Great German Food, excellent atmosphere! 7/7/2008

We like to try regional foods and one of the kinds we enjoy is German. We have eaten at German restaurants in more than 20 states so our expectations are high, we've seen the worst and best and know what we like. I also have a number of German friends who have taken me to what they consider authentic places. \r \r Gasthaus did not fail to impress, the food and service were great, the menu seemed updated with a few unusual dishes. (I was told there is a new chief) and the decor was refined and had all the old world charm you'd expect. I've gone to that famous German place in Milwaukee and this was far better in both service and food quality. We brought friends from out of town and they are well traveled and eat at places far more expensive than we can afford. They enjoyed it and were also impressed. We'll be back and we'll be sure to recommend it tour friends. Pros: A place you can dress up or go business casual, great food and service Cons: Maybe a bit slow on the main coarse but we were engaged in conversation and did not mind. more

Mother's Day lunch with my 80 year old German mother. What could be better than fine German food in a splendid German restuarnt. 5/12/2008

Mother's Day lunch with my 80 year old German mother. What could be better than fine German food in a splendid German restuarnt. Unfortunately, this was not the place. The Lamb Shanks were over cooked and cold when they arrived 90 minutes after we ordered. The gravy was a greasy coating. The red cabbage was overcooked to the point of being mush. The beef rouladen was a bitter meatloaf. The beer was room temperature and tasted of pond water. There was nothing good to report for the $300 paid for this horible experience. Don't try this place for any event that you want positive memories of. The food is below average, though the portions we fair. The atmosphere does not make up for it... Pros: Good location Cons: Poor quality German food, at best. Not enjoyable or worth the price. more

i have been twice, and food was great both times.had sampler once. next time had beef rouladen. melts in your mouth, unlike tough rouladen i have had at other milwaukee restaurants.dark atmosphere is great. not overdone. price is high ,but so far i have not found german dining that can compete. Pros: food, atmosphere more

For an AUTHENTIC German meal 11/9/2002

Coming from Germany, we are very picky about eating at German restaurants in the United States. We have been very disappointed with the several restaurants that we have given a try in Chicago (where we now live) but it was certainly well worth the 1hr 45min drive to the Gasthaus in Wisconsin. The waitstaff wears clothing typical of Barvaria, and their beer is even served in authentic German steins! Try the Weissgerber Amber. Their weinerschnitzel is fabulous as is the Black Forest Torte. Isabelle & Brent - Chicago, Illinois Pros: great atmosphere, authentic German food more
