Boy, they should change their mantra to mind strong, spirit strong, WALLET strong. The only spirit that flows through this studio is the all mighty dollar. There may be positive reviews but this is because they bribe you with deals and discounts for positive advertisments. What you don't get to hear about is the truth. Tournaments are run short and overpriced. You definitely don't get what you pay for. It's a shame that most of the instructors are good and sincere but the office staff is only sincere about getting their payments. The plastic smiles dropped once my child decided to take a break for other activities. You would think in these current economic times that one would try to keep customers and not push them away. Shame, Shame!!! more

We love Dawn Barnes!! 6/20/2010

My Son started taking Karate over a year ago at Dawn Barnes and we can not say enough about it. The staff is fantastic, and very accommodating. My son loves karate and can not wait to go to class. He has learned to have more patience, self discipline, strength, respect and concentration. We plan for him to go all the way, and he can not wait to be able to join the Black Belt Club :O) Mom of Brandon J. 5 years old. Pros: Teaches children patience and self discipline more

Totally Awesome! 6/15/2010

My son has been coming here for about a year now and it went by so fast. He loves everything about his classes and the more advanced he becomes the more motivated he is to do better. All the instructos are great and each one brings something different to their classes. Everyone is really nice and helpful with anything the students or parents need. I didn't think I would love the place as much or that my son would enjoy karate as much as he does. I recommend this place for anyone looking for an extracuricular activity for their children it will be worth every penny!! more

Best kids karate around 6/7/2010

When my son started karate, I had no idea how great it would be! I am so happy that we found Dawn Barnes Karate Kids. My son loves it here. He has only been here slightly over 2 years and now he is excited to join the Black Belt club. He strives to work hard and compete and advance to every next level. Pros: wonderful senseis, great learning environment more

Great Dojo! 5/17/2010

We have been attending this dojo over over two years now and my son had progressed tremendously with karate. All the senseis (especially Sensei Trevor and Sensei Brandon) make the classes fun while teaching kids detailed techniques. They manage to keep the kids focus without losing sight to their lessons. The class is a great mixture of techniques, circuits, and games (my son loves the games!) to keep the kids interested. more

The BEST karate dojo! 5/6/2010

Dawn Barnes in Calabasas is the best! Our son is 7 years old and this will be his 4th year! And our daughter is 8 years old and decided to join this year to learn some karate moves too! They both love the classes. Our senseis are awesome! They are very energetic and bring focus and discipline to every class. The children get a great workout and learn self defense moves. They have many programs to suit children from 2-17 years! If you're looking for a karate dojo, Dawn Barnes is the best! And they have many locations to choose from! Pros: Teaches children respect and focus more

We absolutely love Dawn Barnes Karate Kids. Having recently moved to Calabasas, California, we feel very fortunate to have found this Karate school. Our son who is 11 yrs. old loves, loves, loves going to class and that just says it all:) Pros: Positive environment, Excellent Staff!!!!! more

Amazing Character Builder 11/8/2008

This school is fantastic! My child has been attending for 3 years now, and the transformation he has gone through is amazing. Nothing like his other sports. His behavior is better in school, and the respect he shows us at home certainly makes life so much easier for us. Highly recommend!! more

  • In 1985, Dawn enrolled herself and her 2 sons in karate classes--and loved it! She earned her Black Belt in 1988 and began teaching kids' classes in after-school programs. Parents were drawn to Dawn's age-appropriate curriculum and "love-based" teaching method, which centered on good manners, focus, and kid-friendly self-defense.

    In 1995, Dawn opened her first school. In 2001, by popular demand, she began expanding to new locations. Her success inspiring children led to being asked to mentor other kids teachers around the world. Dawn is also the author of Scholastic's book series, The Black Belt Club. In 2006, Dawn was inducted into Black Belt Magazine's Hall of Fame for her contributions to the martial arts.

    In 2010, after more than 25 years of teaching children, Dawn founded Gozen Karate, the world's first "child-style" of martial arts. She currently owns 7 schools around LA: Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sherman Oaks, Encino, and Woodland Hills.
