The folks at Harpers are great! They are friendly and helpful. I rented a moving truck since I had to move in town and the rate was cheap. I was uncomfortable with their inspection process but I can understand with all the damages people do. I could see some of the dents and scratches on the box. But when I returned, everything was fine since I did not add to the damages. more

1500.00 ! 4/3/2009

Returned a box van and did the mirror and white glove inspection. 3 months later got a bill for $1500. for scratches on the truck, which I know I did not do. This one will go to court. \r Don't rent from them. They pull you in with there low rates!\r Robert more

Not Worth it 3/12/2009

We found their service to be super slow compared to the efficiency you see with the major companies. We returned a car on a Sunday at Kona to find only one overworked employee trying to do all the jobs inside and out for a line of customers. We barely made our flight after the one employee shut down the office to run the shuttle van. Then we were charged over $500 for small fender scratches. Found out from a Hilo B&B website that Harper's is known for this practice. more

In a word: Terrible 2/20/2009

Harper's Car and Truck Rental is an absolute mess. If you are in need of a rental car or 4x4 DO NOT rent from Harper's. \r We just returned from a two week vacation in Hawaii where we rented a car for only 24 hours. The hour we spent getting the car was an hour wasted on our trip. The men in the Kona office were absolute jerks to my husband and I. They had us running around in circles and didn't want to do anything to help things go smoothly. \r What is so unfortunate, is that the people in the main office who answer the phones are helpful and friendly. We had no problem with them at all. \r Our car was due back at 10:30 am and we pulled into the Harper's return dock at 10:33. The man behind the desk said "Running a little late, are we?" 3 minutes? You're going to charge us for 3 minutes? Unreal. It is clear to me that these two men in the Kona office are disgruntled, hate tourists and can't stand to see people enjoying themselves. Awesome! 6/21/2008

Great experience with Harpers! They were very friendly on the phone and when we rented the 4x4. They answered every question we had about Mauna Kea and the summit tour. They gave us a free map and directions, and some info on the Visitor Center on Mauna Kea. We would recommend the summit tour. The tour into the telescopes was AWESOME! The star-gazing afterwards was great. It would have been better if we had our own telescope.Harpers inspected the vehicle very thoroughly which we have never seen before. The agent told us the inspection was for our benefit so we don't get charged for any pre-existing damage. They checked the undercarriage with mirrors. You should see the mirrors on the ceiling! They said it was for box trucks. When we returned the vehicle, there were no problems since we didn't cause any new damage. The vehicle was a Toyota FJ Cruiser and it was the cleanest vehicle we've rented. The car, a Pontiac G6, we got from Alamo was dirty compared to Harpers.We would strongly rec more

Don't go there ! 5/30/2008

Upon returning your 4x4, Harper's will roll out huge mirrors on wheels and gouge you for the lightest of scratches on the "undercarriage" and then procceed to charge you for a new set of tires, even though the tires were chewed up and scary looking when you picked up the truck. Big scam !!!! more

DON'T USE HARPER 9/17/2007

The people who work at Harper's don't seem to be very capable. I have rented from them three times and have always had problems. The often lose reservations or don't provide the type of automobile that you ask for. They are especially inept when you attempt to reserve an item using their web-based rental service.\r \r The first two times I rented from them, they charged my credit card an incorrect amount. The third time I rented from them they charged me for damage to the automobile that was there when I first rented the vehicle. The continuously charged my credit card for months after I rented from them. From talking to others, I get the impression that this is typicle behavior from them.\r \r I would not in any circumstance recommend that you rent from Harpers. more
