequently and we couldn't agree more that the dim sum is delicious especially the shui mia. However the costomer service is terrible. The male owner/sever never once greeted us with a ""Hi' or a smile. Even when we sincerily tried to say hi he would just unwillingly ignored our presence. When our water glass runs empty we have to inconveniently ask for it. Because of the unfriendly enviroment and bad customer service we decided not to go the restaurant ever again. more

Ho Ho Gourmet Horrible Service 5/5/2012

What a horrible experience at Ho Ho Gourmet last night! I will never go there again! I placed an order to go and while parked in the parking lot waiting for the order to be filled, a crazy asian lady, who I presume works at the restaurant pounded on my window, while yelling and screaming at me. I opened the window and caught that she didn't want me to park in the parking lot. I tried to explain I was waiting for an order to go and she still continued to yell at me, in partially understandable language. I walked in side to find someone reasonable and found a nasty staff that had no concern for the unprofessional behavior from this crazy lady! I am absolutely appalled at this utterly unprofessional behavior and service. I recommend Cafe Tran in Murray for the best food you will have! more

Nasty food; not worth going. 4/14/2012

This is the worst dim sum place. The shrimp dumpling tasted like plastics. The pork bun was soggy. The turnip cake had a smell of trash. Moreover, a male waiter was simply rude and impatient. I will not go back. It does not worth a try. more

WHAT HAPPENED? 11/26/2011

What happened ? The food is still good the ""SERVICE SUCKS"" I went in day after Thanksgiving, The hostess was on one that day! I have been eating here almost 20 years but not as often as before I always tip 20% or more the servers and hostess were like in a trance or the twilight zone? I waited over 20 min for my order after finally flagging someone to take my order 1 item! Finally I put my coat back on walked up to hostess and said ""CANCEL MY ORDER"" No apology I doubt I will go back What happened to customer service? more

love dim sum hate service 5/18/2011

serious... they do have good dim sum and food. The lady is nice. But that waiter? If they didn't have good food, I wouldn't go back just for him. Sad. They could update their decor too. more

Best Chinese Food EVER!!! 4/11/2011

I love this place! My husband introduced me to it about a year ago and ever since we have gone there multiple times! The dining room is nothing fancy but believe me the food will make up for it 10 fold! Peking Spare Ribs, Beef with Flat Noodle, Orange Chicken, and General Taos Chicken are some of our all time favorites here! Everything is served with a side of sticky rice. The people there are so nice! Be warned though, once you try it, you will be craving it at least once a week!!! Soo addicting! Just wish I didn't live so far away! more

Swing and a hit! 7/13/2010

The restaurant itself is a bit of a ""hole in the wall"" but the food is great! We have often found that the best food is found in restaurants such as these. We ordered the cream cheese wontons and potstickers for appetizers and were very pleased with both. The wontons were delicious and the potstickers also very tasty and were much bigger than any potstickers I've had at any restaurant. Then we ordered the ham fried rice, mushrooms & beef, and the sweet & sour chicken for dinner. Everything was great! The fried rice was spectacular, the beef was very tasty and the chicken was fabulous. The chicken was actual white chicken breasts, not what we like to call ""mystery meat"", and the breading was perfectly crispy, even after sitting in the sauce. We were very pleased with our experience there and will definitely return! Pros: Great amount of food Cons: Hole in the wall more

GREAT DIM SUM 12/19/2009

Our family of 8 went to Cafe Anh Hong. I'm so glad, we didn't listen to all the negative things posted. There was no pinky waiter, no wait for our dim sum, the service was great, the dim sum delicious, and even our food that we did order was on the table within minutes. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. Dim sum is a breakfast/brunch meal. To get fresh dim sum, you have to be in the restaurant during mid-morning, or early lunch hours. I would highly recommend this place to my family and friends. Pros: delicious dim sum, great service, affordable, more

Best Authentic Chinese Restaurant in Salt Lake 2/8/2009

One of the best most authentic chinese restaurants I have had in a long time outside of China. Restaurant has very good authentic dishes for the more adventurist diner, however, if you want good old amercanized standby's, this is the place for you, also. When you first walk in it seems to exude the label ""whole in the wall"", however, once you settle there is a relaxed atmosphere that the servers seem to encourage. I had read a previous review that persons of Asian background had priority over all others, however, did not experience that here at all. Wanted that to be VERY clear about this place. Unfair. I recommend the Salt Crusted Shrimp and the Shanghai chicken. Dim Sum dishes are authentic and some of the best I have had slumin in New York China Town. Found this place from recommendation of Chinese friends at work. Nuff said. Pros: Great authentic food, good service with friendly people. Cons: Little bit of a fixer upper builiding, parking not great. Probably not condusive to groups over 7 to 8. more

The crab and other fish is great 1/10/2009

This is as good as it gets in Salt Lake. And some dishes are fantastic by any standard. The steamed or fried whole fish is great, along with the steamed bass with bean sauce. The staff is efficient and even friendly. Although they are rushed when the place is packed at certain times. Their special menu items are very good and all food is fresh and prepared to order. Go for the food not the decor. Pros: Great food and friendly staff Cons: Ambience not the strongest more

excellent food! 6/21/2008

the ambiance & location aren't the greatest but the food is wonderful. while the hosting skills are alien to western sensibilities, they make perfect sense to the chinese. i originally visited this restaurant on the recommentaion of my tai chi/kung fu master [a tawainese chef] and have never been dissapointed. i've been able to get laughter out of the male waiter and he is most gracious in his own fashion [even though he looks miserable most of the time - i think he is just really shy and strange in his own way]. the woman server is most accommodating and jovial. don't expect great english to be spoken. look beyond the ambiance, relax, and enjoy the food and tea. i highly recommend the chow yang rice and sinagpore chow mie fun. order off the menu or off the chinese menu [with english translations]. the dim sum is most excellent. note for all chinese restaurants: if you want your tea refilled, just open the top. Pros: authentic food & flavour Cons: location more

Come to this restaurant for the food, not the service 1/25/2008

Don't expect to receive the service you would get from most restaurants. The owners know how to cook Chinese food, but don't have very good customer relations skills. Nevertheless, it's worth coming for the food. Beware of the ""Americanized"" portion of the menu. These include your combo meals and lunch specials. They aren't very good. Rather, look at the Dim Sum menu or the Chinese menu. The Chinese menu has the English names written off to the sides. These are generally your best choices. Recommended Dim Sum: Fried dumplings with shrimp and leeks, har gow, sui mai. more

Great Cantonese Food in Salt Lake City 3/21/2007

I have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant that served Cantonese style dishes in SLC and I think I finally found it, I tried their Beef in Oyster Sauce, Chicken Chow Mein, Char Shui (Buns with BBQ pork)(sorry about my chinese), Wong Tong\r \r Until now in my quest for a good Cantonese restaurant this is the place to go, may not look good from the outside, but the food and the service were amazing. It's been only 4 days and I am already craving for chinese food.\r \r I rate Ho-Ho gourmet even higher than Mandarin at Bountiful, which is supposed to be the best Chinese at SLC. Pros: Parking, Food, Service Cons: Ambience more

Dim Sum 2/24/2007

Tasty dim sum but lousy service. The usual waiter must be one of the owner/partners because, with his poor attitude and service, he would have been fired long ago. Ambiance is very plain and not representative of a typical oriental restaurant decor. If the waiter is an example of the sanitary conditions in the kitchen, I would hesitate recommending patronage . If you would like a good example of dim sum. with friendly service, in an attractive establishment, try the Hong Kong west of the Gateway. Pros: Tasty dim sum Cons: Lousy service attitude more

Dim Sum 2/24/2007

One of the few authentic dim sum servers in the Salt Lake valley. Good variety on Saturdays. Sit by the kitchen in order to be first in line as the carts come out or they are picked over by the time they go by the first few tables and they turn around and go back to the kitchen without reaching the end of the line tables. As a result you wait for a long time for each offering. If you don't see what you want on the carts, just ask the server and they can bring an individual serving out to you. Atmosphere is not the most pleasing with respect to sanitation or decor. More like a cheap restaurant. For good service and a more attractive dim sum experience, patronize the Hong Kong on 4th South west of the Gateway. Pros: dim sum available with good variety. Cons: dismal atmosphere more

Good food, busy restaurant 12/20/2006

I was a little intimidated when I first tried Ho-Ho Gourmet. I don't have much experience with dim sum and the restaurant was extremely crowded and very busy. I tried a few different dishes like shrimp dumplings and steamed buns with pork filling. All the dishes I tried were either really good or fantastic. I wasn't sure what each one was and the staff wasn't extremely friendly but they were helpful. I will definitely try the restaurant again based on the food experience alone. Pros: Great food, unique dining experience Cons: Busy wait staff, not extremely friendly more

great dim sum Sunday 9/30/2006

Very good Dim Sum. Most of the patrons this sunday were chinese-speaking, which I found very reassuring. more

It doesn't suck 4/30/2005

I went there based on reviews from Citysearch, and I have to admit, most seem to be true. The owner/waiter/chef has a long pinky finger nail (painted pink) and he's not very friendly. I getting take out, so it didn't bother me anyway. Nevertheless, the food's actually pretty good. I had the garlic chicken-and surprise--it tasted like garlic chicken. I've been to Sampan and I was wondering if they just boiled their chicken or nuked it. This though was pretty good Chinese and if I sound surprised, I am. I haven't been able to find a good Chinese place in a long time. I'm going back. Pros: Tasty, Fast Cons: Atmosphere more

best chinese 8/2/2004

This is no chinese american resturant. It's the real thing. As a chinese person who spends most of the year in San Francisco sampling their chinatown cuisine, i can ssure you that this is the closest you'll get. Though the service isn't great, if you want the real thing, come here. One thing ot look for in a chinese restaurant: CHINESE PEOPLE!!! Pros: inexpensive, great food more
