Gotta love the ferries 5/12/2006

I love the Washington State Ferries. Ok, I loved them *more* when they had Starbucks on board. *sigh* But I still love them. In the summertime we often take our kids on the ferry just to go across to Bainbridge Island for ice cream. We often stay on the peninsula for longer than that too - but half the fun is the ferry ride. The only bummer in the summer is the sometimes LONG wait to get on - but to avoid that, don't drive on; walk on instead. more

Washington State Ferries 4/23/2006

As many times as I've taken these things, it's still the best way to get across the sound. On a clear day, the views are simply spectacular. And, seeing the seals sunning themselves is entertaining. It's nice having the choice of sitting in the passenger deck, standing on the deck outside, or staying in your car. It never ceases to amaze me how efficient they are with such a massive onslaught of commuters. Prices are just getting higher. :( more

Skip the Argosy Boat and Take a Real Ride 12/21/2005

For a fun trip on a lazy day, or especially to entertain out of town visitors, a ride on a Washington State Ferry is a must. For about $6 you can enjoy the skyline of Seattle from the deck of the ferry on the Seattle-Bainbridge run, pass Alki, stop for lunch or a walk in Winslow on Bainbridge, and return to the big city. Plenty of photo opportunities, no touristy spiels, and best of all this feels like the real thing because the islanders really do use these boats as part of their everyday life. more

Don't take your friends on the ferry if don't want them to move here. 9/21/2005

A ferry ride anywhere in this area is like a mini vacation. You don't even have to take your car. Just hop on, ride to Bainbridge and ride back for less than ten dollars. If you do it at sunset and don't look at the city you can almost forget where you are. Anyway, for those of you who have never taken ferry ride in Puget sound you are really missing out. You can travel from Seattle to the peninsula or drive up and take a ferry to Whidbey Island or any of the San Juan's. A ferry ride has many uses, it can be perfect for transportation, a date, existential contemplation, etc. Just don't forget the to get a cup of hop chocolate out of the machine. For some strange reason it tastes just as perfect as the view. more

A Great Cheap Option to See Seattle 8/31/2005

The ferry system here provides a terrific service for commuters, campers and people headed to the Olympics and the coast. But I think the ferry can be a great under appreciated way for out of towners to appreciate and enjoy Seattle and the Puget Sound area. If you are staying in Seattle, the ferry to Bainbridge Island is a 30 minute each way trip that lets you get awesome views of the Seattle skyline and Elliot Bay. The town of Winslow (on Bainbridge Island) is a pretty, picturesque place to window shop and grab some lunch before heading back. All for a minimal amount. more
