Durbar 84

Working in the RTP area I make it out to a lot of the area restaurants, and had noticed this place a few times before trying it out. I'm glad I did! The lunch buffet was comparable to other Indian restaurants in size and selection, but the flavors and execution here are a notch above the rest. The naan was excellent, as were the vegetarian dishes on the buffet. The buffet price is also reasonable for lunch at $7.95. The menu has a lot of interesting items, which I will be back to check out another time. I would recommend giving this place a try. My wife and I tried Durbar out this weekend and really enjoyed it. Though it was Saturday and the buffet looked good, we opted to order just Nepalese dishes from the menu after reading all the great reviews. Everything was delicious! We started off with some roti and aloo ka achaar, which is a potato salad with a hot tumeric dressing, onions, and peppers. The aloo tama is a earthy, pungent, and aromatic dish of chickpeas and bamboo shoots. Be sure to try the absolutely delicious momos- savory steamed dumplings served with a tangy and spicy sauce. The rice pudding is far superior to any we've had elsewhere in the triangle. Shyam, the host, was very friendly and and fun to talk to. We talked about several of the reviews here and elsewhere as well as the pictures on flickr. Durbar does not have a liquor license at this point so there was not beer or wine, but it sounds like they may someday get one. The goat curry mentioned in several reviews is not a menu item but is always served on the Saturday buffet. Other regular Saturday buffet items include aloo tama, the rice pudding, and many Indian favorites. My wife and I are big fans of Indian (we've been regulars at Sitar since Kashmir closed, and enjoy the nearby Spice & Curry and Tandoor) and were happy to see dishes such as malai kofta, matar panir, and rogan josh among the 84 items on the menu. We will definitely be back!!! If you want a taste of Nepal along with your Indian food, Durbar 84 is the place to go -- especially if you get the buffet. Not only do they serve tasty North Indian cuisine, but the addition of Nepali dishes makes this an extra special dining experience (ask the owners - they are extremely helpful and informative about the Nepali dishes). We especially enjoyed the goat curry, the rice pudding (best we've ever had) and the Nepali potato salad in the garnish and dessert section. You'll also appreciate the sounds of authentic music from Nepal, making the experience all the more pleasant. We liked the relaxed, family atmosphere and the owners' genuine hospitality -- too rare among Indian restaurants in the Triangle in our experience. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to taste the Tibetan momos, but we will next time. If you're curious about what ""Durbar"" means, it's a square in Kathmandu. The food was excellent, the service even better. Well worth trying. Try the goat curry - as good as it gets. Pros: Good food, good service Cons: No India beer, actually, no beer of any kind. more

Looking at all your 3 comments on same day it just made me sick and it tells clearly that they (Durbar 84) must be stealing your business and you are trying to turn them down but they are not going to be down and still changed a lot inside and out. Their quality has be up everytime I visit them more

Like some reviewer said I tried their MOMO this week. It was Great. Plus their food is Great. Not really spiced it up like most other indian restaurant. Friendly staff and great service. It took a little time to get the food but it was delicious. more

I have eaten at Durbar 84 several times. I highly recommend the food if you love Indian food. It's a nice change from the other places in the area. The chicken tikka masala is delicious, as well as the momo (dumplings), naan, tandoori chicken, naan, and samosas. The lunch buffet is a good bargain because the price includes drinks. The buffet typically has the traditional offerings, chicken curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, pakoras, naan, aloo gobi, daal, and many others. In addition, the dinner menu is made to order. Don't miss out on Dunbar 84, a fine little restaurant with a nice homey touch and a courteous and attentive staff. Dunbar's curry menu features all the Indian/Pakistani curry ""standards,"" and a few new surprises (for most of us, at least) from Nepal. As one reviewer said, ""Try the momos!"" They are spicy, delectable little steamed dumplings with a big kick, a new treat for two veteran curry lovers. We went for Friday night dinner and enjoyed privacy and a wonderful dinner of saag aloo (my personal favorite, a curried spinach and potato dish which was nicely prepared in the more Indian puree style) and a delectable curried lamb dish (so said my husband), a huge bread sampler basket (we brought home a full box, after sampling a great deal with dinner of the naan and assorted paratha offerings, all nicely done), a shared dessert of gulab jamun (which never disappoints!) and a very nice spiced chai. (One thing they do not have yet is an iced tea machine, but they said it is coming soon.) We are looking forward to returning for the buffet lunch, where additional Nepalese dishes await. more

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food here, which takes a little time to come out of the kitchen because it is a small operation with a home-cooked feeling. I greatly enjoy the Bombay Grill around the corner, but would also come here to eat the Nepalese cuisine and try some different Northern Indian dishes. The sauces were flavorful and lighter compared to the densely spiced Indian food I've eaten. The service could have been more attentive since it took some time to get the check, but it was a quiet, very casual place that was a good spot for me and my boyfriend to chat during a weekday dinner date. Durbar 84 been in business for little over 2 months and been going there for almost 3-4 times a week and loved their food. They have fresh cooking. Might have to wait a little but its worth it more
