Blue Fin's unagi nigiri: Glistening, wrapped in a belt of seaweed, lying seductively on a snowy white bed of sushi rice. Then pop one in your mouth and ahhhh, heaven! Cherubs! Har...

good stuff 10/24/2003

cheapest sushi in town for the quality, though the nigiri is pretty small. Sushi used to be better in summer of 2002. Now the sushi quality is somewhat varied and you can either get lucky or not. The place has gotten popular and there's always a wait on weekend nights, when reservations are not allowed. Most people who eat there are twenty-somethings friends or couples. Pros: cheap, good sushi Cons: long waits, inconsistent quality more

satisfaction on a budget 10/24/2002

Bluefin is the perfect restaurant if you are focusing on quality of food, not atmosphere. The decor is nothing to be impressed with- televisions in the corners, simple wooden furniture, not even a bathroom located within the small restaurant, but the food makes up for all that this restaurant lacks. The food is simple yet delicious. There is not a lot of variety but what there is, it is fresh and tasty. The bill is also gentle on the wallet. I always leave a happy, full customer! Pros: Inexpensive, Good quality food, Good service Cons: Long waits, Decor is plain more

Great Sushi 7/22/2002

Blue Fin has great value sushi combos and matching quality. Free Parking and the shops around make it a great place for a casual meal. Pros: value, "authentic", casual Cons: wait more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside the Porter Exchange mall sits an inconspicuous corridor of Japanese restaurants and Asian supermarkets. Locals vouch that Blue Fin outshines them all, and the line frequently stretching out the door backs up that claim. College kids and under-30 types slurp udon and chopstick vibrant arrays of sushi at the small sushi bar, and at tables inside almost bare walls. Attentive servers see that no need goes unfulfilled.

    The Food
A chewy spicy beef tongue salad arrives in a sweet and garlicky, soy-derived yakiniku sauce over seaweed, iceberg lettuce and cabbage. Soft-shell crab begs for less cooking. Sushi slices are on the skimpy side, and the not-so delicate aroma of the Uni raises questions about its freshness. But rich, titillating monkfish liver medallions in lemony soy-based ponzu sauce absolve all sins. Save a little room for dessert: order one scoop each of red bean and green tea ice creams for a fruity finish.
