Gillette Castle was built in the early 1900s by an actor named William Gillette. It looks like a castle on the outside but is a well-appointed 24-room mansion filled with beautiful woodwork. The terrace has a spectacular view of the Connecticut River, and the extensive grounds are wonderful for relaxing strolls or some more strenuous hiking if you prefer. My 8-year-old nephew loved the hiking and thought the castle was cool. Open 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day. Admission is $5 for age 6-17 and $12 for 18 and over. For children under 5, it's free. Admission price includes a one-time admission to Gillette Castle, Fort Trumbull, and Dinosaur State Parks.
