We purchased a floor model mattress at an outstanding price. We were extremely excited about the value and the customer service of our salesman, Jose. We made the purchase late on a Sunday and were unable to pick it up until the following Saturday. Jose was great and told us he would have the matress removed from the store floor, wrapped in plastic, and set aside in the warehouse so that other customers would not be on it. Saturday arrived and we picked up the mattress which was wrapped in plastic as promised. We brought it home and immediately after opening it, I smelled an extremely strong cigarette smoke odor. It was a hassle for us to pick up the mattress as it is far away. So, I decided to try to get rid of the odor without trying to return, etc. I used a professional grade steamer and steamed the entire mattress twice. I then let it dry as we ran errands, etc. 6 hours later, our entire upstairs smelled like cigarette smoke (no one has ever smoked in this house). So, I used an entire bottle of antibacterial febreze on the mattress. I saturated the top, sides, and bottom. I then opened the windows, set the mattress in the sun, and turned a fan on. 8 hours later the smell seemed to have subsided. We put clean sheets and mattress pad on and slept on it. The next morning, our hair, clothes, and skin reeked of smoke. I contacted Gaines. The initial woman I spoke to was extremely rude, told me that it was impossible for my mattress to smell like cigarettes. I started to protest when she angrily said, ""just a minute"" and transferred me without warning. The next man I spoke to listened to my story then proceeded to tell me that he wanted to help me but I had to ""take some responsibility for the problem."" I immediately was miffed at that comment and exclaimed my disbelief at how rude he was being. He rose his voice and told me I was being rude for arguing with him. He then went on a 3 minute rant about how he was going to help me because he's so understanding even though it's my problem that the mattress stinks and is in no way Gaines' fault or responsibility. When he was done speaking I exclaimed that it was most definitely their fault as no one in my home smokes. He interrupted me and said he could not possibly help me if I wasn't going to be quiet and let him talk.... What?!!!! He just gave a 3 minute speech but I didn't let him talk? Needless to say, I expressed again how he should be apologizing to ME, the paying customer, but if he was going to be rude I would go straight to the BBB. He then said, ""if that's how you want to handle it, then fine, do it!"" and then hung up on me. So, I just finished my report with the BBB and I will do my best to continue to spread the word to everyone in the KC metro area that Gaines is unsanitary, unfriendly, and you should not waste your money with them. They should have promptly apologized, offered to send out a delivery truck with replacement, and taken the stinky one out.
