Freddy's Steak House

I know the difference between OK, good, and excellent meat. Freddy's has the later. I don't go to this good old fashioned restaurant and expect it to be a downtown Chicago ambiance but a great neighborhood (Hessville) eatery. I have to respond to the goofs who gave this place one star. I think they have some personal ax to grind. I've been there quite a lot and I don't know who the hell "Rick" is and why I should care. That said I had the "Lake" perch on a Friday and it is an improvement over ocean perch. It is subtle tasting and not fishy like the ocean perch. Most people should know this. I have worked in restaurants before. I know it is a sin to have a well done prime steak, you have to be a kook to want it so. The cooks will cook it well and then get criticized because it's called tough and have it sent back. I also know that it's hard to tell when the bar will fill up because sometimes it's quiet and sometimes it... just fills up you can't really tell. I love the loaf of bread and roasted garlic that comes with the dinner. I've had good luck with the ribs and prime rib too. The place on a Friday or Saturday will have live entertainment sometimes and it can be fun. It's better than a TV in your ear like most places have. It's not fancy. It's just an old fashioned neighborhood steak house that's a cut above the rest in that area. I'm getting hungry right now. more

Good: Nothing. Bad: Called AM for reservations at bar, was told 7PM reservations weren't needed. 6:45 PM, bar was crowded, we were directed to bar. Now, for ages lake perch and frog legs (ayce) were a Friday attraction. Last time frog legs dropped from Friday. Now lake perch was substituted for ocean perch. Must be the economy...trying to get new customers on the cheap, instead of retaining loyal customers willing to pay for what previously was good front service and food off a great menu. No more great, NO MORE US. Improvements: Lake perch frog leg specials. Maintain menu,. Other: Out with old in with the new? Good times, this works, bad times ya dare not diss the regulars.... more

Myt husband and I went to Freddy's tonight and I ordered a well done steak which I thought would be easy for a steak house. The steak came medium rare so back it went to the kitchen. By the time it was brought back to me my husband had completed his meal so I decided to take it to go. The whole purpose of dining out is to share a meal but I was unlucky tonight. I will not be going back to Freddy's. more

The waitress was absolutely terrible. I thought she may have been on drugs. She messed up my order TWICE and got an attitude when I corrected her mistake. To top it off, I even saw her eating a shrimp off of a customer's plate before serving it ! The prices are very expensive for Hammond, Indiana. With the prices they charge, I expected much better service. The food quality (once I got what I ordered) was merely OK. Additionally, the decor needs serious updating. It felt like I was sitting in a dark, dingy (and kind of dirty) depression era restaurant. Save yourself the aggravation and eat somewhere else ! more

Illinois residents need to venture over the border and try this Hammond, IN landmark. Rustic, cozy restaurant with good service and wonderful steak and seafood. Warm bread loaf, honey butter, roasted garlic, relish tray, salad, soup and choice of potato (gotta try the cheesy bacon potato) come with each meal. Come hungry!!!!! The steaks are tender and juicy and the evening I was there they had a prime rib special that appeared to be a big hit. The table of 4 next to us all had the prime rib and they said it was the best they ever had. We drove from Orland Park, IL and it was worth the trip. Freddys steak house has the best steak dinner in town. From the moment you are seated you know you are in for a treat. The vegetable tray is great. The bread basket is good. You have to try the double baked potatoes , they are the best . This place has a full service bar which has a great wine selection. more

Freddy's Steak house is still one of the best in the area. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed. more
