Best

Best Buffet in Santa Monica. Yes I've tried the other ones. They don't have the Flavor that Gate of India has. Do you want a Treat. Order the Mango Lasse for a Drink. Out of this ...

Too Sweet! Both dished we ordered Saag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Massala were too sweet and not spicy at all. The Saag Paneer did not have the complex flavor I am used to. The serv...

rude service 4/19/2006

we went around 5pm and only one person was there. the waitress was very annoying. first of all, my sister asked for a cold turkish coffee, she snapped at us telling us that turkish coffe supposed to hot and warm.second of all, we ordered our foods, and she asked how spicy we want it,because we are used to spicy foods. and she insisted for us to take medium and giving us the look when we said we still want it spicy. it's our decision come on! there are couple other people after us and their foods came before us, it took about 45 min to prepare the food. oh and NO refill for sodas the waitress' service really turn you off. im hesitated to go back there just because i don't want to run into her again. so UNPLEASANT!!!! i just signed up to citysearch just for this review Pros: nothing Cons: annoying waitress, long food preparation, no refill for sodas more

Way too expensive for what it was 10/24/2005

Unlike the other reviews, we had decent service (keep in mind this was during lunchtime and there were less than 10 other people besides us there). But my chicken tikka masala, which I consider one of several yardsticks of Indian cuisine, was rather one-dimensional and was almost like a tomato pasta sauce. There were no nuances whatsoever. By the way, for four people, for lunch, no drinks, was $88. The rice was $6 and we would've preffered much more than what we received. If the price was half of what we paid, I might go back for lunch but that's it. Pros: fair portions Cons: too expensive, substandard quality more

Waste of Time!!! 9/30/2004

It's a waste of time and money! My Shrimp Curry was $16 and the quantity was barely an once full, on top of that, it was cold...I mean cold as in left on the table for a long time. The service was bad (the waiters were okay) but the woman host was so bad and nosy it became stupid!!! We walked out of there spending $60+$10 parking=$70, what a freakin' joke!!! I should of went across to Sushi Roku instead. Pros: none whatsoever Cons: , expensive, service more

VIOLENT SERVICE! 9/14/2004

Mediocre food and high prices: $13 for a small bowl of chicken tikka masala; $2 for a fountain dispensed soda with no refills. The service is HORRENDOUS. We were tag-teamed by two slow, rude waitresses. One wedged her butt between our chairs for 5+ min while she violently cleared the table, slamming the dishes around and scattering rice in our laps. Pros: can't think of any Cons: , horrible service more

BAD SERVICE 8/31/2003

I have dined at the Gate of India on several different occasions, and every time I have found the service to be terrible! On a date once I was left waiting to be seated (and not greeted) until I left (5 min). On a business dinner, I was chided by the headwaiter for asking if there was brown rice. Many many times I was unable to get anyone's attention to refill my water glass. In general, I gave this establishment many chances, but if failed them all. Pros: somewhat cheap Cons: terrible service, terrible service, terrible service more

Over priced for quality 8/15/2003

The food is just ""o.k."". I would not go back because there are much better Indian restaurants. The price was run up VERY SERIOUSLY be extras (e.g. nan) that usually do not cost so much. I left a little angry for the experience, because of the medicroity and the excessive cost. Cons: price, parking more

Incompetence 2/22/2003

We went there on a Saturday evening and the service was despicable. Different waiters/waitresses would come at sporadic times. Orders were filled incorrectly. The food was overpriced and cold. When we reported the inconsistent service and poor food, we were generally ignored. A Santa Monica restaurant should be able to handle a busy night. There are plenty of other Indian restaurants out there - DHABA, ELECTRIC LOTUS, etc....go there instead! Cons: expensive more

Flavorful, but... 11/7/2002

I admit to being slightly disappointed, given the ratings. Certainly better than the other place (Dhaba) closer to my apartment, but the vindaloo (which I ordered, as I always do, ""as hot as you can possibly make it"") was not even approaching what a ""standard"" vindaloo should be. Our appetizer never showed up (until we got the bill), and $5 for a small plate of pilau rice is outrageous. On the upside, the food was very flavorful, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. Yet, the search for the perfect (or at least, an excellent) Indian restaurant in Santa Monica continues... Pros: Nice room, Flavorful cuisine Cons: Service shaky, Not hot enough ;) more

Vindaloo for you! 7/10/2002

Gate of India offers authentic and well presented Indian food. It's a great restaurant for a group and I highly recommend that you sample a variety of the dishes. As with all Indian food, the menu caters to vegetarians as well as carnivores. My only disappointment was that the Naan bread portions are small (one piece). Otherwise, a great dining experience! more
