Best

I'm a vegetarian and my husband is not (far from it) - so finding a restaurant that we both really love for a nice dinner isn't always easy. We've been to Four Square twice just ...

Worst

Chef Ingram is a complete jerk to work for... food is okay but it is over priced. Chef ingram has the biggest ego trip out of any chef i have ever worked with

Best in the triangle 3/15/2007

My wife and I had dinner at Four Square and everything about the experience was top notch. The setting is beautiful (we are looking forward to dining on their screen porch soon!), the food was out of this world, and the service was impeccable. Pros: Beautiful historic home, great food and service more

Horrible valentine's experience 2/19/2007

After reading rave reviews of Four Square, we booked an early V Day dinner. The hostess, who turned out to be the owner, was extremely rude, hanging up on us on the phone when we called to tell her we ran into traffic and were running a few minutes late. Our tables was given away, and we were seated in a drafty, creaky, extremely bright area upstairs near the bussing station with absolutely no ambiance. Even more upsetting was that the couple who came in 10 seconds ahead of us were seated at a lovely table downstairs. The menu was rather odd that night, food mediocre. Though our server was kind, the owner's rudeness tinged our whole experience, and we will certainly never return to this overpriced, snotty restaurant. more

Terrific ambience 12/10/2006

I greatly enjoyed my meal here at Four Square Restaurant. Our waiter was fantastic as was the meal. I was impressed by the ambience and the wine selection. I will be coming here again! more

Relaxing atmosphere, great food 7/12/2006

We'd heard about this restaurant from friends but had never tried it since we don't get much opportunity for fine dining because of our kids and often it's just not worth it to us to go to the trouble of getting a sitter. I'm happy to report that this place made it all worth it. The staff made us feel at home, and we were able to really relax and enjoy the truly delicious food. If you need a quiet grown up night out away from the kids, this is the place to go. Pros: Cuisine, ambience, service more

Surprised 6/3/2006

I wouldn't recommend this place. The service was extremely slow between courses. The mater d was well, snottie. Our room was very warm. Pros: variety Cons: slow service, snottie attitude more

Adventures in Eating - the right kind! 5/14/2006

Shane Ingram, the chef at 4 Square, is wonderful - a food genius. Every meal is a creative exercise, with unusual pairings and fresh ingredients. The service is excellent, and the same staff seem to be there year after year (a good sign). I've eaten their dozens of times, mainly for special family events, and while some of Shane's culinary experiments don't work as well as others, the failures are still interesting. As with Magnolia Grill's Ben Barker, Shane is ""not afraid of flavor"". Reasonable wine list, standard prices. Nice, quiet atmosphere. Pros: Great food, Good wine list, Superb service Cons: Prices match quality more

Great Restaurant For Valentines Dinner 2/15/2006

This was such a wonderful restaurant. We went on Valentine's night and were very glad that we made reservations because they were extremely busy. It is pricey but we were expecting that. The food was phenomenal! My husband is a picky eater and liked everything we ordered!! I will say that we have been to more 'romantic' places to eat, but the food and service and the house more than made up for it. The tables are kind of close together, especially in the upstairs bedrooms, which is where we ate. We will recommend this restaurant to others. It really made for a great Valentines dinner! Pros: Food, Service, The House Cons: tables crowded, not very romantic more

YUM! 2/13/2006

I only had dinner here once but was very impressed. I started with the turtle soup (spicy) and had the seared tuna dinner; it was incredible. Smokey flavor with melt-in-your-mouth tuna topping creamy spinach and a nutty potato pancake. One of the most memorable meals I have ever had... Then for dessert I had the Citrus Trio, a work of art. Arranged almost like sushi, with three desserts, all tangy and elegant. Really unique flavors. Don't go here for the standard meat-n-potato options, but if you want to try something new and enjoy adventurous food, I'd highly recommend this restaurant. Pros: unique food, good wine list more

My Absolute Favorite Restaurant 12/8/2005

I have been dining at Four Square for around three years now. I was introduced to the restaurant by my colleagues when I moved here from New York City. I was skeptical about the restaurants in North Carolina (you know, I'm a New Yorker and all!), but I was amazed at the unbelievable quality of the food (delicious and creative) and service (polished, but not too formal), not to mention the beautiful setting. I am also writing in response to a couple of reviews I've seen posted here about the owners. I have had the pleasure of getting to know both of them over the years, and I'd be hard pressed to find kinder, more hospitable and passionate people. They really do go out of their way to make you feel like you are in their own home. If you haven't been there yet, you're in for a treat! Pros: Great Owners, Great Food, Great Service more
