I agree with Koritz. It used to be a really fun place, with good strong margaritas and excellent service. The food is nothing special, but we always enjoy it. I went with a few co-workers for lunch a while back, and we were ignored the whole time, the food was not as good as usual, and the overall experience was a bit ""dumpy."" I've also noticed the margaritas aren't what they used to be. A little on the strong side is a good thing, as the flavor is better. Now they just taste like watered down margarita mix. My wife and I have been many times over the years, and we have also noticed the sharp decline in the past year. I think we've been there once only in 2009, which shows how we're starting to feel about that location. I hope they get it back together. more

One of my favorites! 6/26/2008

I have been going to El Maguey since I was a baby.. starting out at the one in Columbia, MO and now various ones in St. Louis, especially the Chippewa one. My family and I have always loved it. Their food is great, and we've never had bad service. They have larger portions and are very fast. Even in large groups, we've never had to wait more than 20 minutes. Which is considerablly less then anywhere else we have tried to eat. Pros: Food, Price, Service Cons: Small more

bluck... 4/27/2007

I thought this place was gross. I grew in up in a small town where ""hole in the wall"" type places is mostly what you get. But this place was just dirty. And beyond run down. Although the food wasn't horrible, I was almost too disgusted to eat. And I'm not a clean freak. The table was clean, but food bits and pieces littered the floors, our booth was from 1970 and looked like it hadn't been cleaned since then. Maybe its a local spot some enjoy but I don't think I can stomach to go back! Pros: you get what you pay for Cons: dirty! more

bad entrees 4/25/2007

I have been to many different resturants including these so-called mexican ones. I've also been to a few different el magueys. being in the business i know what to expect, i hope. lets start with the wait for a table. more

OUR FAVORITE PLACE 1/12/2006

My husband and I go to El Maguey at least once a week for dinner. We can both eat until we are totally full for around $25 and that is with a margarita each! The waiters are really nice and the menu has a lot to offer, including steaks and chicken dishes. Friday nights there will be a wait, but it is totally worth it!! Pros: cheap food, fast service Cons: busy on friday nights more

Best mexican food in St. Louis 8/7/2005

Born and raised in texas, I searched all over St. Louis in search for some comperable mexican food. Though i found some tasty restaurants none seemed to really compare to the mexican food back home. However, El Maguey is not only the best mexican resaturant in St. Louis but their Fajitas could probably rival those of most restaurants in Texas. In addition to the fajitas for one being enough for at least two meals, the margaritas are delicious. If you are up for it you can buy a ""monster margarita"" which will be more than enough for you to be able to convince whoever you are with to drive you home. Pros: Inexpensive more

Best Fajitas in town! 3/22/2004

The Fajitas Especial el Maguey is wonderful, with beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo sausage. And the iron skillet is packed with meat, peppers, onions and tomatoes. Order some extra pico de gallo relish and eat for two from the ""uno persona"" platter. The Concord Plaza location was remodeled in the past 12-18 months and has a wonderful ambience. Pros: taste, value more

Great Mexican Food!! 2/7/2004

This is some of the best Mexican food around, and you definitely don't go home hungry. The price is one that can't be beat, either.. Pros: Great taste, lots of food, inexpensive Cons: crowded, small more
