This is such a fun place to go to. They are a playhouse, but they also serve snacks and dinner. You sit and watch the play at a table. The plays are comical and fun to watch. ...

Best Steak for the Money 5/8/2003

Not a lot of variety on the menu, but the steaks have always been excellent and the price absolutely can't be beat. Their steaks do seem to cook slightly to the 'well' side. Even my wife, who likes her steaks medium-well and can't stand pink meat thought she would get medium next time. Seating is in the open, like at a 'Western Style' Cafe. Tables are actually picnic benches covered by red and white checkered table cloths. Benches are without back support. The wait can be very long on weekends. I recommend reservations if you have a large group. Your family will be happy here. I often take 8 or 10 people at a time to this place. While you are there, make plans to go see their Playhouse 'farce' that they run next door, especially on weekends. Buy tickets well in advance if you want good seats. Pros: Good Food, Fun atmosphere, Very Cheap for Steak Cons: Not a lot of variety, 'Western' seating, Often crowded more

Great Family Fun!!!!!! 2/3/2003

Finally, great comedy where you don't have to cover the kid's ears. Every time I go, I come away with a side ache from laughing so hard. Pros: Family oriented, Funny, Affordable more

Good stuff! 1/30/2003

This is a great place for steak! I had the 12 oz. ribeye and my date had the half-rack of BBQ ribs. My ribeye was tender and cooked to perfection and had a good char-broiled flavor. The ribs were tender and had generous amounts of meat on them. Both entrees were served with baked beans and veggies that were cooked just right. They weren't too crisp and weren't too soggy. Our server was knowledgable, cheerful and prompt. The best part was the prices. A similar steak at other steak places would have cost $14-$16 but at Desert Start it was only $11.99. I highly recommed this place to all! Enjoy! Oh, you sit at picnic tables with a red checkered tablecloth so be prepared for that. Pros: excellent prices, hearty portions, great tasting food more

I can't wait for the new show to start! Pros: silly, delicious food, people were great Cons: not enough space, the tables were small more

We didn't expect much from this homey-looking little place, but the food was amazingly good. The steaks were as good as any we've had at the higher-toned eateries around town--or better. And the prices are great. Pros: Excellent steaks, Fun atmosphere, Great prices more

Never Laughed So Hard 9/27/2002

I have attended the playhouse twice and left feeling so much better. I laughed all evening. All ages were entertained. I can't get those crazy characters out of my mind. It makes me want to join them in a play acting group. This is tops in corny entertainment. Pros: affordable, good variety, suits all ages Cons: fills up fast more

""Until we meet again..."" 9/5/2002

I have had season tickets for the past three or four years and continue to love each performance. The director is the best, Scott Holman. The wait staff is friendly and you never have to worry about the content of the show. Over all, Desert Star Playhouse is a great, wholesome evening out (and the jokes/punch lines are very comical). We even signed up three new couples for season tickets. :) Pros: Good Parking, Friendly, Fun Cons: Crowded, Small Tables, Bad Pizza more

Simply Fun 9/3/2002

We go there as a family 2-3 times a year and are never disappointed. Although our first experience was by far the best we love our return visits. It's a great family experience! Pros: fun, relaxing, good value Cons: crowded more

  • The Scene
Decorating the barn-like dining room are old-time Western photos, patriotic bunting and a mural featuring a covered wagon. Meals are served at picnic tables covered with red-and-white checkered tablecloths, while country-western music plays in the background. It's the kind of place where servers call you "hon" and conversation may be interrupted by raucous birthday celebrations.

    The Food
From a 6-oz tenderloin to a 2-lb porterhouse, grilled steaks dominate the menu. Fork-tender barbecue--chicken, pork ribs, smoked sausage--comes with extra sauce for dipping and a warm washcloth to wipe your sticky fingers. Fresh sourdough bread, a cup of chunky homemade soup or a mixed green salad (try the surprisingly spicy chipotle ranch dressing), and cumin-accented ranch beans accompany each entree. Baked potatoes are extra and fries are not available. Dessert choices are limited to apple and razzleberry cobblers or a brownie sundae, served warm with vanilla bean ice cream.
