Excellent Dance Instruction 12/6/2011

The Grebels are simply the best ballet instructors you can find in the Birmingham area! Stefan's credentials include dancing under Rudolf Nureyev's instruction, several years as a performer in Paris, including a film credit with renowned cinematographer, Claude Renoir. Debbie has also been a dancer first at UAB Ballet when it was the best in town and danced also in Cannes, France and in New York. So if you or your child wants to experience the true form of Russian and French ballet with instructors who have experienced both forms firsthand, without actually moving to New York or Europe, this is where you will find it! Even dancers with other companies both local and statewide, schedule special instruction classes with Grebel Center for Dance for this unique opportunity! As for ""Unhappy Parent"" review, there are 2 sides to every story, at least! I have known Debbie and Stefan for several years, have myself taken their classes and seen them both with all ages children. Never have I witnessed anything except extreme care and joy of teaching especially toward the little ones! As far as ""grabbing""-(which is open to interpretation)knowing Debbie, she was probably trying to prevent the child from running into something or another child and hurting herself! And the preschool classes I have seen there, do NOT always stand in line--they vary the class between instructing all together and individually. That one-on-one focused instruction may only last a couple of minutes, but it is crucial to pinpointing that child's weaknesses and strengths. This is not a daycare for preschoolers. The Grebels are instilling the body knowledge that a Dancer needs to learn as early in life as possible. Also, it is my opinion that lots of people try to get what they want by writing bad reviews -like refunds when they have already used the service. more

Amazing 12/6/2011

I've studied ballet at Grebel for the past 9 years, and Stevan and Debbie have treated me and the other dancers with nothing but kindness and respect. Debbie is a wonderful teacher, and the children in her classes often grow up to be exceptional ballet dancers. I have seen many of her students develop exceptional enthusiasm for dance in her class. Stevan is absolutely amazing-- a perfectionist passionate about what he does who possesses the extraordinary ability to pass on his abundance of knowledge. He arranged for me to study ballet in Serbia for two amazing summers and helped me get in several advanced ballet programs. The performances that the Grebels put on are outstanding, with high quality dancing, costumes, and music. Any dancer who loves learning and performing should train with Stevan and Debbie; they will revolutionize technique and attitude towards dance. more

Don't waste your money 4/18/2009

1. Debbie is not capable of managing a class of preschool children. \r 2. There is no consistent teacher for the preschool class.\r 3. The children in the preschool class spend 75% of the class “waiting for their turn” because they have to go one at a time. 3 years olds. Going one at a time. For 50 minutes. \r 4. I paid $500 for my daughter to stand in line. \r 5. Biggest Problem: Debbie grabbed my daughter’s arm as she went skipping by her. I about flew out of my chair. She could have easily injured my daughter’s arm. When I pulled her aside to tell her that was dangerous and to not grab my daughter like that again, she got this ‘stunned’ look on her face. A few minutes later, she asked me sarcastically if she could pick my daughter up. The next week, parents were not allowed in the room to watch anymore (after they had been allowed to watch for 6 months).\r 6. That same day, I decided to withdraw my daughter. I simply stated that we would need to withdraw and she asked why. I didn’t want to cause a scene after the arm grabbing and simply told her that I did not think that my daughter was ready for instruction. She asked again, “Is something wrong?” So I decided to explain the issues: 1) too much time waiting, 2) no classroom management skills and 3) the arm pulling. She responded sarcastically by saying, “How would you know how well we manage the class? You are never here.” I had not been to the class every time they met, but I had been going every other class. My husband had been going every week and had been talking to me about what he observed (which was the same poor management). However, assuming that my husband was wrong (it’s happened before) and that Debbie had managed the class well the 50% of the time I wasn’t there, then that still means 50% of the classes were not managed well. That’s still not good! Furthermore, if the class had been managed well, it would be evident on any visit because the children would be well behaved. \r 7. I prepaid and when I wanted to withdraw (providing the required notice) she told me that she had already spent the money I prepaid and she would not be able to issue my a refund.\r Cons: Poor class mgmt/uneducated @ safety/shady financial practice more
