Best

I've been here a few times now and I enjoy myself every time. It's cheap. The crowd is down-to-earth. Most of the time the crowd is at the perfect level...not empty, but not total...

Worst

Place was okay, but too many homeboys and too much rap hip-hop music playing. If you're looking for cool, alternative, new music like Brownies used to cater to, this is the wrong...

alright 12/29/2008

Went here last Sat. for a party/get together for a friend. The bar was relatively empty all night which was good for our group because we got pretty good service. The gin and tonics were great... The only issue that I had was that the bar tenders were kind of rude to my guy friends. The other people in teh bar were ""meh"" and kind of odd.. Good prices though... Pros: not crowded, buck hunter game, good music Cons: snotty bartenders more

Great Place 6/16/2007

I've been here a few times now and I enjoy myself every time. It's cheap. The crowd is down-to-earth. Most of the time the crowd is at the perfect level...not empty, but not totally jammed. I've heard great things about the jukebox, but I've never felt the need to go check it out myself because I've never experienced an intolerable run of crappy music. Overall a good place to hang out and grab a few drinks with friends. I noticed complaints about the crowd. Yeah...if you're looking for a meat market, go somewhere where the beers cost $9/bottle. This isn't your place. Pros: Atmosphere, Jukebox, Vibe Cons: Bar area can get crowded more

Good times 4/13/2007

You have to know what to expect and if you do you receive just that. Good times. Good prices. Great jukebox. Not too many attract females or people for that matter, but go early with a group of friends, get a booth, get lots of drinks and wait an hour and a half to an hour and forty five minutes for your songs to play. I dare you to try to stump the box (no pink floyd). If you want to be semi-antisocial there's a pool table if you want to be completely antisocial there's a pacman and pinball machine. Enjoy. Pros: Jukebox, Cheap drinks Cons: Long waits for songs more

Avoid 2/26/2007

Clientele is terrible here, staff is rude, you have to wait hours to hear your music on the jukebox, and my friend had her purse stolen last week. Dont go here. more

Best Happy Hour in EVil. 2/12/2007

With respect to dive bars, this place is man among men. Love the bartenders, love the jukebox, love the happy hour specials. Where else can you get a brooklyn IPA for $2.50? Not even at Brooklyn brewery thats where. Never a tude from the bartenders or the owner okay maybe from one of the bouncers (the white dude) but thats par for the bouncing course. to the ""this is our east village"" crowd -- please get over yourselves--the east village is not yours, never was, its every one's. if you don't like it hop on the L to Williamsburg. Sure we don't want backward baseball hat wearing Duke lacrosse team members hanging there but its a free country which is a tenet of east village liberalism, no? and by the way, sometimes, you can look just as dumb with the ubiquitous east village uniform on that everyone wears around these parts. you think you're unique but you're not. At least at HiFi they dont cast aspersions and everyone gets $2.50 BK beer. That and an astounding jukebox with tons of great tunes (except metallica--ok chicks dont dig classic metallica, got it). love the pool table and the hidden bathroom. but please plase fix the joystick on galaga. I haven't made it past Stage 3 on that thing yet. oh and there's hot drunk NYU/EVil chocha constantly in there. and thats a good thing. Pros: Cheap booze, Happy Hour, Jukebox, Pool, Galaga Cons: EVil reverse snobbery more

Great in the begining of the night... 1/12/2007

This place is awesome for Happy Hour. You can order food to the bar and what other place served 2 for 1 miller high life! Pros: Great music / chill scene Cons: end of the night crowd more

MAD BITCHES! 11/10/2006

The jukebox is ok, but there are more women here than you can shake a stick at as my Tenn. oilman father would have said had he stumbled into the cat farm they're running at Hi-Fi more

One of my fave bars 9/3/2006

I've never really been one to go to a place because of the crowd. Regardless, I love Hi-Fi. The people there are cool, the music selection is great, and Dave is one of my favorite bartenders - period. Pros: bartenders, service, music Cons: can get really crowded on weekends more

A blast of a spot 12/15/2003

Unless you are into boring bars where old people sip on beer and watch ball games, this is the place. So, there is rap music playing at times. Either order your own, or you can listen to country someplace else. Pros: Some serious jukebox, Enough space, Cool young crowd Cons: Busy pool table, Too loud to talk more

Stay Away 7/25/2003

If you are concerned about ""homeboys"" (see review below) or the relative homogeniety of your local bar (see review below) or are concerned about how relatively ""hip"" or ""unhip"" your bar is, please stay away from Hi-Fi. Bar has best Juke in East Village (sorry Ace Bar), happy hour is long and efficient (if you've been you know I'm right) and the crowd is surprisingly lacking the posers in recycled clothing and dudes with old softball caps and ringer tees. Please leave me and the people who enjoy a good time, a cheap drink and great music alone. Go to the Lakeside Lounge for your trendy, pseudo-whiteboy, East Village/LES, ""slumming"" dive thrilss. We live here and we don't want you to come by... Pros: Juke, Happy Hour, Crowd more

A plain old great time! 6/27/2003

No worries about meatheads, snobby women or what to wear. The carefree friendly attitude of both the staff and patrons makes this place a great place to hang with friends on a friday night. The jukebox is filled with whatever you can imagine, even the obscure. But as the night progresses, don't be surprised to find yourself yelling a bit to have a conversation - the music gets pretty loud. Expect to see plenty of beautiful people here, dressed up or dressed down. Pros: relaxed crowd, beautiful people, great jukebox Cons: can get crowded, music gets loud more

Great for Happy Hour 5/11/2003

Awesome for after work drinks, the happy hour is one of the cheapest in the city. Been here later on, wasn't such a big fan, and it gets way too crowded. Pros: Good Happy Hour, Good Service, Strong Drinks Cons: Crowded Later more

Great music... but you won't hear yours 4/6/2003

This bar has a great, great jukebox. It contains really good music across decades and genres. Unfortunately, you can put your dollars in and never hear your tracks. Like, I put a buck in early one saturday (only three other people at the bar) and my selection wasn't up five hours later! But I still had a good time listening to others' selections. Pros: Jukebox Cons: Jukebox queue more

illustrates the lameness 3/1/2003

of what has become of the east village. Boring white corporate people, another college/ frat bar. Too bad about the economy and a once ""cool part of the world."" more

Mike is on the money 2/26/2003

Mike the owner, who you may remeber from the HBO series Bob and Mr. Show, handles his business after the dearly departed Brownies has left us. This establishment is now home to around 1400 albums on the juke box. Did I mention the 4 to 8 happy hour? Quite possibly the best snack mix in town. My only slight is the lack of Budweiser. Sorry I have redneck ties. Overall this place scratches the itch for a bar that I can repeatedly run to. Pros: juke box, snack mix, Mike Cons: No Bud more

Best Jukebox 2/7/2003

Once smoking in bars is outlawed, this place with definitely improve. There's too much smoke (what else is new - it's the E. Village) at times and zero ventiliation. The jukebox is amazing, with literally thousands of mp3s. There's also a pool table, Pac-Man and other arcade games. We hit Hi-Fi for an occasional happy hour (2 for 1) and game of pool. No food, but you can have pizza delivered. Pros: Jukebox, Pac-Man, Pool Cons: Smoke more

jukebox to rival many of NYC's finest! 1/11/2003

To the scaredy-cat that was freaked out about the ""homeboys"" and ""rap,"" first of all, join us in the real New York City, my friend! The crowd leans towards the rocker/hipster edge, which is fine by me, and drinks are reasonable. The highlight of this spot, however, is the oft-mentioned jukebox-- it is top-notch! If you're into the dive-bar feel and want to pick your own tunes and hear your fellow patrons' picks, this is a great choice! Pros: great jukebox, nice location more

Matt06 is out of his mind 11/15/2002

""Too much Rap and Homeboys""?? Dont be scared little boy, its new york city... Actually, the crowd at this bar is about 10% ""minority"" - but who cares?? The people are all cool. The jukebox is awesome and has anything you could possibly imagine if you're really a music-head. I've never had a bad time there. Cool bartenders, and a great vibe. more

If you like all rap music 11/8/2002

Place was okay, but too many homeboys and too much rap hip-hop music playing. If you're looking for cool, alternative, new music like Brownies used to cater to, this is the wrong place. Mediocre bartender service. more

cheap drinks - great jukebox 10/12/2002

This is a fantastic bar. I went there last night to meet up with a group of friends and we had a great time. Its a very chill spot - they have these really big booths where you can just lounge at and kick it. The drinks are strong and cheap. pbreezy. Pros: Music, Crowd, Price Cons: No pitchers, No waitress ? more
