Two weeks ago my wife, friends and I stopped into El Vaquero after pushing from our neighbors. We had been eating at El Maguay for the half a dozen times before. Now we both feel El Maguay is ""OK"", I have never had anything bad but being a chain I feel some of the food is very bland. But it always ends up being a safe bet. We were told by our neighbors / friends that El Vaquero was head and shoulders above El Maguay so we had them go with us and all gave it a shot. First off the waiter could not understand English, this is commonplace in Mexican restaurants, but when you need to know specifics. (Such as what?s actually in the dish) You will never get a direct answer from someone who can't understand what you?re asking. My Neighbor tends to be a picky eater and doesn't like certain things mixed into his food. (Such as onions) and warned the waiter who promised no onions that if onions were in he would return the dish. Well of course there were onions in the dish and it got returned. So he had to order something he deemed safe of any possible onion contamination and wait for his food. Meanwhile we were all eating ours and wondering why everything tasted a bit ""off"". The sour cream has a hint of sweetness, the beans has a funny after taste, and the main dish (mine was a chimichanga) seemed to be sub par, soggy and over all just plain bad. Top off the mishap on a frozen margarita when it was suppose to be on the rocks, then getting an attitude by a waitress that brought them. We will never return to El Vaquero! Come to find out our Neighbors who highly recommended the place hadn't been there in a few years, so it has obviously gone down hill. El Maguay here we come!
Pros: Full house, good atmosphere
Cons: Bad food, bad service
