Awesome cakes in SA!!! 5/18/2011

I love Elms Cake Shoppe, AWESOME delicious cakes...We've been getting our cakes here for years for our kids birthday parties. They even have a picture on their website of a cake I had them specially made for my fiance and it came out GREAT so much detailed. My BF is a boxer and I had them make a cake with boxing gloves on them. It was so good and the price was very reasonable compared to others. If you like cake from scratch Elms is the place to get it at compared to other locals like Lucys. Keep doing what you do best making awesome cakes. more

rude service, extra stress 3/10/2011

There are alot of great cake shops in San Antonio that can handel a wedding cake for 250 people, but the price was right at Elms. Days before my wedding the owner called me to tell me he misquoted me and I was going to have to pay him $90 or I was going to be out 75 slices of cake. The problem was not that I couldn't come up with the money it was that he called me 4 days before my wedding and told me they need the money the next day. After admitting he made a mistake, his wife claims that no mistake was ever made and that I didn't understand something. They are rude and after everything was over I felt robed and mistreated, in the future I will go to a shop who will give me the correct price in the first place and take responsability for their mistakes. more

We would like to thank Elms bake shop for a great experience with our wedding cakes. The cakes were exactly as we had asked and the compliments are still coming in. The bake shop worked with us from start to finish and even gave some needed suggestions. Thank you again for helping make our wedding a success, we look forward to working with you again soon. Pros: Know what they are doing. more

DON'T GET WHAT YOU ORDER 8/31/2009

NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE BAKERY OR ITS OWNERS. THEY DO NOT RESPECT OR VALUE THEIR CUSTOMERS. DO NOT BOTHER GIVING THEM SPECIFIC DETAILS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THE DETAILS THAT YOU REQUEST. THEY DO THERE OWN COLORS AND DETAILS YET CHARGE OUTRAGEOUS PRICES. IF YOUR NOT HAPPY AT TIME OF PICK UP TOO BAD YET THEY WILLIOFFER TO REDO IT KNOWING THERE IS NO TIME TO GET BACK TO PICK IT UP ON THE DAY THAT IT IS NEEDED. THEY DO NOT GIVE PRICE BREAKS FOR THERE MISTAKES. TRYING TO TALK TO GEORGE IS A JOKE BECAUSE HE IS RUDE AND SUCH AN A$$. HE FINDS NOTHING WRONG WITH BLUE ICING WHEN YOU REQUESTED THE BUTTERCREME ICING FOR A GIRLS BIRTHDAY CAKE AND LIGHT PASTEL COLORED FLOWERS YET PEOPLE THOUGHT THE CAKE WAS BEACH THEME INSTEAD OF A PRINCESS THEME. THE BAKERY IS A JOKE BUT GEORGE IS A BIGGER JOKE. THEY ARE SO VERY UNPROFESSIONAL !!! Pros: NONE Cons: GEORGE IS VERY RUDE more

Elms Bakery & Catering 7/23/2009

We had our wedding cake baked by the elms bakery & catering along with our catering and the compliments we received all night surpassed anything we have ever heard. Not only was the cake delicious and decorated beautifully, but the food was incredible. We agree with all the above comments, and never read any negative comments people put on this website. There are a lot of folks out there that want something for nothing. Bottom line is that they dont want to pay after there services are rendered. This is why the owners George and Sandi are incredible. Please please Elms Bake shoppe never go away without letting us know where you guys are. You are the best Bakery and Catering business ever in all San Antonio. Thank you Elms! Pros: homestyle bakery Cons: none more

WE WILL TELL EVERYONE ABOUT OUR WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU ELMS BAKERY Pros: FINEST INGREDIENTS AND THE FRESHEST TASTE Cons: NONE more

BEST OLD FASHIONED BAKERY IN TEXAS 3/13/2009

Elms bakery has gotten a bad wrap by Phycos like Rachel Bravermen from out of town who never not once did she step foot in that bakery, she merely sent her sister in to select her wedding cake . Her sister took the situation and felt she had to assist her sister b y selecting a design for her. Then Rachel has the audacity of claiming that Elms did not give her the cake she asked for. It was found out later that many other vendors were slammed by this sick individuals antics to try and get her money back. We were told by many of elms bakery brides about this instance. Pros: SCRATCH BAKERY Cons: NONE more

safoodie Clearly Works for this place 7/9/2008

So clearly from the reviews this place is awful and the owner is a bit of a A$$ so that makes me wonder how long safoodie has been working there or if he is the owner. Pros: NONE Cons: The owner is a very rude they cakes are always wrong more

Not for a wedding! 4/6/2008

My sister recommended this place because it's close to her work. Everything is made from scratch which was a huge selling point for me. However... my wedding was in San Antonio, and I live in Houston. I tried to set up an appointment for a Saturday so I could taste a cake, look at a design, etc... I was told that they were always booked on Saturdays ALL DAY so that would be impossible. Whenever I tried to talk about what I wanted on the cake, I was always informed for at least 10 minutes about "how busy" they were. I couldn't get a word in edgewise. It got really annoying! When I finally booked the cake, Sandy told me that I could change whatever I wanted up to 1 month before the wedding. My guest list shrank to 80 people and when I asked her to downsize the cake, she threw a fit. Obviously because it would be less money. She said that she could only do a 2 tier cake for 80 people and I would need to get cake for 130 people if I wanted 3 tiers. I stuck with the 2 tier because I was going to get a groom's cake as well. Speaking of... it was supposed to be carrot with white frosting. At the wedding I was shocked to see the football team's blue and white logo on a brown cake. It looked terrible, and it wasn't even carrot. I was so let down because I was going to surprise my husband, and carrot is his favorite. He doesn't even like chocolate. I spent close to $600 and was sooo disappointed with everything. That was double what my budget was, and I didn't even get what I asked and paid for. When I complained to her, she just said that it must've been a misunderstanding since we did all of our business over the phone. Maybe she should be more accommodating to out of town clients! No refund, nothing. I wouldn't trust them with big events if I were you. They'll take your money and not deliver. Pros: cakes made from scratch Cons: unreliable, unorganized, rude, unaccommodating, hard to contact more

Huge disappointment; Poor service 2/11/2008

I had high hopes for Elm Bake shop to make both the bride and groom cake. I had tasted one of their mother's day cakes and thought that it was delicious. Needless to say, Elm Bake Shop is unreliable. We had scheduled a consultation to decide on the design of the cake. When we got there, no one was there. We stood outside for awhile and then a man came outside and told us that a wedding had gotten moved up and that no one could meet us. Seriously, moving the time of a wedding?? Anyone who is just in the planning stages of a wedding knows that you can't just move a time of a wedding. After we went on our way, I decided to ask a local shop who they use to cater. They said that they used to use Elm Bake Shop until they became unreliable and the local shop had to changed who they use. I found exactly what I wanted through another cake designer. Anyway, book at your own risk. You have been worned. Pros: Cake is tasty Cons: Extremely rude and unreliable more

Best Bakey In San Antonio and South Texas 8/17/2007

I was very shocked to read the below reviews. I have been a customer of the Elms Bake Shoppe since they opened 3 years ago and I have always been impressed by their food and their service. This is the only bakery in San Antonio that makes all their cakes and food from scratch. I have been to all the bakeries in San Antonio, not to mention some of the local favorites, and The Elms Bake Shoppe has always exceeded my expectations. The friendly staff always makes me feel welcome and keeps me coming back for more year after year. The latest experience I had with The Elms Bake Shoppe was when I purchased a birthday cake for my wife?s birthday. My wife is a huge fan of their Italian Creme Cake. There was no doubt that I would order my cake from the Elms Bake Shoppe but I wanted something a little different. I talked to the owner about some of my wife?s favorite interests and she came up with a design that I never thought possible. When I came to pick up the cake, I had a loss of words at how beautiful the cake was. I never knew that a cake could have so much detail and be so beautiful. When I showed my wife her cake, she had tears in her eyes at how beautiful it was. It was such a pleasure to share the cake with our friends and family. The Elms Bake Shoppe made her birthday a very memorable event. Now all my friends and family go to them for their baking needs. Elms Bake Shoppe is a gem to San Antonio. Pros: Food from scratch and great service Cons: Only one location in San Antonio more

Extremely Unprofessional and Deceitful 7/19/2007

When I met with the owner of Elm's Bake Shoppe yesterday for a wedding cake tasting, I was appalled at how unprofessional she was. She appeared at first to be very friendly, but once she saw that I was taking notes on a spreadsheet that compared bakeries, she became very defensive. She started to "trash talk" one of the bakeries on my list and said that no one else makes cakes from scratch in the city except her and the Cake Shop and continued on about how terrible other bakers were. I said that was why I was comparing the tastes of the cake. I mentioned that I had grown up on Lucy's Cake Shop and she said that if that was the case, her cakes were not for me because I could not get Lucy's prices anywhere on her side of town. Again, I explained that was why I was comparing tastes, not sides of town. She said she "could care less" about getting my phone number to call me later and see if I was still interested because she gets so much business she no longer has to do that, like smaller shops will. It was made very clear that my business was not wanted or needed. She obviously did not have the common sense to be a gracious hostess and did not think that welcoming the competition-instead of trashing it-would reflect better on her. Besides the fact that she told me that a 7 oz. bottle of sugar pearls cost $75, even after I told her that I looked up a 4 oz bottle online for $7.50, and after she told me that everyone in town charges a $50 delivery fee (which they don't), her meeting with me only encouraged me to find other bakeries and continue to spread the word about how unprofessional and deceitful this bakery is. more

Elm's Bake Shoppe takes your money & the cake, too! 9/18/2006

Beware Elm's Bake Shoppe! I have ordered from them twice & did not receive what I ordered either time. In 2004, I ordered a 30th birthday cake for my daughter. I ordered hand-molded, fondant flowers in pale pink and paid $85.00 in advance. Big mistake!. I got buttercream flowers (much less expensive) & not in the colors discussed. Fast forward 2006 - Thought I'd give Elm's a scond chance & ordered a cake for my granddaughter's christening. I spent 20 minutes going over how I wanted the cake. Stupidly paid $63.00 in advance. When I picked it up, it was an 8" round (for twenty people!) & did not look at all like what we had discussed. He didn't even follow his own notes & I was paying $8 per one inch slice! The salesperson told me I did not have to take the cake if I did not like it. Since I had 20 guests coming the next day. I took the cake, got three blocks & decided I was crazy for accepting something I did not order & paying an exorbitant price for it not once, but twice! I returned the cake to the salesperson & requested a refund on my credit card. She said I had to talk to George Leyva the owner who took the order. I called him Monday morning (9/18/06) & requested a refund. He was rude & offensive. I explained that this was the 2nd time I had not received what was ordered; he asked why I came back a second time then. I told him it was in support of neighborhood business, but I wouldn't be back. His reply: "Good! We don't want you back!" It deteriorated into a shouting match until I ended it by saying that I simply was requesting a credit to my card, he refused so we had nothing left to say. One misreading of an order can be an accident. This time, given the response of Mr. Leyva, I think it reflects a business practice. Promise the customer anything, but give them what you want while the customer pays an exorbitant price. I call it bait & switch! more
