Best

If you're up in the area, give this a try. The menu has many many items on it, and I think that can make one feel overwhelmed. I also think that it causes the restaurant to lose ...

Worst

A huge disappointment! Service was mediocre at best. Waiter had a bad attitude from the moment he realized we weren't ordering drinks and full meals. We are all trying to watc...

Best Tex Mex and margaritas 6/29/2011

Best Tex Mex and margaritas in SA, hands down!!! more

I had the chicken mole and it was delish! 6/27/2011

On our most recent visit, I had the chicken mole and it was delish! My husband had a pork dish and that was good too. We ate on the patio since the weather was nice. The decor needs to be spiffed up, it's getting run down both inside and outside, but the food is quite good. This could be a more desirable dining destination if they spruced up the place. The patio has lots of potential, especially since it has a fireplace. more

Really great food 6/24/2011

Really great food, really great service and they clearly put a lot of thought into the decor. more

The salsa tastes super fresh 6/20/2011

Let me start off by saying I'm a fan of the queso and salsa at El Jarro. The salsa tastes super fresh, and has a nice kick to it, and the queso has tasty chunks of roasted chili's...muy bueno. I was tempted to lick the bowl...but instead I found a chip shaped just right, and scraped every last drop out. The guacamole is good too, but, as is always the case, dependent on the quality of the avocados. If there's one bad one in the bunch, then it's easy to pick up on that taste.I went for carne asada, which was cooked to order, and hit the spot. Or rather, it would have hit the spot, if the spot hadn't already been rapid fired at by the chips, salsa, queso and green stuff. More on that below. It came with a green chicken enchilada, which had good flavors but was a bit dry (nothing a dousing with any or all of the above 3 accoutrements wouldn't fix, though). I really enjoyed the rice...lite and fluffy, and flavored just right. I tried to finish it all, but towards the end of the meal as I was robotically shoveling it toward my pie hole, it began spilling out of my mouth and making a mess, so I had to throw in the napkin. more

I love the food here 6/17/2011

I love the food here. Excellent veggie options when I'm not feeling carnivorous. I feel leaving stuffed, but not like I want to kill myself like I do after Tex-Mex more

live music on weekend nights 6/15/2011

I see El Jarro has mixed reviews but I like this place. You almost always need to come prepared for a wait, though, I'll warn you of that. Luckily, you can find chips, salsa, and strong margaritas at the bar to pass the time. The food is really pretty good. I ate here recently with a large group of some of my favorite family members and we all shared and sampled each other's orders. It's different from your typical greasy Tex-Mex but I sort of like that it's a bit more fresh and possibly slightly healthier than average. Possibly. I can agree that it's possibly a bit overpriced for what you get. But, the cost isn't extreme either. The service could use some work. The waiters were certainly friendly when they were around, but tended to disappear for a bit too long. What's fun at El Jarro is the live music on weekend nights. But you have to plan ahead, because lots of people show up and it takes a long time to get a table! Now, go... have fun! more

The mole was the best! 6/10/2011

The mole was the best!!!! Great variety for Sumday brunch. Would highly recommend it more

fantastic 6/8/2011

El Jarro is an institution! Hard to believe that I've been going there almost 30 years now. We always have amazing food, the Maria's Tortillas are a must and quintessentially San Antonio, the tortillas themselves are second to none - made fresh on site, and margaritas hit the spot. Their weekday lunch buffet is always incredibly delicious, and the live evening entertainment is the perfect complement for an absolutely fun evening. Thank you, El Jarro, for all the wonderful years of special (and everyday) events. Don't ever change. My only comment is that they're not open for weekend brunch or breakfast. That would surely be fantastic! more

actually feels and looks authentic 6/7/2011

GREAT Mexican restaurant 6/6/2011

El jarro is a GREAT Mexican restaurant on the North side of town. It is not the fanciest looking restaurant, but has an enjoyable atmosphere nonetheless. It is a great romantic date restaurant! The patio is lovely, and everything I've tried has been excellent. The service is pretty decent, and the prices are decent. Great food and great atmosphere. A very enjoyable dinner experience! more

Memories 6/3/2011

El Jarro holds a place in my heart from the days of the 24th Street store. That was where I could be found on Sunday mornings for years, just before going up to Jefferson High School to play football on the front lawn. This store is excellent. Good food, drinks, atmosphere, and, often, entertainment. more

Delicioso!!! 6/1/2011

Dinner on a Sat night w another couple. Wife had a chile rellano that she said was good but not great. I had a Salmon special w a light cream sauce. Came w asparagus and a fantastic salad. It was the envy of all my dinner-mates. Delicioso!!! Service was good when we first got there but by the time we ready to leave was very busy. more

I love this place 5/27/2011

I love this place. It's right around the corner from my house and gets me out of pinches when I don't have time to cook. more

perfect 5/26/2011

First and foremost, the atmosphere, ambiance, and their margaritas are nothing short of perfect. Live music playing R&B from the 1960's and 1970's usually dominates the scene on Friday and Saturday nights more

Really excellent! 5/24/2011

So if you are looking for really cheap this is not it. But cloth napkins, tableclothes, and really excellent food and service. Throughly enjoyed a late afternoon lunch. more

Hands down the best!!! 5/23/2011

Hands down best salsa in San Antonio! I absolutely love their rice, charro beans, nachos, flautas, fajita tacos, basically everything! Their enchiladas were greasy one time...but usually they are perfect! They also have the ultimate margarita here....believe it's called the Arturo. Puro patron and a splash of lime. The best!!! (So strong my sister took a picture with the bus boy b/c she thought he was our waiter.) I miss you El Jarro! more

I could live on it! 5/19/2011

I'm from the southeast, so great Mexican food is few and far between for me. But let me tell you El Jarro is a place I could have eaten until I died from over indulgence. Simply amazing food. Tortillas are made fresh, by hand, right inside the restaurant. Everything I had was fantastic. It was so good I can't remember if I had anticuchos (and made my own tacos on the fresh tortillas) or if I had the fajitas [pretty close to the same thing] ... but the food was amazing. I considered moving to San Antonio so that I could eat at El Jarro regularly. more
