We broke down in Lafayette on our way to TN from Chicago to say goodbye to our dying grandmother (with a 1 year old on board). The guys at Elston were able to diagnose what was wrong with our car and didn't charge us a penny despite the fact that we were unable to have them do the repairs because of warranty coverage. We had a great experience with them and would recommend them highly to anyone having car troubles in the area! more

Run! Hide your vehicle! Without getting into the long and boring details of my horrible experience with these ""mechanics"" (I put this in quotations because every time I actually showed up at the shop it was only staffed by some kid who was definitely not certified in anything) I can tell you that it involves a three week wait time for a job that involved a starter, flywheel, tapping a bell housing, and dropping a transmission twice. I had to fight tooth and nail to get them to return my truck four days after they said it would be finished. When they did return it, which involved me going to the shop and yelling at them because they still did not have the freaking clutch in my truck, they reinstalled the clutch improperly. This led to dangerous driving conditions as my truck was becoming increasingly difficult to get into gear. They even left a grease rag in my front suspension. Their communication is also god awful. Most of the time their listed number is hooked up to a fax machine and when you do get through you get the pleasure of hearing terrible excuses for how slow their service is from a lady who has the personality of a door knob. I would strongly suggest that anybody reading this should find a different mechanic. more

Recently I noticed some drive belt noise when driving my car, and one of my friends told me this place where he got his alternator replaced and he thought it was reasonable priced. So I drove my car here. They checked it and quote me $400+ to fix the problem. This includes removing the tensioner, and they estimate to be 1 hour labor. Definitely crazy - everyone knows this would only take less than 30min. I said I need some time to make a decision; and when I checked out 30min later, they charged me for this 30min as labor. They did not even do a thing to my car in this 30min. Crazy. Later I checked the belt myself (by spraying water - it's simple and effective, just search on youtube) and found out it should just be a misalignment problem; yet they want to replace the pulley and the whole assembly which costs $200+ for the parts. Crazy. I felt I was ripped off. Fortunately that was only $70+ instead of $400+. Overall, I sincerely recommend that you do NOT service your car here. I was hoping that I finally found a trustworthy and reasonably priced auto repair business in Lafayette area; unfortunately, this one is not. more

Will never go again 5/19/2012

I strongly recommend that you do not go here. I had my car towed to their garage to have my starter fixed. My dad, a self-taught backyard mechanic who unfortunately lives in a different state, can replace a starter in 30 minutes or less. Elston Auto, a ""professional"" mechanic, charged me 1.2 hours in labor for replacing the starter. I am convinced that only someone reading step by step instructions from google would take that much time, not someone who repairs cars for a living. Not only did they take their time to replace my starter, but they also repaired another part on my car, without my knowledge or approval. Nothing like going to pick up my car to find out I owed more than I anticipated. I also did not like the way they handled my complaints. They were very unprofessional about it. They are crooks and they know it. I will NEVER take my car there again and I will never again pay for one of their lunch breaks. Not only will I not recommend Elston Auto to anyone out there, I will strongly recommend that you DO NOT go there. more

Best auto repair shop in Lafayette! 11/1/2011

I have to say, that I would take my vehicle back to Elston's over and over again. I have a discount at McCord's because of where I work and will never step foot in there ever again. They knew I had an issue with my ABS system when they replaced my brakes and they neglected to relay that information either because they caused the issue or didn't want to bother with replacing it. McCord's made me feel as if they were 'bothered' by me bringing in my vehicle for a simple brake job and tried to jack up the price on a quote I had already gotten earlier in the week. Elston's pin-pointed the issue with my ABS warning light quickly. They went above and beyond looking into this problem when it wasn't the reason why I brought the car in to begin with. Becks is a major joke and a HUGE rip-off! I took my vehicle there earlier in the year for an electrical issue and they simply stated they 'recommended' a tune up. But there was 'no hurry' in getting it done. It wasn't until I took my vehicle to Elston's the end of October that they found out my plugs and plug wires were ORIGINAL. They had over 160,000 miles on them! Elston's took the time to comb over my vehicle. They didn't pressure me in making unnecessary repairs. They were very honest and the prices were very reasonable.\r They are located just off 100 W. Easy to find. The garage is on private property and because they are locally owned and operated, they are very busy. Be prepared to part with your vehicle for a couple of days for anything major. Regardless, they stayed after hours on a Saturday to make sure that I had my vehicle back (I only have one vehicle and needed it for work). All potential repairs were reviewed with me before anything was touched or ordered. They are capable of running diagnostics to pinpoint issues that would turn on check engine lights. After it was done, everything that was found was shown to me and the bill was gone over in great detail before I paid. Great job Elston Auto Repair! Other than the wait, everything was top notch! If you are looking for an Auto Repair shop that's honest and reasonable, Elston's is the place to go! I do believe they work on foreign cars too and will give the option of replacing parts with original parts if that is your hearts desire. more

TRUSTED LAFAYETTE AUTO REPAIR!! 9/27/2011

I'm a student at purdue away from home, and my car has broken down twice - Elston was able to repair it in a matter of days on both occasions. The service is friendly, quick, and reliable. They are better than my shop back home that I've trusted. They have state of the art technology for the electrical problems my car had. They also provided towing for a cheaper rate than the competition. Highly recommended! more

Elston's Auto Repair Lafayette, IN 9/9/2011

I have been all over Lafayette with my car repairs and have never found a place that I liked enough to stick with. That ended when I found Elston's Auto Repair! I first took my car to them because I made the mistake of going to another place in town and paying for the worst hack job I've ever had. Elston Auto went out of their way to show me exactly what was wrong with my car and went into detail on how things should work and what they needed to do to fix the problems. I've been back to them for all my car needs and have yet to be disappointed! I love that I'm supporting a privately owned business and not a corporation and I felt like they really cared about my car and doing things the right way instead of slamming it together as fast as they could to get the next car in. They're very affordable and will work with you on any issue. I really appreciated the time they took to break down the bill for me so I knew exactly where my money was going and they took me out numerous times to show me the work they had done on my car. I felt like I DEFINITELY got more than my money's worth and would recommend them to anybody! If you're looking for great people, affordable prices, and amazing work, then I suggest Elston's Auto Repair! more

Honest, Knowledgeable, Affordable...Fantastic! 8/29/2011

I first went to Elston Auto because of their reviews online. I was a bit skeptical when I found a small garage in a residential neighborhood, but working with them on several repairs and tune ups has left me with an amazing impression. The people at the garage are great to work with, make sure you know exactly what they found, if it is important to the car, and what your options are. I have saved money, or found out a repair is less than I thought it would be every time I have gone here after asking about it at another garage. They worked with me to fit my schedule and get my car back as soon as possible. My car is running better than ever thanks to them! more

Elston's Auto Repair Lafayette In 8/26/2011

Elston's Auto is the best auto repair shop that I have ever been to! I went to four different mechanics all of which could not diagnose the problems I was having with my 98 Blazer. After walking in, the owner looked me in the eye, shook my hand and assured me that he was going to fix my car and fix it well while doing so as cheaply as possible. They take the time to explain the problem and to show you the parts that have been replaced. They do it all, I also took my 2nd car there for a clutch problem,and he had it fixed for me in a matter of a few hours. I was surprised to find out that they even did clutch repairs because many shops that I called couldn't do the job. They fixed my car way cheaper than I was quoted at any another shop! I highly recommend Elston's Auto for Auto repairs! I will not take my car anywhere else from this point on, they are Awesome!!!! more

Fixed my car fast! 3/10/2011

I brought my car there for some work recently, they took good care of my car, found the bad parts, showed me what was wrong and got the new parts changed fast! Everything has been working great since. I would certainly go there rather then any of the other places Ive been. more

Great mechanic, Honest, quick and not too expensive. We go there for service even though its a little farther since we moved to our new house. I would recommend them, we have always been very happy with the work and prices! more

not your average place 11/2/2010

In my opinion, this is the best place for auto repairs in Lafayette hands down. I have never met such a nice guy and great place to work on your car. Elston auto is the opposite of those greedy dealerships. I called Raisor Service and they are charging $95 an hour labor! So if you want the job done right and at a more FAIR price, check out them! They even fix my old parts and got it working again, most shops would have just charged me $$$ for tons of NEW parts and more labor! thanks again and my car is still running GREAT!!\r \r \r more
