The Detroit Zoo, located between Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, is a gem of a zoo. From summer concerts on Wednesday evenings to its stunning polar bear exhibit, this park is a g...

Worst

I've gone to many zoos throughout the country as I've got three young children. Some we like, some are okay, and some (like Detroit) aren't worth the money paid. To start with...

Nice place to pass the day 10/19/2005

The Arctic Ring of Life was probably the only major interesting exhibit that we saw at the zoo. Everything else was either off display or not that interesting. Especially for the price you pay to get in, you also have to pay for parking, and not to mention how pricey the food is inside the zoo. I think it is nice to go there once in a great while, and there is ample close by in the lot. The zoo is clean and well kept, but I would have to say, take a trip to the Toledo Zoo and you may find it more interesting. more

Great place to spend a day! 10/3/2005

This is one of those places that if your in Detroit for a day you have to go and visit. Its fun for all ages and the day is a great experience. They have some animals and exhibits that you wont even find any other place in the country! Worth every penny. more

Great Zoo 9/9/2005

This is a great zoo with tons of exhibits. They've recently added a dinosaur exhibit as well as a penguinarium. Well marked paths and even a train make getting around a breeze. Tons of shops to buy food and souveniers. Lots of parking and animals for a day of fun. Great for kids and adults. Stop in a give them a visit. more

Lots of fun in a family friendly setting 9/6/2005

The Detroit Zoo is a fun (and educational) outing for anyone of any age. I've been here many times in my life, either with my family, as a field trip, or as an "au pair" assistant. The zoo is constantly updating itself, and though the maintenance must be difficult, it is well done. The price of admission isn't bad, but the costs for food is a little steep. more

GREAT ZOO! 9/5/2005

This is a great zoo! They have plenty of animals, and you can even go in the winter if you want. It is very well kept, very clean, not too expensive as far as admission goes, and they offer food and refreshments too! They also have a park to eat in if you bring your own food. You can see SO much there! They usually have something special too going on. GREAT ZOO! I would highly recommend taking the whole family there! more

The Polar Bear exhibit was the best 9/4/2005

My favorites were the Polar bear exhibit which was awesome you walk threw a glass tube and watch the bears swim around you and over you it is so cool. The penguin house was great also they are so close as you watch them swim and walk around. I was disappointed they had to get rid of the elephants but the rest of the zoo is great we had a wonderful time. They have a train that takes you around the zoo. There are concession stands to buy your lunch or you can bring your own and eat it there. I have been to other zoos where the animals are so far away you can barely see them this is not the case with the Detroit zoo it was great. Adults and children will love it. Make sure to call for hours they are only open one day later until 8pm more

Big name - not a lot of bang 9/4/2005

This zoo is very well known and advertised. This is not a favorite of mine. A lot of the exhibits are empty. I think in the middle of summer - the high season - more than one gift shop should be open. Also the concessions stands are closed all over the park. The park is very big and the concessions are placed throughout which would be perfect if they were open. The animals are great of course. But we go to the zoo quite often and have been here at different times throughout the year and have yet to see the train running. It is not as clean as I would like. We saw a rat at the one large concession that was open - which really put sick sort of feeling on the whole day. A bit of a disappointment. more

Detroit Zoo 8/31/2005

Nice Zoo. It is a great place to take the entire family all year round. To me it seems that the animals are more awake and moving around in the mornings. You can enjoy the indoor exhibits in the winter. Fun for the entire family. Getting a membership is a good way to go. It seems to pay for itself if you go more then twice a year. more

A Fun Day At The Zoo 8/30/2005

The Detroit Zoological Park is a very great zoo. During the summer we like to visit atleast once a month. I like seeing the animals in the open exhibits. I can't get enough of watching the new baby polar bear. They also do fun days at the zoo for holidays. Bring your kids to the Boo Zoo for trick or treating with the animals. more

Best Zoo Around 8/23/2005

I recently took my family to this zoo for a Saturday afternoon and it is really a wonderful location that has only gotten better over time. They have a wide selection of animals, gifts, etc. They also feature sprinkle systems that spray water so kids and adults can cool off on those 90 degree days. The only problem was the total lack of parking and there was construction on a few of the attractions other than that it was a perfect day. more

I love love love the Detroit Zoo and go as often as I can during the warm months. They butterfly garden is BEAUTIFUL and so relaxing and a wonderful addition. There are so many different tundras and types of animals to see, and always enough people where it fuels your excitement. A MUST-SEE!! more

Excellent Family Day Out 8/9/2005

The Detroit Zoo is one of the best zoos in the country. In addition to the numerous animal exhibits they offer beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens and a gorgeous fountain. Be sure to check out the new Arctic exhibit- you can view the polar bears and seals swimming through a unique underwater observatory. The penguin exhibit is also one of the best I've seen. Although the building is a little outdated, you get a bird's eye view of the penguins remarkable speed as they swim right past you. If you have a family and will be visiting the zoo more than once you will save money by purchasing the zoo membership for one year. You will receive free membership and parking for the entire year. more

Educational and Fun 7/28/2005

The Detroit Zoo provides a great experience for both children and adults. The grounds are spread out with large exhibits featuring a variety of animals. The polar bear and seal exhibit is outstanding. They offer several unique animal houses, most notably the butterfly house where you can watch beautiful, unique buitterflies from all around the world in a peaceful enviroment. Expect to walk a lot, although they do offer a one-way train the the back or front of the Zoo for a small fee. The membership is a great bargain if you plan to attend more than once or twice a year. more

Nice, clean zoo 7/27/2005

Offers many animals, and the train rides are always a plus. I do wish, however, that the train rides were free for members. We have a family membership that is a LIFE SAVER in terms of money. It costs $10 per adult, $5 to park the car, and $7 per child. Buy the family membership for $75! It pays for itself in one trip, at least for us (5 people in family). You also get 50% off other zoos throughout the country, and a discount in the store. more

Great Zoo 7/26/2005

This is a wonderful zoo to take children too! We try to visit atleast once a year. The new polar bear exibit where you actually go under a tunnel and see them swimming is so neat! It is an older zoo, but worth a trip too! more

Great zoo! 7/25/2005

This zoo is a great way to spend time with the family. The membership pays for itself in a few visits and I love taking the kids in the fall when it's much quieter. It's great exercise, too! This is one zoo where you do not feel sorry for the animals. They live in large well-kept habitats unlike some other zoos. The entire zoo is deliberately planned to look very natural. My favorite attraction is the Arctic Ring of Life with the seals and polar bears. Be sure to stop by and visit the baby polar bear! The zoo train is a great ride and worth the couple bucks. more

Great zoo! 7/8/2005

We love the Detroit Zoo! Our favorite exhibit is the butterfly garden. It's so cool to be able to be right with the butterflies. We also love the polar bear exhibit, but it's not often we get to see them through the glass tunnel. My daughter loves the zoo so much, she calls it HER zoo!!! more

Great for All Ages 7/4/2005

I love the Detroit Zoo. It is great for all ages. They are continually adding new things. They have a train that takes you around the zoo. I love the penguin house. I felt bad when they had to get rid of the elephants though. They said our weather was to hard on them. They have places you can buy food and souvenirs or you can bring your own picnic to eat there. more

zoo 6/29/2005

Nice zoo, but plants are often overgrown giving the zoo a messy appearance. Very fee staff available for questions. You have to walk very far to get to the best animals. more

Nice Zoo 6/11/2005

Our local zoo offers special events such as halloween at the zoo (Zoo boo) and christmas lights at christmas. Nice for a change. There are nicer zoos out there but this is the closest one we have. Definately get the year pass - it is well worth it and pays for itself, even if you just go a few times. more
