The Great Jones Cafe opened in June of 1983 when Great Jones Street was such a desolate, forgotten block that writer Don DeLillo chose the street as a "hide-out" for the rock star...

Sigh... I'm going to try to do this and not be too harsh.... I went on a early saturday evening... The place wasn't packed, we didn't even have to wait for a table. We sat down, there are no menus, everything is scribbled on some board, which my date had to turn around and damn near break her neck to see... The cornbeard everyone is talking about is sooo boring, its not good at all, And the wait was unreal... The place wasn't even full and it too, wayyyy too long of a wait. The waitress was nice enough, though. The food was just ok.. I got the catfish, which was seasoned only on one side, come on?!?! my date had the honey chicken, it was just ok/good... no where near great... To make this short, i see noooo reason to ever return.... go somewhere else... I didn't get insulted there, or anything extreme... the place was just weak, and not worth anyones time... I'm not bitter or something, just trying to save you the trip, go somewhere else, then check off that this was a helpful review... Pros: No wait for a table... Cons: Long wait for food!! Then, The food isn't even great?!!? Horrible Salad... Cramp area... Pass on this place... seriously more

Authentic Southern Flavors~ 2/16/2007

I travel to New Orleans at least three times a year, and The Great Jones probably offers the closest experience to real Southern flavors when I am not there but crave for spicy & salty tastes (but their prices are definitely New York prices). Despite the size and the wait, it is cool place to bring your friends and dates. Pros: great food, trendy environment Cons: always have to wait more

Great Sweet Potato Fries!!! 1/25/2007

The place is small & there's usually a waiting time to get a table. The mirrors fooled me, I thought there was another room to the place. Besides that, the food was great. The crab cakes were delicious. The corn bread is a MUST! And of course I love the sweet potato fries! Pros: Good Food, Authentic Cajun Cons: Small place, waiting time for a table more

Great cajun food! 11/16/2006

I love this place. I only wish it were bigger! The blackened catfish is great, daily chili specials are tasty, and they also make a good burger. I highly recommend for a fun place to take friends, though go early - it fills up quickly! Pros: Great food Cons: Close quarters, often a wait for a table more

What Happened to the Cajun Popcorn? 11/13/2006

I have been going to this place on every NYC visit for years because of the Cajun Popcorn, little bites of crawfish rolled and fried in a spicy coating of spiced flour. They are so delicious....all of my friends order two portions. The last few times I have been there they have been off the menu replaced by beer boiled shrimp (not good) and beer battered shrimp (good, but no Cajun Popcorn). Pros: Great Cajun food Cons: Cajun Popcorn off menu, crowded on weekends more

They are so delicious....all of my friends order two portions. The last few times I have been there they have been off the menu replaced by beer boiled shrimp (not good) and beer battered shrimp (good, but no Cajun Popcorn). I love the food here. The blackened catfish is succulent, the collard greens are smoky and cooked perfectly. The chocolate pecan pie is heavenly, great jalapeno cornbread. Wonderful sweet potato fries. However, the Cajun Popcorn is the star so please bring it back! Pros: Great Cajun food Cons: Cajun Popcorn off menu, crowded on weekends more

Fun atmosphere, ok food 8/5/2006

Went to Great Jones Cafe for the first time the other night. The atmosphere is fun, with great music and the menu that is painted on the wall. We got a table right away, although the place is very small and a little cramped. All of the carbs we had were awesome - the sweet potato fries, garlic mashed potatoes and the cornbread, but the ribs were mediocre and the flavor of the chili was drowned out but an amazing amount of onions. more

ok 5/1/2006

Friend heard they had great burgers here, but turned out it was not so so good. Burgers were very bland like cold cows and the lettuce sucked. Mc'd's wouldve tasted better and save you nine bucks. I almost had to dump my bf after having our dinner date here. more

A "Great" time at the Great Jones 4/27/2004

The Great Jones Cafe is unimpressive from the outside... so go inside. This tiny place has character to spare and quite simply feels like the cafes of the Big Easy. Though we had to wait 15 minutes to sit, we were able to enjoy a cold Abita Amber at the bar and browse the menu (which is painted on the wall). To eat we had the Booya Gumbo and Jambalaya, both specials of the day. The gumbo was dark, runny and savory with a hint of spice, perfectly complimented by the thin slices of fresh French bread that accompanied it. The jambalaya was sticky and rich, but had disproportionate amount of rice to meat. Both were very flavorful and reasonably priced. The Great Jones is certainly a restaurant to visit if youre in NYC. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Price Cons: , Small more

the spicy ginger ale drink kicks ass 11/24/2003

I just have to say, I love the ""shaggy"" -- rum with spicy south carolina ginger ale. Maybe if you don't like spicy things you won't like it, but I think it's great. Jones has some of the best food I've had at reasonable prices. My only complaint is one of the guys who tells you where to sit can be very rude. Last time I went he wasn't there; I'm hoping that keeps up. Pros: food, spicy ginger ale +rum Cons: that one guy more
