A somber locale with a promising future 11/20/2003

The first ticket-required viewing platform, shaky chain-link fence, and vendors hawking their tasteless, tawdry merchandise at the WTC site have given way to a more permanent setting that provides adequate amenities for memorializing and contemplating the horrors that occurred here more than two years ago. Plaques along the fence provide a history of the site and a temporary memorial to those who lost their lives in the tragedy. Be sure to visit the reopened Winter Garden atrium in the World Financial Centerduring my recent visit, an exhibit describing the process used to solicit ideas for rebuilding on the site was located on the first floor; I understand the proposals for the permanent memorials are now (also?) on display there. The WTC was always on my list of things to do whenever I visited New York. It will remain on this list throughout and beyond the rebuilding process. more
