GoWasabi backup sushi 3/11/2009

I really am loyal to go wasabi. Have lived nearby for over a year now - and was overjoyed to see the brownrice option!! Started out, the brownrice sushi was just fine - but it's been going downhill on a weekly basis. \r Last Friday when I ordered, it was CRUNCHY. I'm not kidding, the rice was CRUNCHY. I realize it's not traditional to order brown rice sushi, but at least cook the stuff.... we also had a gel-like spicy tuna last time we ordered. (Even the white rice version). Not sure what's going on, but please go back to where you were 6 months ago - whatever you're doing (to cut costs or not) DON'T do it anymore. You'll lose me. (and I'm VERY loyal)! Pros: QUICK delivery & great ebi shumai Cons: brown rice option... more

Not one I would go to again. 1/29/2007

You never say to to a customer, this one did. I was there today for lunch and ordered the lunch special sushi platter, I didnt want any tuna so i requested to give me more salmon, they flatly denied my request, most places would charge you more for a substitution which I would have gladly paid for, but I wasent even given that option. My friend was craving sushi and I looked it up online, but since my request was denied I didnt eat anything while my friend did have lunch I chose not to. Not only will I not go back, but I will tell everyone not to go there anymore. Thanks Gowasabi more

From Okay Local Joint to Worse Service Ever 6/8/2006

GoWasabi has been the local sushi place my girlfriend and I go to. The food isn't bad, (but it's not great either). When I first started going there, the service was good. They'd great you at the door, promptly sit you and give you tea and water as requested. However, over the course of the year, we started noticing subtle changes particularly with the service. We would have to flag down the bored looking wait staff to refill our tea. Our cups would constantly be leaky. We'd wait a long time to get the checks. \r \r Now, the two of us are the patient kind, and we understand that when a restaurant gets busy it's just part of the norm. But last night definitely goes down in our book as the worse service ever. Aside from us two, there was only a party of 4 in the restaurant. \r \r You'd figure with two wait staff on hand, and 6 patrons in total, you'd get served rather quickly. Oh how wrong we were! We ordered one appetizer, one hot entree and two rolls. My friend's hot entree came out before my two rolls, and I had wait an additional 20 minutes to receive my two rolls. \r \r When I asked the waiter when my two rolls will be coming he automatically said 'five minutes' without even checking with the sushi counter. 10 minutes later, I had to ask again, and was given the answer 'it's on its way.' When I reasoned with them that my dining partner already received her hot entree and was halfway done eating, and all I ordered was two rolls, the wait staff finally got the idea that maybe they should be trying to get me my order. And let me say that the sushi chef was rather annoyed when the wait staff asked about my order. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you do your job! \r \r The icing on the cake was when we asked for the check. The waiter goes 'sure' and walks to the front. 10 minutes later he walks to the back of the restaurant and starts chatting with the waitress and totally forgot our request. \r \r It's a shame that this place has fallen so far. It seems as though management has changed hands and the new owners could care less about the patrons that dine there. My friend and I left the place feeling very frustrated. Pros: decent sushi and hot entrees Cons: service that's gradually gotten worse more

Good Astoria Option 11/1/2005

The ""Live Music"" is really just a woman cranking out some jazz tunes on a piano during the weekend. I sometimes wonder if she's faking it and the music is pre-recorded. Simply put, the food is just OKAY. Its nothing mind blowing and the prices are on par with the rest of the market. They do serve a variety of Korean and Japanese dishes, even with brown rice. The service is excellent, they're friendly and polite. I'd go here again if I was too lazy to go to the city. Pros: Service, Jazz Music, Atmosphere Cons: Small Portions, Crowded more

Super Sushi Queensstyle 11/1/2004

Great service as always. The servers are more than willing to help, and the hostesses are super accommodating! We were asked how everything was and if we needed anything else throughout the dinner. Sushi was tasty and creative, and the sake and beer is affordably priced. I would highly recommend anyone in Queens looking for a great sushi experience to head over to GoWasabi on Ditmars. P.S. Great live jazz pianist on the weekend nights. Pros: Freindliness, Food, Value Cons: , Rolls could be bigger more

The best Sushi in New York! 10/20/2004

Gowasabi is one of the finest Japanese restaurants in New York. The Sushi is the best I've ever eaten. The atmosphere is excellent and the staff is great. I highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion! Pros: Food, service, music policy more

Great Sushi in Queens 8/3/2004

I've only been to the restaurant on 30th, but the food is great. I love the greeting at the door by the whole staff, and the service is good. I highly recommend the sushi, but stay away from the Korean BBQ. Try going on the nights when they have live jazz. Pros: Sushi, Staff more

Great Sushi 8/1/2004

I actually haven't been to the Ditmars restaurant, but the one in Astoria on 30th Ave. is fantastic. I've eaten there many times, and the sushi, sashimi, and rolls are always top notch--better than lots of fancier, more expensive places in Manhattan. They are also extremely friendly. I especially recommend the ""White River"" roll with the amazing white tuna. The Korean dishes such as Gobdol bi bim bab are also great. Pros: Great, fresh fish, Friendly, Large Selection Cons: , (But well worth it) more

Me likey sushi 7/29/2004

If you don't go out of your way to go to Gowasabi...then you will never know what you are missing!!! The live jazz is great...as is the food. Prices are ok. Service is pretty good. Atmosphere is great. The restaurant attracts a nice crowd. You can't miss this!!! Pros: Great food, Lots on the menu, convenient location more

great find 7/27/2004

Such a refreshing change of ambiance from your typical Astoria restaurant. Food is great, as is the service. Their dancing eels rolls are out of this world!!! The mix of art work and architectural elements add for good eye candy. The parking isn't too bad in the evening, but during lunch the traffic might make you circle the block a couple of times. Pros: moderetly priced, trendy, great crowd more

it's ok 7/25/2004

it's pricy for what you get. the portions are small, almost stingy for what you pay for. it's not authentic japanese food. i was disappointed. the sosphere is nice and service was good though. Pros: atmosphere, service Cons: , too expensive more

New spot 7/24/2004

Excellent Japanese/Korian food with a touch of sesame flavor, which will really promote your appetite. Has nice ambiance and good music. Pros: Affordable, Good location, Great service more
