Great Food 2/25/2010

I went to this place when I was a teenager with my parents, or my friend, or I'd meet my then boyfriend, now husband for lunch. The food is a reasonable price. Been there a couple times since I was a teen, 40 years ago! We just went a couple weeks ago. They still had the bacon wrapped shrimp. They haven't changed the quality of the food or the quantity. You can go and trust you will have a great meal just as you did 40 years ago. We live near Ann Arbor now, but the drive to our old stomping grounds for chinese was well worth it. Pros: I love their food, any you get there will be good Cons: The place hasn't been updated in 40 years! more

Intimate atmosphere, no negative surprises. Non-chain but reliable American style Chinese restaurant. 5/3/2008

Just got back from Empress Gardens. I have been dining there occasionally since the early 70's, it survived the mall renovation, and I had not been there for about ten years. My girlfriend wanted to go because the chinese place nearest us does not have a liquor license. Everything was as expected. The tastes are predictable and reliable like McDonalds, very nice low volume piano music gave a romantic feel.\r I gave the place five stars because it is cozy, intimate, reliable, very affordable, with dedicated staff, and privately owned. Pros: Rear dining area for large groups. Good close parking, reliable. Helpful staff. Romantic. Cons: Tight with oversized wheelchair. Now that's grasping at straws. Staff was quick to help. more

Typical American-style Chinese restaurant... 2/10/2005

While Chinese food made for American taste is not for me, this restaurant seems to be typical of that style. There is little that is authentic on the menu and the red booths and dim lights are reminiscent of 60s and 70s American Chinese restaurants before some of us knew what authentic chinese food was. I would only recommend this type of restaurant if it is your style; for those seeking authentic chinese food, look elsewhere. Pros: inexpensive, American-style Cons: not authentic, bad ambience more
