Tucked away in downtown Hyattsville where I'd never had occasion to go until dragged by a friend, Franklin's is a friendly, funky restaurant that everyone seems to love. The service can be a bit iffy, but the food is always good, and the gift store is fantastic (like a miniature Archie McPhee's plus wine!). more

Cool atmosphere, good food, good service 1/17/2006

Franklin's is part of a renaissance taking hold in downtown Hyattsville, and it seems to be the anchor for new shops popping up in this area of Prince George's County, near northeast DC. The food is your typical urban eatery type fare....quesadillas, burgers, etc., and it's done well. The service is pretty good and you never have to wait for a seat. Occasionally, the restaurant features live music, which varies...sometimes jazz, sometimes folk. It's clean and pleasant. Upstairs, you can look close up at the machinery used to make beer. more

Funky local joint with home brews 8/19/2005

After buying Hyattsville Hardware in the early 90s, owner Mike Franklin turned his toy rep business into a gift store boutique with sandwiches and fountain in the back. Ten years later , with the help of local architects, Mike re-opened the space as a *BAR, with hand-hammered copper bar as a foil for brews by Meister Charles Noll; *Local color RESTAURANT serving families and University of Maryland students alike; and finally *Funky GIFT STORE that stocks rubber chickens, card games, over 100 salsas, cool dangly earrings, and even Legos. While the food is uneven, you can find homey comfort food. Wash it down with Twister Turtle Ale or any of the fine, handmade beers. more

Franklin's Restaurant !! 6/23/2005

Franklin's restaurant/brewery and knick knack shop is a great place for lunch, dinner, or a gathering with friends and family. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is colorful and a whole lotta fun. Even the beers have interesting names and descriptions, Twisted Turtle is my fiancee's favorite. The Spicy Asian salad is a favorite of mine and a small order is a great compliment to any of the daily specials. When you're done eating, or perhaps while you're waiting for a table (something I've never had to do) you can peruse their store of valuables, gifts and just all around fun and unique stuff. more
