Gil's Cafe

My husband and I are new to Pittsburgh and wanted a good local restaurant to go to. We have been there 2 times and think the food is cooked just right. The service has been good and the food is always hot and tasty. We have typically been in and out in about an hour. We will go back. more

We have tried this place 3 times. The 1st two times were just average. On our third trip, the waitress acted like we were bothering her. We ordered our drinks which took almost ten minutes to get.(we were there at lunch time & there was only one other table being occupied.) My husband ordered the steak salad. On the menu it stated that the lettuce was ""mixed greens"", the salad came out with only iceberg lettuce on it. I had ordered the lamb & veal salad. I checked the menu to make sure that there weren't any tomatoes, cucumbers, and a few other veggies on the salad, as I am allergic to them. When my salad came out there were tomatoes and cucumbers on it. When I mentioned this to our waitress, she told me that I should have assumed that these items were on the salad! False advertising. Ordered the Veggie Panini, which was to have ""portabello mushrooms"" on it. Mentioned twice in description. Gave me a skimpy panini with spinach, one ""sliver"" of zucchini and canned mushrooms. YUCK. Waitress (who has been there for 100 years) said they hadn't had portobello mushrooms for over a year. Said they would have had to raise the price. Well, then either raise the price and serve what you advertise or lower the price to an acceptable amount for what you delivered. A $2.99 sandwich! This place makes everyone feel special. Homey, friendly, and delicious food to boot. They will cater to your needs. Servers were very friendly and helpful. Love it!!! Pros: Family oriented and friendly more

We used to go to Gil's on a regular basis but got bored with the menu. Then we heard that they were starting the year with a new menu and a new look we had to go check it out. AMAZING is all you can say. The food was incredible. The staff was friendly and great with making suggestions. We found out that everything is made fresh daily and were totally surprised to see the portion size. You would have to drive to the Waterfront or to Peters to get the quality of meal that we had at a fraction of the price.\r All we can say is - WE'LL BE BACK!! . Gil's is one of our favorite places to go. It is your typical neighborhood bar / restaurant. The staff is extremely friendly. There is great outdoor seating when the weather is nice, which is heated once the weather gets colder. Our favorite is the specials on Monday and Tuesday night - 50 cent pizza slices and 75 cent hot dogs, cheese dogs, kraut dogs, and slaw dogs. The rest of the menu is great - a big variety, and reasonable prices. Pros: great food, excellent service more
