First Baptist Church of Quincy is a Southern Baptist church, but in ways it reminds me of a nondenominational church. Its pastor is Greek, for one, and its music program is hard to beat, using acoustic guitars, violins, the drums, and the more traditional piano and organ (the pianist, by the way, is a prodigy, literally). There are praise and worship songs as well as traditional hymns. Many people clap and raise their hands during the singing. The pastor (Gus Spanos) has sermons that are straight from the Word, so he is right on with what the Bible says. The congregation is friendly and makes people feel at home. We are also getting more diverse, which is always nice. There are young and old, black and white, Southerners and non-Southerners. The children and youth departments got an overhaul a few years ago, and we are slowly filling those departments with children as young families are joining the church. The only problem is that we have had a hard time finding a children's and youth staff member. Once that is taken care of, we should be good to go.
First Baptist also has women's Bible studies and other activities for women, men, and children.
