El Cactus

The food was good each of the last 2 times we ate there but the prices are a little pricey for a pizza shop atmsosphere. Anyway, this time we decided to get a take out order. 3 people and around $50. I ask at the counter if they put in some tortilla chips. She said no, it would cost extra. I nicely asked why extra since they serve chips and salsa before dinner when you eat in. She just said 'they're complimentary'. I said, yes, why not complimentary to go as well? I asked if prices to go where cheaper? She said no. So again I said then why not? She looked at me like i had four heads and said 'do you want them or not?' This was not a kid either. It's the principal. $50 for a to-go dinner. And for probably .50 cents, they lost us as a customer. Some restaurants just don't get it. more

The food is very good. A small place but quiet. If you're disappointed then you're just plain picky. more

Since moving into the area from out west, we've been trying to find a good, basic Mexican restaurant while being reasonable - this is PA, after all. Unfortunately, El Cactus just doesn't fit the bill - we found the food to generally be lacking in flavor. I tried the enchiladas, and they came covered in what tasted like an odd, weak tomato sauce. I love Mexican food...the spices and the flavors are amazing. El Cactus brings out all these flavors very accurately. The food is wonderfully authentic and great tasting. If you like spicey Mexican food, you came to the right place. Even if you don't, it's still good - and any entree can be made mild or hot. Not good for big parties of people, but perfect for a small intimate setting. Service is always prompt and friendly. Again, I stress, the food is awesome! Tiny place in a not-so-desirable shopping center, but once you're inside, it's beautiful. Tables closely set, with Fiestaware dishes (personal fave). Great tortilla chips, better salsa! Owners are the waitstaff and chef, so personal attention to the diner is at its peak. I enjoyed a wonderful bowl of tortilla soup and an enchilada. Spicy, but tastefully so (in that the flavor wasn't masked by the spice). Would recommend arriving during ""early bird"" times, or during the week, or it may take a long time to be seated.
