Don't order any wine. 12/9/2010

The food is good, however they are cheapskates when it comes to their wine. I was given a glass ""(5 oz)"" of wine and I'm pretty sure that there wasn't even a jigger (1.5 oz) of wine in my glass. I'm not one to cause a scene but I was not pleased. IF I go back, I will not be ordering any wine from them. I hate to feel like I was cheated. When I spend $10 for a glass of wine I intend to be given what I paid for. more

Great food, great wine, friendly staff 10/9/2010

We made a reservation for a Friday night and showed up a little early. We were seated immediately. The server was very friendly and was helpful with suggestions. The food was amazing. We ordered the Guinea Hen and the Potato Gnocchi. The hen was a good sized portion, but the gnocchi seemed a little small.....until we ate it. It ended up being the perfect size and neither of us left hungry. We would be happy to return again soon. more

Great, relaxing evening 3/8/2010

6 of us celebrated my daughter's birthday . Convenient, well-lit parking right next door in the deck. Chef Tony personally greeted us and explained the menu and specials (hint, Y'all, he's not from around here). My sea bass was very good and perfectly cooked, everyone else enjoyed their entrees. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Deserts were to die for. Prices would have been very reasonable even if my brother-in-law had not picked up the tab. A very enjoyable evening, we will definitely be back. Pros: Excellent food and service more

Great little neighborhood place 2/12/2010

Great little place. Had the risotto balls and baked eggplant dish...both really good. Very good value for price paid. Very efficient and friendly service. Will be back! Pros: good atmosphere, good food, good service more

A lot of money for very little 1/28/2010

I ordered a ""Large"" Ceaser salad and asked for shrimp to be added. I got a very small salad with little dressing (I really think there was none) and THREE shrimp were added to my $6.95 lunch salad for a whopping $4. Pros: Friendly and efficient wait staff Cons: Four dollars for three shrimp more

Definately Best Italian in Town! 1/18/2010

The people who gave this restaurant less than stellar reviews obviously are not foodies. The food was fantastic. Pork Canneloni was a show stopper. The rissoto balls were excellent. The menu is interesting and varied. It is not expensive but the quality is good. It is not the same old Italian food with everything swimming the same red sauce. Very fresh and flavorful. would definately reccomend it. Pros: Modern Italian Cuisine, Interesting Menu more

Best Italian in Town! 1/17/2010

I have been here multiple times now and have nothing but great things to say. I usually get the bolognese but last night I got a veal saltimboca special. It was awesome! Too much food to finish even for me.IService has been good and everyone always seems to be in a good mood. I will go back.. Pros: food, service, location Cons: ate too much more

excellent service, ok food 12/17/2009

While service (as usual) is spectacular, from the hostess, to the waitstaff (who is attentive, but not hovering) we move to soups and salads. I had the porcini and parsnip soup, and it was divine. The texture was silky and smooth, the color was autumn at its peak, while the aroma was deep and rich. Temperature was spot on! It's everything you could hope for in a soup. Salad was fresh, proportionate, and visually appealing. I had the potato gnocchi, and while it was presented very nicely; the first bite proved to be an oversalted mess. The gnocchi itself was flavorful and the texture was firm. Very nice! But the sauce was salt... I wanted to enjoy it. I tried to enjoy it. I simply didn't have the stomach for it. I ate about half and resolved to write a review. Had it been tasted before served, I believe the 'gravy' (truffle shallot sauce) would have been tossed out. When I return (and I surely will) I will asked that my gnocchi be tasted before I order it. I can't give up on Gravy after one less than splendid meal. Pros: Porcini and parsnip soup is STELLAR! Cons: Gnocchi was the dead sea more

Food is okay, expensive 12/7/2009

This is the 2nd time we have eaten here, and I am not sure I will go back. The food is okay, not spectacular or really memorable... The prices are fairly high for what you get. There are better choices out there. Pros: Seared tuna is good Cons: over hyped and expensive for what you get more

Make reservations early! 12/5/2009

We went to Gravy for the first time on a very busy Friday night and loved everything we ordered! We were surprised by the number of people that came in without reservations (we were seated close to the door). The hostess was very sweet and tried to accommodate everyone walking in the door. We felt crowded by the people waiting for a table after we finished our entrees and decided to take our time with dessert, at first just to spite the other diners, but then it came. Amazing. We were both stuffed but ate it in seconds and considered ordering another, but were afraid of the dirty looks from waiting diners. Will be back to try the rest of the menu soon (with reservations) Pros: fantastic food, incredible service Cons: crowded more

Food is Good, Service Was Terrible 11/19/2009

I went there for lunch today (1:25 PM) with two co-workers. We work in downtown Raleigh so we could have become ""regulars"", but unfortunately we won't be. We were seated quickly and were offered our choice of a table or a high top. We chose the latter. It was several minutes for our server to tell us she would be with us momentarily. Five minutes later she showed up and took our drink orders. Our food came promptly by another server/foodrunner. The food was good, however we were never offered additional bread, water, how was our food, anything.....We literally did not speak to our server until it was time for our check. There was a party downstairs, however that should not have reflected on the poor service we received. Sorry, won't be back until I hear several good reviews. I hope they are able to work out the kinks and become a successful downtown restaurant. Pros: Nice Ambience Cons: Poor Service!!!! more

Ok, not fabulous 11/14/2009

We started with the roasted tomato and artichoke salad. It was very good, except we all felt that the roasted tomato was served too cold. We order three entrees. The eggplant Rollatini, that was excellent, the lasagna, which was OK (a bit soupy) and the Family Gravy, a plate of macaroni, tomato sauce, meatballs and sausage with homemade ricotta. It wasn't good at all. My husband ordered it and then traded with me and ate my lasagna. I am not usually all that picky and just really didn't like it either. They were very gracious and took it off the bill, and gave us a free dessert. Desserts were delicious. We had the flourless chocolate cake and the berry cobbler. The service was very, very good. It could be that we just ordered wrong. If I go in there again, I'll ask the waiter what to order. Pros: Very good service, good desserts Cons: Food wasn't stellar more

awesome!!!!!!!!! 11/13/2009

Without a reservation, we sat at the bar for dinner on a busy Friday night. The bartenders, Ebony and Trey were attentive and personable. Best Italian food this side of well, Italy. Thanks goes to the manager for bringing out a free appetizer because we had to sit at the bar...she really cared about our experience. Nice evening, glad to be involved with downtown. Pros: best food and service Cons: crowded Friday night....pro? or con? more

Great service, food just ok 9/9/2009

I had heard good things about Gravy but must admit to being disappointed with the food. The hostess and waitress were both outstanding. Extremely friendly and helpful. The waitress was so excited about some of the entrees that I really wanted to like them more!. I had the risotto cake appetizer and it was the best part of the meal, but wasn't really a risotto cake but arancini. It was tasty though. For my entree I had fettucine bolognese which is one of my favorite dishes and I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't memorable. The pasta was homemade but was kind've gummy tasting which didn't help. I might go back and try something else though since my friends seemed to enjoy their meals and it is a fun spot. Pros: service, price Cons: food just ok more

Classic Italian-American dishes with a modern spin

Owner Message
  • Ask any Italian-American what 'gravy' is, and they'll tell you it's the pasta sauce their mothers and grandmothers cooked fresh every night. At Gravy, we take the same care, using fresh tomatoes and locally grown herbs to create our signature gravy, the same way it was made in restaurants in Italian neighborhoods decades ago. Chef Tony Fusco, a Johnson and Wales-trained chef who recently returned to Raleigh, uses that traditional gravy in his modern spin on some of the classic Italian-American dishes, from spaghetti Bolognese to baked ziti.
