I decided to write this review after seeing Caribbean restaurants that I felt posed as "authentic" get high recommendations without fully deserving it. For anyone of Caribbean descent, anyone from New York City, or those that just enjoy good food, Doctor's Cove is for you!
I first came to Durham to go to college. During the time there, I struggled to find food that was close to the food my mom served. After Trinibago closed I started travelling to other Caribbean restaurants assuming that I would find the same thing. Wrong! For some reason people kept on suggesting Jamaica Jamaica. To me the food did not taste authentic at all! I guess that's my fault for asking North Carolinians that don't know better. Other places were worse for other reasons. I was ready to give up until I found Doctor's Cove.
The atmosphere is very relaxed- food is served in to-go containers, just like all Jamaican restaurants I grew up with in New York. Don't let that fool you- there is definitely lots of space to sit down, and if you are lucky you may get pulled into a game of dominoes. The food is incredibly tasty, fresh, & the servings are huge for the price! My favorites are the curry goat & the oxtail stew, even though I've tried averything on the menu & it's all good. If you go (and you're not in a huge hurry), get a roti- it's the only place in the Triangle area that offers this incredible dish. This place has a lot of repeat customers and most of them are Caribbean! I don't know about you, but if people choose to come to a restaurant when they can make the same food at home, it is a sign that the food is good!
On Saturdays specialties such as Ackee and Saltfish and dumplings are served. Call before ordering a fish dish, as it is made to order, but it is definitely worth the wait. Want a special request? Talk to the cook, and he may be able to work with you.
All in all, Doctor's Cove is definitely a diamond in the rough. Please come, & allow this gem to shine!!!
Pros: hidden gem, tasty food, friendly atmosphere, very inexpensive
Cons: parking sometimes tricky when busy
