Not as Great as it Could/Should Be 12/27/2008

I started going to this salon a year ago, but am moving on. Yeah, it's a pretty salon and the people are friendly enough, but during the course of my experience, I've been rescheduled at the last minute 3 times! Not cool when you've got big social events you're preparing for. Also, twice I was double-booked, turning an hour-and-a-half job into 4 hours. I insisted I no longer be double booked, which they honored. But this pattern of behavior tells me that this salon doesn't respect my time. That's not likely to change. As for the quality of the work, my color was inconsistent (Sometimes highlights were almost non-existent. Sometimes they were perfect. Sometimes my hair color came out the multi-dimensional chestnut brown that I liked/wanted; sometimes it'd come out almost black monochrome. When I discussed it with my stylist, she acted like I was just being timid about coloring my hair. Not so. When I balk at bright copper stripes in my hair, it does not mean I want nonexistent highlights! It means (as I expressed verbally on more than one occasion) that I want, subtle, natural golden pieces shot through the brown. Hello! It ain't brain surgery. Also, watch the lighting in this salon; it's low. Even though there are a lot of windows, the building has an overhang, so the rooms don't benefit from the natural light. The lighting is low so you don't really see what you've got until you go outside or into a properly lit room. Anyhow, since the work was consistently inconsistent, and I can't count on the salon's professionalism in keeping appointments, I'm moving on. Prices were about on par (maybe slightly cheaper. Perhaps at attempt to make up for the remote locale) with good salons everywhere ($160 for cut, tint roots and weave in color glaze for subtle highlights) I don't mind paying whatever the cost, but I expect a consistently satisfactory job, a professional work ethic and a dependable salon: things I didn't get at Felix Design Studio. Pros: plenty of parking; pretty locale; nice salon Cons: frequent cancellations; double-booking unless you complain; bad lighting in salon; more

Best-kept secret of the South Bay 11/29/2007

Felix Design Studio is a chic yet non-pretentious, no pressure day spa and salon, a one-stop-shop, really. They carry hair products, a fabulous makeup line, artwork, jewelry and other unique gifts. The salon from the outside is just as beautiful inside. As soon as you walk in through the double glass doors, you are greeted with smiles and offered refreshments on real glasses, no cheesy styrofoam cups in this establishment. The decor is contemporary; walls are lined with art, some for sale and some for customers to enjoy. The stylists are very friendly and energetic, my personal fave, Antonio always takes good care of my hair. I?ve been to many salons in the LA area, and I must say, I never walk out of Felix Design Studio disappointed with my do. The location is a bit far for most. I made the trek from the valley but I was not disappointed. The locale is great, next to a nice mall with unique shops and restaurants. It is the best-kept secret of the South Bay. Pros: Music, art, hair, make-up, plenty of parking more

Be ready to be BEAUTIFIED! 10/26/2007

Whenever I walk into Felix Design Studio I always notice two things: the welcoming smile that greets me and the distinct LACK of ""salon chemical"" smells (I hate when I open the door to a salon and get blasted by odors sharp enough to make eyes water and singe nose hairs). As a regular, I already know where to find my stylist (Antonio) so I usually make my own way to his station. He always greets me with the hug of an old friend and asks how I'm doing. I appreciate that he cares about me more than as just a client. I have noticed this same warm quality in others in the salon. \r After I'm seated and either dressed in a robe and/or draped in a smock, he gets down to business. He asks what I would like done today and although he is listening intently on my answer, he is still able to assess the condition of my hair. As we converse about the length and color that I want, he is constantly feeling the texture and measuring pieces and lengths against each other. We usually decide on a refresher trim, a nice all-over color, and some well-placed highlights. Antonio is never pushy or insistent. I have never felt like he ever had to convince me to allow him to do something to my hair. I think it also helps that from the beginning, I have been able to trust him to know me well enough to know my preferences and tastes. I trust him so much, in fact, that on my previous visit, I decided to go from waist-length hair all the way up to the shoulder blades. Not only did he help me donate to Locks of Love, but he gave me a gorgeous new look that totally fits my personality and lifestyle. He knows that I'm a wash-n-go kind of girl. He knows that I hate having to blowdry, put products in it or have to perform all but the minimum maintenance on my hair. The end result: flirty, yet professional + stylish, yet low-maintenance = a happy, gorgeous me! I should also add that Antonio creates my coiffure for my holiday parties, too. Yep... I'll keep coming back! Pros: Super friendly staff, not stinky, easy parking Cons: a bit far for some people since it's tucked all the way up in Rolling Hills more
