What a JOKE! I went to purchase a fire 6/11/2012

What a JOKE! I went to purchase a fire arm at Herb Bauer and their staff go out of their way to make you feel like an idiot! I am not an expert in guns but I would like to think I know a thing or two. I asked for a certain model of gun and was told it is not for sale in CA. Not a problem??? but when I asked why the sales rep laughed at me and said ""short answer....a bunch of commies in the state capitol"". I then asked for a comparable gun and he showed me one that was $500 more ($1000) than the original one I was inquiring about. I told him I was looking for a gun more around the $500 range, and he quickly did everything he could to get rid of me. So what did I do??? ""Short Answer"" left and went to ""The Range"" on Shaw behind Costco and purchased a S&W .38 bodyguard for $425. Don???t waste you time at Herb Bauer the guys at the range are twice as knowledgeable and 10 times more friendly. Will never step foot in Herb Bauer again!!!! Should have listened to what everyone told me about their customer service in the first place. more

Firearm department staff 9/5/2011

Horrible .........was shopping for a deer rifle for my 13 year old son .....was to be his first rifle ..I related this to one of the staff who then showed me a Remington 243....the size I was looking for...it was priced $720.00 . I told him it was more than I wanted to spend .....that I had been shopping around and had been looking in the $350 to $400 range he responded by saying ""OK"" put the gun back on the shelf and walked away with no further help or interest . I waited a minute to see if he was going to offer to show me another gun ......but nothing.......rude will never shop there again.... more

Poorly supervised bike dept. 6/7/2011

Wanted to purchase a bike as a birthday gift, but as I was looking around all I could hear were gay slurs and expletives coming from the young men working in the store. Needless to say I will make my purchase from one of the other bike shops in town. If I could give no stars I would. This is not my first negative visit to this store but it will be my last. more

Gun Dept Staff needs training or replacement 5/8/2011

I agree with the several 1-star comments about the gun department. Some staff (maybe not all) roll their eyes when you ask a question (if you can ever get them to wait on you). I guess that's suppose to let you know how much smarter they are, how dumb your question is, and how irritated they are that you bothered them at all. Management should be aware that this is not just one customer's opinion...and that it's costing the store lots of business. I walked out and bought at Wm Mayfield Guns. more

One star would be too many. IMHO\r Don't know how they've managed to stay in business, let alone grow.\r there's certainly room in Fresno for a kayak shop that is run in a professional manner, with just plain common courtesy.\r \r I would not recommend a purchase. more

I only shop at Bauers when I have to. It's a fully equipped store with nice stuff with the WORST sales staff ever. I'm an older guy and I've been in several times to get various snowboard items for my grandaughter. The staff usually just looks at me like I'm old so I must be in the wrong department. I was in a couple of weeks ago for a helmet and wrist braces. As usual none of the sales staff offered assistance or even acknowledged my presence. When I went to pay the clerk asked me if anyone had helped me and when I told him no he just said "Oh" as in you expected them to? It's ok as I'm used to it now and buy all that I can online. The gun dept is even worse. If they get tired of ignoring you they come over and insult you. I won't even go into that part of the store anymore.\r Barry I don't know if you read these or even care if you do, but there may come a day when you'll miss all the customers that your crappy sales staff ran off. more

Great service, competitive prices 12/13/2010

I can't disagree with the last reviewer more. I have always received excellent service from the Boardroom staff and salespeople, whether from the manager JP or the assorted salespeople. My husband recently purchased a snowboard for me as an early Christmas present and JP was able to direct him to a less expensive model that would better meet my needs then the one I wanted. I have gotten all of my snowboarding gear there, and hopefully soon they will soon carry roller derby gear as I have been getting great deals on my Bones Swiss bearings there for my derby skates (I play for NOtown Roller Derby). I have always liked Herb Bauer's 12/4/2010

Over the years my wife and I have spent $1000's at Herb Bauer's. Everrything from a canoe to ski's & firearms. The staff has always been excellent and professional. They have the best selection of almost everything in Fresno. Gunshops can be intimidating for some women. The guys there have always answered her questions and treated her well. Herb's will always get my $$. more

always SO rude. 11/15/2010

So rude. Everytime I go in the employees give TERRIBLE service. Not only are the NOT helpful, but they go out of their way to make you feel like you are not welcome in the store, or like you "don't belong there." I always go back hoping for better service, because unfortunately they are one of the only stores in Fresno that carries high-end snowboard equipment, But they always continue to show me how crappy their customer service is. The Boardroom won't be getting any of my money anymore. Id rather shop online. more

The Boardroom - Snowbaording 3/18/2010

I have visted The Herb Bauer Boardroom several times in the past two years 08-10 and have recieved great assistance from the employees in the snowboarding department. Every time I have visted The Boardroom the employees have taken their time to answer all my questions even in the knowledge that I was not going to purchase anything. I have learned a lot about the equipment and have purchased a snowboard and binding with nothing, but satisfaction from Herb Bauer. They will continue to receive my business in the future. more

Herb Bauers mis a great sporting goods store. I mostly shop at the Gun and Hunting department, but God forgive if I need help or ask a question. For the last 15 years I have purchsed firearms and ammunition and found the staff very busy and helpfull. They have helped me load cases of 12 gauge ammunition and boxes of clay targets into my car. Pros: Very Busy and Knowledgeable Cons: Lots of Customers small staff more

Lack of basic customer service and communication 9/15/2009

I have repeatedly experienced a significantly negative attitude from their expert in the roof rack department. He never followed through to inform me that my Thule order was back ordered by their supplier and to let me know the new delivery date.\r \r I have just called back, 5 weeks after placing the original order - and despite having confirmed twice over the past few weeks that it was still back ordered - I have just found out that he went ahead and cancelled the order (without my permission).\r \r Not exactly a stellar customer service experience! more

Staff was arrogant and rude 8/23/2009

I've been to Herb Bauer in Fresno three times and each time I visited the store I was talked down to and treated with disrespect. My latest experience was just today 08/23/09, wherein I entered the store intent on purchasing a handgun and when I asked if they carry a particular brand of handgun, the employee treated me as if I were stupid merely for asking. I really don't know that much about guns, so I wasn't completely sold on the particular brand that I initially requested. I feel that with some direction, he could have swayed me to purchase another brand, but the only thing I'm sold on now is never returning to that store again and making sure that everyone I know is aware of how I was treated there. I would give it a zero out of five stars if I could. Pros: Wide variety of products Cons: Rude and demeaning staff more
