tasty enough 5/30/2007

I liked that this was a small, cute little place that was CLEAN. Most places in Austin attempt at the quaint little cafe that ends up feeling more like the dirty little whole in the wall. It might have been overpriced but the food was worth it. Pros: good place for lunch, nice open windows lots of light Cons: price might be too much more

Need more chefs 4/17/2007

I got the oyster poboy, and it didn't live up to my expectations, but it was still good. I really love the oyster poboy at Drago's in New Orleans. I don't think there are enough people in the kitchen because it took over an hour to get my food out. Don't go there if you are pressed for time. Overrall, I would recommend the food here. Pros: Good food, great sweet tea Cons: Took too long to get the food out more

Great food and Service 11/1/2006

Very Friendly and make you feel extremely welcome. Would recommend to anyone. Great Poboys try the oyster or the hot sausage(which is like a hamburger) both are very good. more

Now with more seating! 8/28/2003

I hadn't been to Gene's in a while (shame on me) and was happy to see that they've added a second dining room -- muuuuch larger than the original seating area; I estimate about 12 additional tables. Over lunch, they had a blues guitarist playing nice, quiet music (completely easy to talk over), which added a lot to the already-comfortable ambiance. And the fried oysters are still amazing. Pros: fried oysters, super friendly staff, east austin is cool Cons: don't expect fancy, there may be a wait more

Awesome Cajun 7/30/2003

After our local authentic cajun place closed down, i decided to give Genes a try. I had the tuesday special of the day which included jumbalaya, garlic bread, potato salad, green beans, and fried chicken wings for under 8.00 bucks. The food was really good, and plentiful. The tea is sweetened to perfection, and the owners are so nice. Parking can be cramped in the back, but i went during 11:00 am and only three cars were there. Pros: Food, Price, Real Cajun Cons: Parking more

MMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! 11/23/2002

This is by far the best oyster poboy I have ever tasted. Very crispy, fresh, oysters on delicious lightly toasted french bread. The place is very small, and parking is limited, but I'd be willing to wait! The smoked sausage poboy was fragrant and delicious, and more than I could finish! These poboys are huge, and if I had known, I would have split one so I could try the red beans and rice. I really recommend Gene's if you want authentic New Orleans style poboys! Pros: a bargain!, amazing poboys, banana pudding! Cons: tiny place, limited parking, apathetic waitstaff more

Reminds me of home 8/12/2002

I love this place. In fact, I'm not sure I want everyone to know about it because then I wouldn't be able to get in there anymore. They have the best shrimp po-boys. I feel like I'm back in Fat City, New Orleans. Pros: great food Cons: limited parking more

The Real Thing 7/9/2002

This is the place for authentic New Orleans style poboys. I've tried the hot roast beef, shrimp and catfish and no one in Austin does it better than Gene. His bread is perfect and so is everything else. It's close to downtown and there's always plenty of parking in the rear. The smothered chicken is pretty good, too. more
