Great local Brewery 11/21/2006

I'm a big fan of Goose Island, especially the Clybourn location. It features an extensive beer list full of Goose Island brews. I tend to stick to just a few, but for you beer connoisseurs out there, you'll get a kick out of this place. The food that Goose Island serves is fantastic. My favorite appetizer is the nacho plate; the cheese is served inside a bread bowl surrounded by chips with your choice of toppings. The bread bowl can even be eaten if you are so inclined (& it's very tasty). Also on the menu is a delicious chicken pot pie that can easily last for two meals. There is a nice mix of sandwiches and home cooked favorites served with a flair. There are two locations in Chicago - Clybourn and Wrigleyville. Both offer pretty much the same thing but I prefer the ambiance of the Clybourn location. Plus they have a parking lot, which is key in Chicago. more

The beer is better than the food 10/21/2006

My wife and I went last night. The menu is basically bar food. Of what we had, the specialty burger with dusseldorf mustard was quite good. The onion straws that came with it was a portion a little too large and was too spicy with cayenne pepper. I don't mind spicy foods, but there wasn't anything mentioned about it on the menu. The calamari we had beforehand was barely adequate. They were a little too breaded. The dessrt for $7.95 was a HUGE piece of adequate chocolate cake. The cake at Gale St. Inn was much better. However, the highlight of the night was the beer. My wife and I were having a tough time deciding what to get. Then we saw that they have a sampler, where you can get 4 5oz glasses of your choice for only $6. I ordered 4 for my wife, that I thought she would like, then another 4 for me of ones I would like, including their lovely India Pale Ale, Autumn ale and cask-conditioned Autumn ale. The presentation of this was SUPER - including a placemat with 4 spaces for the samples, notated with the choices. It was actually reminiscent of the great "Beers of the British Isles" presentation at the English restaurant at Disney World. So, I'm glad we went, even if the food was fairly unforgettable, and I can recommend it. more

Black and Blue Burger at Goose Island 2/14/2006

Every so often my wife and I would stop by the Goose Island Brewery near North and Sheffield for a pint and a burger. Rarely were we disappointed or blown away. In other words, the food is good but not perfect as is the beer. What it lacks in flair it makes up for in consistency. We always knew what to expect and we got just that. It's a good place to watch a game and hang out with friends over good bar food. more

Great Beer and Gourmet Food 1/27/2006

Being a beer snob and a foodie, I was quite skeptical before my first visit to Goose Island. However, they impressed me with an astounding variety of excellent beer and an equally exciting menu of food. Usually, brew pubs try to entice you with good beer and then try to pass off sub par, overpriced burgers hoping you won't notice. At Goose Island, however, they know their beer, and they picked a menu that will complement whatever beverage you're in the mood for. I highly suggest their ahi tuna club and their wedge salads. If you're a beer aficionado, ask about their MBA program (Master of Beer Appreciation)! more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Goose Island is loud and raucous on weekends, drawing big crowds for drinking or catching sports on TVs scattered throughout the giant rehabbed warehouse. Beer is everywhere--glasses, buckets and tanks of it, from light lagers to heavy stouts. If you're going to eat, avoid the heavy brews at first. Go with something light like the Blonde Ale, robust and smooth. Honkers Ale also is a good choice, slightly fruity and not too thick.

    The Draw
Food made with beer includes the brewer's Stilton burger, a half pound of pepper-crusted prime beef served on grilled marbled rye and smothered with the English cheese, roasted garlic and Goose mustard. The blackened catfish po' boy is also a hit. Beer-battered fries are long, medium-cut potatoes that crunch and don't succumb to drooping. Bigger appetites will love the 12-ounce strip steak, served with fresh vegetables and sauteed mushrooms.
