When I go out to eat, I expect to pay a lot for my meal. I also expect to get a lot of food for that money. I'm a bit of a foodie and only want the best. Well, this place did deli...

As a South Indian, I was initially thrilled to come across this place because there are so few South Indian restaurants in this country. However, after waiting over 2 hours for a ...

Authentic food wrapped in Mission hipness 1/20/2006

We brought a friend who is from Bombay here, and he said the food was 'excellent'. I have had my fair share of dosas and idli in India myself and had to say the quality and presentation were out of this world. I'm used to eating Indian in more 'down home' settings, ie metal trays in very boring settings. Dosa gets it right for the Mission hipsters - the lighting and decor is right on. Also the prices are decent - I think my dosa was $7. Will go again and recommend to friends Pros: Great food, Price Cons: Ditzy waitress, Staff seemed new more

Delicious and succulent 1/20/2006

I went to DOSA last night on the recommendation of a friend who raved about it. I rarely venture into the Mission but I'll be returning to eat here again. The onion pakora was a good first course to stave off our hunger. The dosa was so good I ate the whole thing with my fingers, the sambar (soup) was very rich (unusual for a vegetariuan dish) and my friend's lamb, which upon initially seeing the portion size, he said wouldn't be able to finish. I tried it and it was perfect. He ate the whole thing and polished off every grain of rice that accompanied it. All 4 of us at the table finished and smiled at each other acknowledging the meal was great - almost like a Sunday family dinner feast! more

It's great to have a south indian restaurant in the city with a great ambiance and great prices. The masala dosas were great and so was the lamb curry. Pros: ambiance, food, prices more

Good Food, Incredibly Lousy Service 1/14/2006

Though other patrons were served dishes in a timely manner, we slowly starved at the bar. Nary a waitperson or bartender bothered to check on whether we wanted another drink or more lentil wafers. Twenty minutes later, our appetizers arrived. We sat for another thirty minutes waiting for our main course. Finally, a bartender approached us and asked if we wanted anything else, to which we replied that we would like the food we ordered, and asked if we could have some lentil wafers while we waited. He said that we would have to pay for another basket if we wanted more. After forgetting our food order, I think you could comp us a basket of lentil wafers! Suffice it to say, though the food (when it finally arrived) was good, we will neither return to Dosa, nor recommend this restaurant to any of our friends. Pros: Good food Cons: Poor service more

The food is amazing and like nothing you have ever had, unless you are from South India. Service is amazing and friendly. more

Indian Food - great setting 1/11/2006

The paneer dosa - a must try. My family loved the Chennai chicken - crispy and tender with the right amount of spices and flavor. Discovered it on our trip to San Fransico. Thanks guys for the great experience of having South Indian food in a chic setting, good choice of music and waitresses who made great recommendations. Will definately visit it on our next trip to SF. Pros: no spice odor, great wine list, parking deck nearby more

Hot Hot Hot! This Dosa is way cool... 1/11/2006

For this white boy from upstate NY nothing could be further from my experience than authentic south Indian cuisine, however that's one of the reasons I moved to San Francisco. My friends invited us out to Dosa for shot of cultural exploration and the whole affair was the perfect blend of cool drinks, spicy food and gorgeous atmosphere. try the soju cocktails, I love the Chai Russian! Pros: New taste sensation, Great staff, Beautiful Atmosphere more

Surprisingly Magnificent 1/10/2006

Being of Caucasian decent, I have been called ""Meat & Potatoes"" in the past. Generally my favorite foods are steaks, pasta, pizza, etc... I was surprised at how magnificent the food was at Dosa. An amazing range of tastes and dishes that was delightful for a person who doesn't venture outside of his comfort zone very much. The lamb curry and the numerous types of chutney were my favorites. While dining we met both the owners and they were delightful people (as well as the rest of their staff). Great experience, Try it!! Pros: Parking, Hip, Excellent Food more

Finally, a place I can call my own! 1/3/2006

Yes!!!! Having grown up as an American in New York City in a family of South Indian immigrants Ive finally found a place I can call my own. The food is about as close as it gets to the dishes Ive had at home and on my visits to South India. And the hip atmosphere and decor resonated with my sensibilities as a first-generation American. The dosas (their signature dish) and the sambar, which is an essential accompaniment, were definitely one the best Ive ever hadeither here or in India. One of our friends had the Tamil lamb curry, which they said was outstanding. My personal non-veg favorite was the pepper chicken which had a complex blend of spices including crushed bits of peppercorn, the sweetness from the caramelized onions with perfectly-seasoned-fall-of-the-bone chicken. Heres a place Ill definitely go back to over and over again with my Indianand American friends. Pros: Authentic Food, Neighborhood feel, Great Service more

Delicious South Indian Cusine - very unique 12/18/2005

Loved the food. I'd never had south Indian cusine or dosa's for that matter. I can't remember the names of the dishes, but my favorite was the lamb curry, dosa's with the chick peas, dosa's with the cheese, and the sampler dosas. The only problem is the tables are too small for the large plates and bowls. They should stagger the dishes out so there is room to be able to eat. We felt rushed to finish a dish to make room. The portions are great for 4 people to share. Pros: food, service, quantity Cons: small tables, very loud more

AWESOME! 12/17/2005

My friends and I had the best time! we didn't make reservations but the receptionist was extremely helpful and the food was amazing and the price was reasonable. Must try the Rasmalai and all of the dosas... yummy! Pros: Delicious Food, Friendly Staff, Reasonable Price Cons: Not spicy enough more

FINALLY 12/13/2005

For someone who loves dosas, I've either waited an eternity or didn't know where to look, but at last, a South Indian restaurant. As a reputed ""restaurant town,"" this city didn't have much to offer to a New Yorker, but as it seems, is making baby steps. Best service I've ever experienced west of Chicago. We waited 50 minutes but got free drinks for it. By the time we sat down, the food came like lightning, and our waitress was as hospitable as our hosts and the bartender. The food is on the spicy side, be forewarned if you have a sensitive palette. But oh so good. Pros: Service, Cheap paid parking, Great value Cons: Long wait, Crowded/Loud more

when good potatoes die, they go to heaven 12/9/2005

this newcomer is one to watch. as a huge potato fan, i am so impressed. i've never seen my favorite starch served up so deliciously with an incredible blend of mystery spices. also, we were afraid we'd be rushed through our meal as at most restaurants, but they let us sit for hours and hours. we practically moved in! we didn't have room for dessert thanks to the dosas (like a quesadilla stuffed with potatoes), but the wonderfully sweet and sticky rieslings took care of that need. and they were super well matched with the cuisine. we'll be back! Pros: potatoes, amazing breads, flavorful starches more

Really good (authentic) South Indian Food 12/8/2005

we ordered, methu vada, masala dosa, paneer dosa, and scrambled egg dosa, and to my surprise, besides my usual favorite masala dosa, both egg and paneer dosa were tasty as well. we also ended up ordereing bottle of sparkling wine from new zealand, which went excellent with the food. I would recommend sparkling anyday over the reds for dosa/uttapam/vada dishes. But go adventerous with your palatte. Also the only desert on the menu ras-malai (tender cottage cheese patties served in fragrant cream sauce flavored with cardamom etc, is excellent. Our wait staff courteous, prompt and made our visit very comfortble and fun. I'm definately going there again. Pros: good food, good ambiance, great wine list Cons: price more
