I volunteered to spend some time with the residents at East Side Manor retirement home a couple of years ago. I cleared it with the administration and prepared some material so that we could have a discussion about current events. The residents seemed engaged, but during the session, one of the staff members interrupted and asked (in a very hostile tone) if I was there to sell insurance to the residents. I was puzzled by her question until I realized she overheard me reading an article on rising health care costs. I appreciate the fact that this staff member wanted to protect the residents from unwanted solicitations, but I've never returned because of this puzzling - and uncomfortable - interaction.
