Editorial review from GrubHub 3/23/2014

I should have read the review before ordering on grubhub and this is why I am giving this restaurant 3 stars instead of one. Over priced as it was overcooked. I could go on, but do yourself a favor, there are so many better restaurant in the city. more

Like sitting in Mom's kitchen 6/13/2008

I love this place. The food is wonderful comfort food. Simple and good. Fruitlandia is not a place to go when you are in a hurry - go with a few friends, enjoy their conversation and have a leisurely lunch or dinner. Be sure to have the plantains and the chicken soup. Pros: Food Cons: Ambiance more

ummm unless you like hair in your food this is not the place for you 3/8/2008

We drove over 100 miles to eat at this place, even after reading the reviews. We were seated right away and ordered right away but it took over an hour to get our meals. The service was super slow but friendly. There was only one server and one cook. After waiting a half hour I decided to order a pineapple shake, which was ok, I took a big drink and looked down to find a long black hair in my cup. I was so disgusted. I didn't finish it, but soon after she brought us warm bread and butter then 15 minutes after that our appetizers then 15 minutes after that a soup and our meals. I ordered Chuletas and my husband order Mofongo. The Chuletas (pork chops) were seasoned well but a little over fried and the rice was crunchy LOL I tried the Mofingo and it was decent, very seasoned and garlicy YUM...the check came to close to $40, which isn't that bad, but I had higher expectations. It can't compete to the comida in Puerto Rico but it was decent. Sad thing is I don't think we will be returning. Pros: Not that pricey Cons: unsanitary more

Consitently Great 2/6/2007

I love the Mofongo, Calamari the chicken soup all the shrimp plates are amazing. I highly recomend the shakes but if you order one make sure you dont order too much it will fill you up. Pros: Its a must go to restaurant Cons: Nothing to complain about more

Great homestyle cooking 1/29/2007

Great Food I highly recomend the Bistec de Palomilla and the tostones with a Mango shake. You will go home satisfied... Pros: Food, Service, cleanliness Cons: Food might take long to make, parking more

Best Carribean Food in the bay area 1/29/2007

Best carribean food I have ever tasted. Having visited Miami, Florida and Puerto Rico you cant get anything better in the Bay Area. The last time I was there on a Saturday and it was really busy got my food within 30 min which is great considering some high class fast food restaurants like Fridays, Dennys, and Chevys can take up to an hour when they are busy with a bunch of waiters and cooks. The waitress was amazing as she made drinks bussed tables, and delivered food. The food was amazing I have been coming here for years and I know the food is made fresh daily. Great food great ambiance the only negative is the parking. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Parking more

A little taste of the PR and Miami 5/31/2006

Having lived in Puerto Rico for a few years, a cook myself, and raised in Miami, I can say that although the food is not exactly the same as on the island, it is pretty close. The service is pretty average, but if you simply wave at them as let them know you are ready to order they will be attentive. I highly recommend the the Ropa Vieja dinner. The Mofongo is a bit dry at times, but still the best in SF. Overall, I will be coming back to Fruitilandia for as long as they are open. Pros: Inexpensive, Tasty Cons: Parking more

Amazing 1/28/2006

Best carribean retaurant in the bay area. I would reccomend the fried squid and shrimp. The sweet plantain are great and the chicken in green sauce is amazing. Pros: Fresh Food, Very affordable, Great taste Cons: food take 15 min, Small Restaurant more

Great place for soul food 1/22/2006

The food here is half Puerto Rican and half Cuban so it is a delight to be able to have your favorites from each cuisine. Pork dishes are very flavorful and the plantains are amaazing. I also had a ""batido de mamey"" (mamey milkshake) which very few places get right and it was excellent. Small and homey, the service is prompt and efficient and the pricing is reasonable. Pros: price, food, service more

decent food 1/22/2006

the food? pretty good. yummy yucca root. good pork. home-style comfort like food, and reasonably priced with a casual atmosphere. the service? fast, even a little rushed. i'll probably eat there again, and just hope for a different server. Pros: food Cons: service more

if all fails the first time, try...try again! 12/17/2005

in the very heart of the true mission, this is a place to savor. yes, it may take awhile to sometimes get your food, but it is all worth the wait. I have gone here for years, and the service is typically good. the yuca, plantains, and pork dishes are always tasty and flavorful...a down home feel and vibe for a native Puertorriqueño o Cubano! more

so close, yet no encounter... 11/1/2005

It was bad enough I waited 20 minutes to order, and another 45 to receive my food, but what made it most intolerable was the waitress ignoring us the entire time. When we finally got our food, a most uninspired salad, bland flavorless beans and overcooked white rice, overcooked yuca, we had to return one of the entrees because it had pork in it, even though we specified vegetarian. The fruit shake had so much sugar in it that it tasted like liquid cotton candy. And it would have been nice if the menu mentioned they are made with milk. Disappointing food and neglectful service. Yes, it's cheap, but I don't think a crappy meal is a good value just because it's cheap. So sad because there are so few latin american restaurants in the Mission that represent other cultures besides mexican cuisine. Cons: Terribly slow service, uninspired bland food more

Disappointed with a Capital ""D"" 10/11/2004

Maybe they were having an off night, but this place lowers the bar for Bay Area dining and it's quite possibly the worst meal I've ever had. Aside from the cheap wine, which came out immediately, everything else seemed to crawl from the kitchen as if the cook were blind-folded and had one arm tied behind his back. Even the salad took a half an hour. I could have overlooked that if the food had been edible. It wasn't. Not even close. I was embarrassed to have suggested this place to my date. Pros: Cheap Wine Cons: , Service more

RUDE 8/4/2004

I had been to this place a couple times before so I was prepared for the long wait, and the rude service, even though we were the only ones there, but the food is worth it - usually. We placed our orders and 30 min. later the waitress came back with something completely different. They didn't have what we wanted so instead of telling us they just made something else, and then she demanded we eat it and wouldn't let us order something else. Pros: Food Cons: , Wait Times more

Torture 3/4/2004

It was very busy when we arrived, so we didn't mind waiting for 1/2 hour for a table. However, we did mind waiting another 1/2 hour to order, and an additional hour for the food to arrive (we ordered very simple dishes which should take minutes to prepare). The experience was made all the more excruciating when friends of the staff entered while we were waiting for our food and were served immediately. Fried calamari was okay, everything else was mediocre at best. Cons: , takes forever, mediocre food more

yummie 2/22/2004

went for dinner for the first time a few days ago. cozy little restaurant with great food. the plates were simple yet rich in flavor. the mamey fruit shake was delicious! i'm definately gonna go back again to try their other dishes. Pros: great tasting food, fast more

Consistently delicious! 5/19/2003

I have been going to Fruitlandia for years and it has never disappointed me. Everything is good. I usually go with one person - we share an entree and get a couple of side. The chile relleno is like no other, the yucca is pefect, the garlic plaintains are scrumptious and the sweet ones are terrific too. The service can be a little slow, but just wave - it's all good. My bill is usually under $20 and my taste bus are always satisfied. more
