Duke University

It is a great campus that shows the financial strength of the university. The buildings, even the newer buildings, do not have the build quick, sacrifice look, quiality of some other universities. I find the Duke gardens and the Chapel always a nice place ti visit during the summer. For out of towners, it may also be interesting to visit the campus during basketball season and walk by the tent city. Of all the university campuses I have been, this dedication to Basketball is unique. The quality of Duke education may be pricey, but worth the money. Lots of financial aid available and Duke is actively recruiting low and middle income students to attend. more

Duke has a very pretty campus, especially the more gothic inspired West Campus. The chapel is very lovely (and frequently open), and it's nice when they have music; concerts are sometimes held there, and i think they have a sung vespers service once a week. The one drawback is that parking can sometimes be a pain when there's a big event, like a game. more

Note: I am currently a grad student at Duke Duke University is one of those "grand institutions" that didn't make the selective Ivy League (think Stanford, MIT, CalTech). The buildings are styled after "gothic" architecture but look more like castle fortifications to me. Nevertheless, when framed artistically by romantic, drooping tree, flowers, and quads of green, green grass, Duke really appears quite comfortable and appealing to the eye. Do not take the infamous Chapel for granted, either; it's stately position in the heart of campus is quietly noble. As a graduate student, I reside primarily in the Medical Center, which is north of the Chapel. The research breadth and depth is truly astounding here. The recently built Center for Human Genome Sciences is just another example of the type of ambitious collaborations and research endeavors that go on daily at Duke. The hospital is definitely a landmark within the city of Durham. I cannot speak much of the undergraduate life at Duke, but it seems freshmen are housed in East campus, which is about a mile from the main campus. The purpose of this is to establish unity, I suppose, not necessarily a bad thing. The undergrads are required to spend 3 years living on campus. I've heard of there being a sort of "stereotype" amongst the students, and I have to admit, most of the men look like they shop solely at Abercrombie & Fitch (why pay $60 for meticulously cut up jeans?!! and pop that collar down!). The females are much, much worse; their "uniform" is a tight t-shirt/polo over those hideous pleated mini skirts, flip flops, and a Louis Vuitton handbag (and believe me, it's the Real thing). So it seems most of these kids are living large on daddy's platinum card.....figures, considering the tuition. Don't get me wrong. Duke University is a name respected around the world (even my relatives in Taiwan and China have heard of it). It will look impressive on your resume. The quality of scientific research here is top notch, so I assume it can't be too shabby in the other disciplines. Just beware of the "clone" factor. more

I attended Duke University for all four years of college, and it was a great experience. Classes were excellent, campus was beautiful, and the basketball was of course awesome. The drawback is, naturally, the pricetag. Financial aid was kind to me, but not to all, and frankly $40,000/year is probably more than any undergraduate education is worth. That said, I don't regret my loans, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. more

Duke University was one of my choices to look at colleges. I just adore the campus, it is so pretty. The people all seem friendly and not snobby like their stereotype at all. I met with a few of the professors, who all were just so great. My final decision came down to the cost of the school, and unfortunately I couldn't afford it. But I highly recommend this school to anyone who can afford it! more

Beautiful campus, great athletics, and great academics. Duke is definitely a national university, that brings with it many educational possibilities and options that can't be found elsewhere (though with a hefty price tag!). Beyond the school itself, the famous Duke Chapel and Duke Botanical Gardens are worth a visit, as is the neo-gothic architecture of the west campus, as compared to the traditional southern styled east campus. more

Although it's an academic school, you can also find many interesting place to explore. It's a friendly community. Except the famous basketball team, the beautiful scenery in Duke Garden are constantly changes in different seasons. You can also make friends in their weekly International Coffee Connection at the basement of the Chapel. more

Duke university i dont like the sports there because i am a tarheel fan but I do like the Church they have on the campus it is one of the pretiest i have seen and is very nice and from way back so it has a lot of meaning to it and is a nice place to just take it all in and examine it. The campus is also nice and spread out. more
