This hotel has been a Guesthouse for....not that long. It use to be the Days Inn and before that the Howard Johnson's Plaza. It use to be not that great but it has been totally remodeled and now I very much recommend it. Summer time in Anchorage brings hotel rates that soar well over $300 for basic rooms at chain hotels. Even the Motel-6 is $150 in the summer which is pretty much a cruel joke. I choose the Guesthouse because of its perfect downtown location, right across from the Sheraton (advertising $356 rooms) downtown and because of the pictures on the Guesthouse website. I reserved a top floor balcony room and was very pleasantly surprised by the brand new everything. The room itself was HUGE, at least 3x bigger than a traditional room. It included a big new fridge, microwave and coffeemaker, nice big LCD TV, new clean carpet and very comfortable beds with quality bedding. The balcony was great, nice view right down 5th Ave, the main street through downtown Anchorage. Not only was there a desk but also a dining table and two chairs. The bathroom even had a floor to ceiling tinted privacy window looking out across the city, an interesting touch. All this for a pre-paid rate of $140, thats a GREAT deal for Anchorage in the summer, its not just great, it doesn't get any cheaper. I will definitely consider this hotel in the winter too, free parking instantly saves you at least $10 more per day compared to other downtown hotels.
