Popular spot. 9/30/2008

Every time we have been here it has been busy. The staff do their best to get the food out to you quickly. Carnitas is good, and the margaritas are great! Can sit outside or in. Can be noisy but inexpensive and good food. more

Always My Choice! 9/7/2008

The food is always very good - my favorite is the carnitas. Reservations at this old house, converted into a restaurant, are recommended - it's always busy, especially in the evening. Parking can be challenging, but your dining experience will be worth it. If you have a fairly large group, but sure to reserve "the bedroom" - it's the only place for private group seating, or, sit out on the patio during the summer months - you'll feel like you are in Mexico! more

Cheap and authentic 3/21/2008

I just got back from eating there- I had a chicken enchilada with tomatillo sauce and a side of black beans, which totaled about $8 and left me full. The service is very quick and it's great for large parties. It gets a bit loud, so not a good place for an intimate event. more

Absolutely The Tastiest 2/29/2008

I've been going here for a couple of years and it is my favorite Mexican food in the world and I've been many places. But it should be open later than 10pm especially on fridays and saturdays. Pros: Fine cusine. Cons: Bitchy "girl" hosts more

Fidel's Little Mexico Restaurant 12/13/2007

I've been going to this restaurant in Eden Gardens for over 30 years--when it was a mom and pop business. Though it's grown, gotten more expensive and the portions are smaller, it's still my family's "go-to," sit-down Mexican restaurant. The salsa is fine, the enchilada sauce divine. I usually get the chicken enchilada and the house cabbage dinner salad. My husband loves the chicken burrito (muy grande!) and the Chicken Milanesa plate.\r Try going off hours--early lunch or dinner to beat the crowds. There are luncheon and Early Bird specials, and the happy hour with discounted Margaritas in the bar is very popular with locals. more

Mexican Food & Cocktails...a San Diego tradition for 50 years!

Owner Message
  • Fidel's Little Mexico has been a San Diego landmark since the early '60s when owner Fidel Montanez came up with the idea to serve tacos at his busy barber shop. The shop was located in the heart of Eden Gardens, a small neighborhood in Solana Beach that was home to a number of Mexican families. The tacos sold like hotcakes, and before long, the place evolved into a neighborhood cantina. The business thrived and expanded as Fidel converted his two-story residence into three different levels, including a festive courtyard, a couple of bars and outdoor patios, and a taco bar. Today, Fidel's ranks among the top restaurants in San Diego County. Happy hour is offered four days a week in the large upstairs bar. Fidel's menu offers traditional favorites as well as house specialties that will transport you and your party South of the Border.
