Best

this place makes down home southern style BBQ. They have cornbread, soups, and so much more. The place is always bustling with people. You won't be disappointed.

Worst

When I think of BBQ, I think of fresh meat marinading in fantastic sauces, cooking into the meat. That is not Dixie Bones :( The meat may be fresh but it comes dry and bland. G...

Good, not great food 1/22/2012

A group of us ate at this restaurant for dinner recently. The wait for a table on a Saturday night was, as expected, a bit long, but I was surprised that once we were seated, we gave our order and received our food extremely fast (as much of the food was probably prepared many hours in advance). I was in the mood for ribs, and the ribs here appeased my appetite but were not anywhere near the best. The sides of baked beans were sour, the cornbread could have had more corn in it, and the muddy potatoes could have been warmer. Overall, the taste of the food was OK/acceptable. The service was good. We were happy to try out a restaurant that was new to us, but we would not make an effort to return. more

Umm! Umm! Good 10/22/2010

Out of all the BBQ restaurants in the area this one is at the top of the list. The price is right for someone who is on a budget and the food is awesome. One of my favorites is the chopped chicken. The potato salad is the best made from scratch. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking to eat in a family style environment and want great food to eat. more

Decent southern food 5/31/2010

Overall, Dixie Bones is a solid choice for BBQ made in the tradition of one of the stalwart states for the cuisine. If you live in Woodbridge, you should try this place immediately (unless you have an aversion to eating meat). If you live in DC, it's certainly worth the drive to try something that best resembles an actual meal from the Deep South. Pros: eh its good enough Cons: meh more

BBQ Best 1/24/2010

I decided to give it a try and stopped in for a order to go. I had the BBQ, cole slaw and baked beans. I love both beans and BBQ and this was one the the best I have every had. I will certainly be returning again and again. more

ehhh...not really bbq if you ask me 3/12/2009

When I think of BBQ, I think of fresh meat marinading in fantastic sauces, cooking into the meat. That is not Dixie Bones :( The meat may be fresh but it comes dry and bland. Granted there are a few choices of sauce at each table that you can put on your meat but its just not what I expect from BBQ. The sauce is ON the meat, not cooked into the meat so its still kind of dry. Not for me... more

Editorial review from The Washington Post 4/25/2007

This barbecue restaurant may be the best known eating place in Prince William County. Just off Route 1 on Occoquan Road, Dixie Bones serves Birmingham-style barbecue, which isn't the same as you would find in North Carolina or Kansas City. Basically, the sauce is tomato based and has a slightly sweet component. But it's the meat that makes the barbecue, and Dixie Bones smokes its pork butts (really the shoulder), beef brisket, ribs and chicken over hickory wood in a real barbecue pit. The restaurant no longer sports its original orange decor, having switched instead to a dark green. Pig statues still decorate the window sills, and law enforcement patches cover almost every vertical space. Servers have gone high-tech, placing orders on PDAs and wearing small machines around their waists that can print out your receipt on the spot. The same PDAs are capable of handling credit card transactions. I prefer to get the barbecue to take home. The potato salad and coleslaw are down home good, and don't forget a slice of pie or a fried apple pie (well, it's really a baked apple turnover, but the concept is similar!). Dixie Bones is experienced in handling takeout orders and has special packing materials to ensure the food arrives in great condition. --Nancy Lewis, The Guide, April 26, 2007 more
