Best

My boyfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary with dinner at The Driskoll last night. We both chose the 7 course dinner and for both of us it was the best dining experience...

Worst

I just returned home from for my disappointing 30th birthday stay at the Driskill. First, our room was tiny - the bed comprised nearly the entire room - and the air conditioning ...

Not what we had hoped for - dissapointing 11/12/2006

We ate at the Driskill in celebration of my wife's birthday and our experience was very dissapointing. After seeing the Chef on Iron Chef we were extremely excited about our trip to the Driskill. Not only was the service average but the menu was not that exciting and the food simply was not that good. We each went with the 3-course menu, my wife choosing the quail as her second course and it was awful. My steak was fatty and not that tasty. We love food and the Driskill is simply not what it is advertised to be, especially for the money spent. Don't go unless someone else is paying!! Pros: classic setting Cons: not worth the $$ - poor experience more

great for a bar visit but thats all 10/5/2006

We stayed at the Driskill for one night on the 4rth floor - which is I believe part of the original part of the building, it was extremely cramped and the bathroom subpar (ive seen better for cheaper, which was disapointing because it was renovated) the room itself was charming tho. The bar and lobby are really great but you can walk in off the street to see that. The cafe wasnt all that great I felt, kinda cheesy - texan named dishes that werent texan quality. I will definatly visit the bar next time tho its great. Dont waste your money - buy a tour package that tours austins history and they will take you there for that as well.... more

Don't do it 10/5/2006

The lobby is beautiful. The rooms are tiny and VERY expensive. The staff are arrogant and rude. I stayed there for my honeymoon and upon arrival did not have my wallet for them to ""swipe my credit card."" They would not let us check in, even after agreeing that I had given them my CC # when I made the reservation and would have charged it if we had not shown up! My wife had to write a check for the room! The room was a ""suite"" with a small, but nice balcony overlooking 6th St. The room itself was barely bigger than the bed in it...Literally. The fancy marble shower flooded the bathroom floor because there was no drip sill to stop the water. I expected way more for over $400 a night. My biggest complaint was how we were treated by the staff, however. more

Great for a special night out! 9/26/2006

I definitely understand why this restaurant was rated #1! Everything was absolutely spectacular. The waiters were informative and friendly. The food was so delicious and not over complicated like other fancy restaurants. I personally didn't think it was expensive at all, but I grew up in New York City. I highly recommend going for a special birthday or any celebration! more

The finest in austin!! Posh and great waiters 8/20/2006

My goodness it is expensive but it is worth the money. The china and silverware wow! Must I go on huh?? The food is incredible and yes it is fine dining to the max. Special birthday anniversaries a must!~You will no go wrong coming to the Driskall and yes it really is haunted oooooooooooooh. A must see. highly recommend Pros: greatest food Cons: pricy $$$$ more

Woedully Disappointing and Highly Overrated 5/11/2006

I took my family of 6 there for a combo special occasion: an early Mother's Day and my stepson's departure for 3 years to Okinawa with the Marines. I thought I'd try the Driskill given the nice reviews and momentum that is seemed to enjoy, bypassing our standards rotation of The Four Seasons, Bistro 88, Castle Hill, and Vespaio. What a major disappointment! THe service was the equivalent of Applebee's on a bad night. The food was inconsistent. Admittedly, some of the dishes were exquisite, but some were served beyond their peak. I don't normally complain about service, but for a $500 meal, I expect near perfection. The Driskill Grill simply does not deliver. I'd take a client there, on the company expense bill, but I won't take my family there again. Pros: some entrees Cons: service, service, service more

beautiful 1/5/2006

My family and I always recommend to our out of town guests who like to stay in downtown for a full experience - they just have to atleast stay at the Driskill for 1 night. Experience the history of it, the food, staff & atmosphere. Always an experience for anyone from out of town. Pros: Staff, Food, Location more

Simply Magnificent!!! 10/28/2005

Staying at the Driskill is a must if you are staying in Austin. We have travelled all over the US and The Driskill ranks among the most memorable hotels we have ever stayed at and the rates are very reasonable considering the quality of the stay. You won't regret it or...forget it!! Pros: great location, affordable luxury, elegant & spotless Cons: parking more

A really great restaurant.... 6/5/2005

A really great restaurant that is exceptional in every regard.... Pros: Wine List more

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful! 5/18/2005

The Driskill is beautiful! Lobby, Driskill Grill, select suites. Caveat emptor - book directly with the Hotel so you know what you're getting. The ""traditional"" (newer) rooms are just plain ol' hotel rooms. The ""historical"" are quite nice, though some are oddly-shaped or small. But if you book the right room and don't come when the hotel's too busy to give great service, you'll make memories! Pros: historic beauty, memorable Cons: parking, inconsistent service more

Not Impressed 9/17/2004

I stayed at the Driskill on business. Even though I had made a reservation for two nights, the hotel had me staying for only one night. My law firm sent an overnight FedEx to me for Friday morning delivery. I did not receive it until Saturday morning, well after the time I needed it, because the hotel staff could not find it. The room was small - the bathroom even smaller. I expected more for $350 per night. Pros: Location Cons: , Price, Rooms more

Beautiful... 5/31/2004

The front desk staff, valet and bellman were the nicest I have ever met. I stay all over the world and this hotel was among the best. Not your average corporate chain. Rooms were historic and elegant with all of the amenities of modern hotels. Comfortable beds with down comfortors and great robes in the rooms- Pros: Good food, On 6th Street more

Great... 3/13/2004

Fantastic meal. Great, esoteric wines at fair prices. Staff was warm, inviting, gracefull, extremely professional (a rare find for Austin.) My companion and I can't recommend this super-fabulous restaurant enough.... Pros: Cute staff, Super wine list more

Perfect Meal! 2/18/2004

My husband and I went to the Driskill Grill to celebrate and we found the PERFECT place. Our meal was OUTSTANDING. By FAR the best meal I've had since moving to Austin. Also, the service and atmosphere are commendable. The bar at the Driskill Hotel was ideal for after-dinner drinks. I cannot recommend the Driskill Grill highly enough!!!! Pros: Romantic, BEST FOOD IN AUSTIN, Good Service more

Believe the Hype 10/26/2003

Chef David Bull has gotten a lot of press lately, and the Austin Statesman just named the Driskill Grill the best restaurant in the city. So, are they exaggerating? Nope, not at all! The food is remarkably good, and the waitstaff was the best I've come across yet. If you're not rich or working with an expense account, this is a very pricey restaurant. But for VERY special occasions, it's worth every penny. The ONLY caveat I offer is that the restaurant is a bit nosier than I'd have expected (there were several large, talkative parties), which means that, while the ambience is elegant, it's not necessarily an ideal place for a romantic evening. So, IF you want to take a loved one there for a romantic evening, be sure to call ahead for a reservation and ask for a (relatively) secluded table, where you can have an intimate conversation. Pros: Magnificent food, attentive service Cons: very expensive, a bit noisy more

growl 1/23/2003

The Driskell hotel was amazing! I think that is it is the most romantic place to have a little fun without being distrubed! Its number one in my book! Pros: Good Service Cons: Parking more

Not so good... 9/30/2002

We come to Austin every month or two and usually stay at the Four Seasons. We decided to try the Driskill. The service was sub-optimal, we could not get room-service on the phone (had to walk down and order food in the Cafe), our towels had large holes in them, and the housekeeping staff was extremely loud early in the AM. My advice? The lobby is beautiful, but that's it...stay at the Four Seasons! more

dream vacation 8/9/2002

What's not to love? It's historic, it's haunted, it's almost ridiculously beautiful. I can't say enough about how great the Driskill is. more

Excellent Five Star 8/8/2002

This is a restaurant you do not want to miss. Elegance describes all aspects of it. The dinning room is one of the most beautiful is the city. The service provided is the most superior I have ever experienced-and I have dined all over the world. The cuisine is exceptional , all courses were not only delicious but had magnificent presentation. I highly recomend a fantastic dinning experience at the Driskill Grill. more

Exquisite 6/27/2002

Had a biz lunch here and it was superb. Food was a bit dainty, but the flavor makes up for that. Service was fantasitc, prices weren't outrageous for such an elegant setting and fine food. Great place. Pros: high quality food, high quality service Cons: pricey more
