Editorial review from Citysearch 8/29/2012

We had a really good experience with Riley's Eyeglass Repair this morning. After being told that my husband's $400 glasses were beyond repair, we took a chance on this guy. When I got there, he asked how we found him, and I told him I'd seen recommendations on the internet. ""Oh, I write those all myself"", he told us, with a completely straight face. But, they are true! In about half an hour, he had replaced two temple pieces, soldered them back on, and presented us with a better-than-new pair of glasses, for $30. What a deal. Highly recommend. more

Optician Perfection 12/1/2011

Went to see Doug at Doug Riley's Eyeglass Repairs today based on reviews and as others have noted, he is a superlative and professional optician with a clear focus on quality and efficiency. I had purchased a pair of $400 Denmark frames that gelled at the temples; other opticians recommended discarding these (after only 2 years, this would have sent me into fits!) but he replaced the temples and refit the frames in less than 10 minutes for $20!! This guy is great!!!! Additionally, the parking adjacent to his shop was free and 9th Street Bakery is just around the corner. As for Doug being a ""talker"", I was planning on listening to him with some time on my hands but no such words of wisdom were forthcoming - he's too efficient! 5 stars ++!! Go to Doug prior to seeing anyone else!! A definite no-brainier. Best $20 I ever spent!! more

Repairs while U wait 8/13/2010

He works while you wait. Or you can drop off and come back. I warning you to park in the parking garge if you want to wait. Street parking is one hour and you will get a ticket if you don't go move your car around. If people are in front of you, Im warning you again that the repair guy is a talker so you have to wait your turn. But the wait is worth it. Basically he tried to heat and weld the nose part back together but it did not hold. He said the metal was tritanium and sometimes it doesn't work. DON'T BUY TRITANIUM GLASSES. Then he went to a closet and got a new frame and basically made me a whole new pair by bending the wire around the old glass. Then he put it on the table again and snipped off the extra and weld on a hinge. This way I got brand new glasses for 40 dollars. I was there 1 and a half hours. Best deal ever. Good job! more

Doug Riley, Eye Glass Repair 7/21/2010

Mr. Riley is a true service professional in every sense of the word. He has saved me tons of money by repairing my glasses on several occasions when other places had tried to convince me that I needed a new pair. \r \r He is a very kind gentleman who has years of experience in his craft. He is truly a master of his profession, and once or twice he has made minor repairs for me that didn't cost me a penny. \r \r I am the type that abuses my reading glasses, and I know that I can always take them back to him in a pinch and rely on him to fix them at an extremely reasonable price. I would definitely recommend taking your glasses to Mr. Riley. I have never had any service that matched his, in ANY area! Pros: High Quality, Professional Service Cons: Downtown parking more

Great place to get eyeglasses fixed 1/11/2010

My glasses had a broken hinge, and all of the eyeglass shops I went to said they couldn't fix it. The problem I found is that most shops can't solder, and thus they can only replace whole (unbroken) parts. To replace my current frames would have cost about $250, and I hoped that I could reduce that cost somewhat. After reading a positive internet review, I went to Doug Riley's Eyeglass Repairs shop (115 Market St in Durham). He soldered on two new hinges (for symmetry), and had everything reassembled in less than an hour. My glasses look great, and best of all, it only cost me $25. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone. Pros: he can solder, and thus can fix almost anything Cons: lost people occasionally come in for directions more

Dependable specialist 7/1/2009

Optometrists have limited repair ability, and will often get you to buy a new pair of glasses or order expensive replacement parts because they can't solder. Check this guy out, he's been there for YEARS (at least 10). Pros: able to repair just about anything Cons: downtown parking more
