THE DRAUGHT HOUSE! not the alamo draft house, but the rural-home-turned-pub on Medical Pkwy & 42nd. Best pub in the city.

Relaxed 11/29/2008

This is a great place to sit back and have a few pints. The beer selection is great and the atmosphere is even better. Very relaxed crowd, you can bring your dog, drink in the parking lot. It's just a great place to just hang out. One of those places you can only find in Austin... Cheers more

Best kept Austin secret EVER!!! Dog friendly and drink in the parking lot! 9/17/2008

I cannot recommend this place enough. Here's why: it's very different from anywhere else. First off, it's a private local business, not a chain, so they get to call their own shots. Which translates to: drink beer in the PARKING LOT while sitting in the back of your car or a lawn chair. Very dog friendly. Great private location: very hard to find the first time, but there's no traffic, so you can stumble around freely. I'm not sure how this place deals with TABC and open container law...but nowhere else have I heard of being able to take your drink outside in the parking lot!! They also microbrew some of their tap beer. Nightly specials include house beer at $2.50 a pint. Every once in a while they'll have Double IPA on 2.50 special, which is a very strong beer. Food is delicious. There are pizza options and a bowl of finger pub grub, which is an amazing mixture of pretzels and other delicious unnamed things. I've seen people bring in their own snacks and chips, so they're not strict on that. All I've gotta say is that with these great prices and such great tasting beer, make sure you have someone sober to drive you home. You will most likely get much, much drunker than you planned to. I guarantee that. This place is just THAT great. Pros: Delicious house microbrews at $2.50 a pint, very friendly atmosphere, dog friendly, drink in the parking lot, yeah!! Cons: Have someone drive you there. You will not be able to drive afterwards. more

Worst pub experience in Texas, rude bartenders 9/15/2008

Worst pub experience in all of Texas. Rude staff. I'm a native Texan and a proud Austinite. My friends and I went here last night following a movie to grab a drink. The second we walked through the door the bartenders, a brunette man and a blonde woman, began SCREAMING from ACROSS THE ROOM at us to show our IDs. We were a little taken aback because 1.) We are of legal Texas drinking age, members of our party were 22-28, to give you an idea and 2.) I have never in my life encountered such rudeness and hostility in Texas in a pub of all places! Needless to say, after BOTH of the bartenders began to yell at us while we were quietly talking and deciding what to order (their prices of $5 for a glass of draft were a little high by Texas standards) we decided to walk out. Instead, we went to Crown & Anchor and had an amazing experience there as usual! After seeing so many positive reviews, I'm really shocked no one else had our experience. We honestly encountered the rudest, most impatient bartenders at the Draught House last night. And I have no idea why they were so impatient.... we were the only ones in there. My advice, don't go here unless you want to submit to being yelled by impatient staff with terrible manners. There are so many great pubs/bars in Austin and the Draughthouse is just not worth it. Pros: Didn't see any Cons: Rude bartenders, Awful more

Great beer selection! Excellent place to just hang with friends 7/3/2008

I went here several weeks ago and I loved it!! They have an excellent selection of beers. You can hang outside on the bench and they have a beer garden area, also it is dog friendly which was great for me. Prices are reasonable for the beer that they have. This isn't a place you go to eat, unless you get a little tipsy and you need something to soak up the alcohol. You come here for the beer and boy oh boy is it good beer. If you want to go somewhere to hang out casually and enjoy great beer then this is the place. Pros: beer selection, dog friendly, casual Cons: not close enough to my house more

read the fine print 10/29/2007

Good beers but beware the specials: the Tuesday night $2.75 on all pints is only till 11pm. Food is nothing to write home about. Still, a nice, neighborhood pub with a good selection. Pros: good selection Cons: so-so food, specials not all night more

Something for everyone! 3/3/2006

I'm not really a beer drinker anymore, so was a little worried about hanging out with friends here. Luckily one of them pointed me in the direction of the ALE PEAR CIDER! That stuff is fantastic! They have a few different hard ciders, and a chocolate beer, a fruity beer, and several very light, crisp beers among their selection of heavy, dark beers. I was definitely impressed with the selection! more

The snacks aren't free 3/10/2005

For some reason, they charge for bar snacks here. Oh, and it gets REALLY smokey. But, the beer is good and you get to mingle with an interesting group of people, so it's worth a try. more

What a great place to have a Beer! 3/6/2005

This place is just about the best place to grab a beer. They have more beer taps on the bar back then many places have in total. Whent he weather is nice be sure to try to get a parking spot in the main parking lot and bring some yard chairs. It's like a big tailgate party! Go there a few times and the wait staff will treat you right. Pros: Beer selection, Outside Drinking, Location Cons: Smoking, Rain more

The Draught House is one of our favorite Austin places to frequent. When the weather is nice, there is no better place to unload your camping chair, enjoy the view, converse with friends, and savor a pint! The free pizza on Wednesdays and the free brat on Saturdays is just another reason to visit this very unique "pub"!! Pros: Great outdoors, Inexpensive, Relaxed Cons: Smokey inside, Crowded sometimes more

very austin-y 10/26/2002

this is a great place to experience what it's like to live in austin. very laid back atmosphere-- most spend there time in the parking lot enjoying the good weather. great nightly specials, and the homebrews are really excellent. try mondays for $2.75 guinness or murphy's, or thursdays for $2.25 huge house beers. awesome place... Pros: great specials, outdoors, laid back Cons: parking sucks, pizza tastes frozen more

Brats on Saturday! 10/15/2002

Check out their website for happy hour specials - the pizza on Wed. is great and Sat. is the best - free brats! Great atmosphere b/c of the unique mix of people - couples, bikers, college kids, etc. When the weather is nice, everyone goes outside and sits in the parking lot. Pros: crowd, happy hour, beer selection Cons: parking sometimes, smoky more

Editorial
  • In Short
With white plaster walls, exposed wooden beams and thick oak tables and chairs, the Draught House feels like a cross between a Bavarian hoffbrauhaus and a Tudor-era British inn. Mounted coats of arms, plates and steins add to the effect. The loyal crowd is a laid-back, convivial set of solid-citizen types, mostly in their late 20s and 30s. There's no hard liquor, but there are 50 beers available on draft, including several homebrews.
