When in Carmel, try the Flying Fish restaurant! 10/16/2008

We are locals and we love this place! I can't even IMAGINE where the person who gave this one star was eating - certainly NOT at Flying Fish! Owners Kenny and Tina Fukumoto have started several successful restaurants in the Carmel area over the years, and this remains a favorite. Often we just get several appetizers and share, rather than a full meal. Nice wine list, pricing is reasonable for Carmel, service is exceptional and the food is fresh and prepared with skill and love. They make all the sauces there in house too! We usually wait to visit Carmel until ""locals time"" (October through about May) and usually on an early weeknight, we get wonderful service that way and plenty of parking. If you're going during busy times, reservations are a must as this is not a big place! Ambiance is rustic and charming, dress is casual, food is spectacular! Pros: Wonderful food, wonderful service, unique ambiance Cons: Weekends/tourist season - we avoid! more

Best value in Carmel by the sea 7/7/2008

My wife and I had dinner tonight at Carmel by the sea restaurant called The Flying Fish. What an excellent pick, we had (2) entrees, (1) appetizer a bottle of wine and one dessert for $115.00 dollars. Great value for the money the service was great, the food was excellent and we had a very romantic dinning experience. Pros: Food, menu selection, Asian Seafood, wait staff Cons: no outdoor eating more

Oh my God what a true value this place is ................................. Great value & food 7/7/2008

Wher do I even start, my Husband and I did the walk in thing at The Flying Fish Restaurant on a monday night. We ordered the Shrimp curry soup excellent value at $7.50 for a heaping bowl. The house appetizer was fried wontons with a red chili sauce, excellent... I ordered the 9 oz lobster with curry rice and steamede veggies, and my Husband ordered the house speciality of chillian sea bass... we had a bottle of wine and the entire tab was $107.00 dollars. What a great value, the food was excellent, the ambiance was very romantic (fireplace dinner side). The service was excellent, there was zero wait time and the food was really good... what a gem of a find! definitely a place to come in the future!! more

Best Sea Bass 7/4/2008

I make it a point of comparing Sea Bass from all points across America and The Flying Fish was right on target. Very close friends of ours who are locals in Pebble Beach treated my wife and I to an evening of site seeing and fine seafood. I found the chips and salsa refreshing but the Sea Bass was out-of-this-world. My only regret was in returning the next day to purchase a Flying Fish gift card to surprise our friends for a going-away present, the establishment was closed until 5PM (after our flight back to Texas) It will have to wait until next time. Great food and great service. Pros: Great seafood Cons: Hard for wheel chairs more

Best appetizer and entree 2/23/2008

I went there for Christmas of 2007, the appetizer is the chips with salas source. It was the best appetizer ever. I could not resist. I have a the special of the night, lobster. The lobster was great, juicy and i could taste the freshness of the lobster. My boyfriend had the seabass. The seabass was juicy with the crushy slices of almond on top of it. It was delicious. The environment is very cozy, i think it is Japanese style. I think it is very romantic too. Highly recommand and i will definitely go again. The service was wonderful. more

Low grade food- unbelievabley rude waiter 11/22/2007

We walked in loving the ambiance. Never been there before. It all seemed great UNTIL we tried the so called California Roll which was made of low grade imitation crab for a whopping $7.00 thank you! The rice that is was rolled in was over cooked so that it had a creamy texture. Very un-Asian. We also had the Seared Peppered Ahi, in which the fish was cooked perfect, but like the other reviewer mentioned, way too much soupy, liquidy broth. The spicy tuna appetizer was terrible. Dry and not a good flavor. I took 2 bites and returned it. Hey, they are charging $12.00 for DOG FOOD!! more

Excellent Service, Food and Atmosphere 9/18/2007

We recently went up to Carmel for the weekend and wanted to take my inlaws there to eat, who were visiting us from Japan. We very stupidly went to the Flying Fish restaurant without reservations ahead of time. The owner Kenny was very gracious and let us in anyway and gave us a great table to boot. The food was great, the wait staff was excellent. We were there for a good hour and a half and they fussed over us constantly making sure we were happy and had everything we needed. I had a hard time deciding between their signature shrimp curry soup and the tuna sashimi dish, I finally settled on the shrimp curry soup which I had no regrets about whatsoever. I had gotten up to use the bathroom and when I came back, the waiter had brought us a plate of the fresh tuna sashimi complimentary of the owner. It was extremely generous of them and showed a lot of class. You will not be disappointed, if you want to impress someone, take them there. Pros: Ambience, Service, Food! more

YOU WILL FLY! 9/10/2007

Best Food, Best Service! 3/10/2007

We are definitely going back! Not just for the for the food but for the atmosphere and service. We walked in and got a gorgeous little table in the corner and the service was amazing. The chef came out and spent time with us and every one seemed so interested in our stories about our travels. We plan our future trips to Carmel around our reservations to the Flying Fish Grill!!! Pros: Best food at best value of our whole stay in the Monterrey/Carmel area more

My Favorite Restaurant! 2/14/2007

Hands down my favorite restaurant! The rare peppered Ahi is to die for!!! The artichoke is also a favorite but I tend to fill myself up on the wonton chips and salsa. Flying Fish is the perfect spot for any occasion...my family and I have loyally followed owner, Kenny, to every restaurant he has ever owned but this one is by far his best! Enjoy! Pros: Romantic, friendly, delicious menu, fair prices, a must if in Carmel more

Yummy! 2/11/2007

Delicious! Went there for a collective birthday celebration with husband and friends and it was wonderful. Very limited seating so be sure to make a reservation. You wont find anything that is truly Japanese or Asian but it is a wonderful marriage between the cuisines! Highly recommended! more

Best Seafood restaurant in Carmel 12/11/2006

Fantastic Food and Great Service 7/19/2006

The whole experience was great. Appetizers, main course and desert were all great. We each had something different and had to sample each others choices. Service was very good. Try it you'll like it. Pros: It was all great Cons: None that I can think of more

Best Kept Secret! 12/29/2004

Flying Fish Grill is one of Carmel's best kept secret! The service and ambiance is excellent! Everytime I go, I order the Shabu-Shabu which is delicious! It's a big bowl of broth with veggies and tofu that you put thinly sliced pieces of raw beef into and then dip into many sauces. I love it. more

OK for Carmel, I guess 9/7/2003

I went to this restaurant based on several recommendations. While it was good, it certainly did not warrant the raves I'd heard from the locals. The service and staff, however, were wonderful and helpful. I had the spring roll which was good, but did not have the clean and specific flavors of a traditional Vietnamese spring roll. I also had the seared ahi tuna served on a bed of noodles and vegetables in a soy marinade which was tasty, though overly drenched in the liquidy broth. The tuna itself was a good piece of fish, though not served as seared and hot as some I've had. Great sorbets that I believe might have been homemade. more

Wonderful 8/29/2003

Always a treat! Relaxed-intimate dining with amazing food! The atmosphere is cozy and the wine list is wonderful-with reasonable prices. The food creations are tantilizing and one always leaves feeling special. I don't know if it's the magic that goes into the food or the personal attention one always receives from the staff. The BEST in Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula! Pros: Service, Food & Wine, Ambiance Cons: Need reservations! more
